1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would you rather commission a faceup, or do it yourself?

Mar 24, 2013

    1. I have done both! And they're rewarding in different ways. One thing though, learning to do faceups myself has made me appreciate other people's work all the more.

    2. do it myself for sure, i want my dolls to look like my style, and the main point is i dont wanna wait any longer to seeing my dolls haha

    3. I would want to do the faceup myself! But the doll head I bought was secondhand and needs work on the eye wells. And being new to the hobby, I have no idea on how to do that and wish for the eye wells to be fixed before i get a face up.

    4. So far i've done all my own face ups since for me its part of the fun of having the doll and a big part of the hobby. in fact one of the first things i do when i get a new doll in is strip them clean them and then get them sealed and ready for a new face ^-^
However i did buy a doll for a friend for her birthday second hand that came with a company face up and i'm not going to touch that lol ^^ (for one thing i have greatly improved but still think i would be lying were i to say i could do better then the company face up)
so i guess it depends i cant really see myself sending a doll out for a face up unless
A i really fell in love with a particular face up artist work and i just really wanted to have something that was their work
      B. I bought the doll as a gift and didn't feel my own talents were up to the job for that particular friend.

    5. Despite not being able to draw or paint to save my life, I decided to do my own. :3nodding: I was terrified at first--and, yep, I've done some that ended up wiped almost right away--but it was easier and more fun than I thought it would be. It's also such a good way to bond with the doll, at least for me. Their stories and personalities become much clearer to me as I work on them. I enjoy seeing how I improve with each new faceup, too. It makes me feel braver about trying other creative things with my crew.

To be honest, if I only had wanted one doll and never intended to buy any others, I probably would have commissioned a faceup instead. I'm sure I spent more buying my supplies to do the faceup myself than I would have if I had commissioned it. It only becomes cost effective when you do multiple faceups.

    6. Even though there are many artists who I like; I prefer to do the face up myself even if I have a hard time with the eyebrows.

    7. Oh lord. My faceup skills are awful. I have NO problem dropping $100 for a professional faceup. People would pay me to stay away from their dolls.

    8. I'd be terrified to do my own faceup, but I think after doing lots of drawings and attempts on cheaper dolls (like Monster High Dolls) I might be comfortable doing a faceup on my own.

    9. I prefer to paint my own. I don't think of myself as a particularly good artist, but I'm not sure that I could explain in great enough detail (without totally infuriating some faceup artist) how I wanted the doll to look.

I would probably end up being frustrated or unhappy with some part of a commissioned faceup. At least when I do it myself it looks how I want it (even if the appearance isn't as professional as I would like)!

    10. I actually prefer letting artists do whatever with my dolls/letting them have free rein over the faceup. I'm not particularly good at faceups myself.

    11. Even though I lack the skills and b*tch and moan about the process, for some reason I still insist on painting all my dolls myself.
Mostly because finding an artist I like that is open for commission at the time I need is is too much trouble and I don't like losing half of my doll for anywhere between two weeks to 3 months :/
Also since I can't sew or do proper photoshoots either, painting them give me that warm feeling of (mediocre) accomplishment and bonding time with the resin kids :P

    12. (Although I don't have one yet) I would definitely get a commission rather than do it myself for more than one reason. I have shaky hands that mess up my own make up, and I already have respiratory issues so I don't need the risk of life-threatening toxic supplies just so I can mess up my doll's make up. (Not my talent)

(Edit: found out that non toxic supplies do exist...I may attempt face ups in the future)

    13. Never trusted anyone enough to paint the faces of my dolls. I mean, I can never be sure that I would like the face I pay for. That's why I try doing it myself. I'm still far away from perfection, but at least spending money on painting materials and redoing it as many times as I need to feels more convenient for me, rather then paying an artist who obviously cannot get my ideas right from my head.

    14. i tried doing a face up without the complete tools i am not that good yet so i rather have someone do it for me

    15. I would love to do it myself at some point! I had Reika's face up commissioned because it was too complicated for me to do as a noob.

    16. Since my sister is an artist and she is really good at faceups i would commision her to do faceups for me!

    17. I'd prefer to do the faceup myself. Maybe because I haven't tried it before so i'm still optimistic that I can do a good job :) Plus, even if it isn't professional, I think knowing that I've done the art and exactly how I want it will help me love my doll more. If I ever buy a secondhand doll with a perfect look though, I don't think I'd change the faceup there.

    18. Commissions. I can't do it!!

    19. I want to be a face-up artist and I tried...but I still need more practices, haha! I hope I can do it by myself one day.

    20. I like to commission people for the same reason I don't design my own tattoos, after sitting a while with a piece of my own art, all I can see is it's flaws. But someone else's art, that I like, I never stop liking it. I especially like getting other people to do faceups because I like to see how other people interpret my characters! I give them the basic run down on the characters physical features, black hair, yellow hooded eyes, etc... and then I describe the character to them personality wise and I looooove to see what they come back with from those descriptions! It's always such a pleasing surprise!
