1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would you rather commission a faceup, or do it yourself?

Mar 24, 2013

    1. I’d rather do my dolls faceup’s myself. I’m too worried about things going wrong to send them out to a stranger. I may not be very good at faceups but doing my dolls faceups myself also gives me the chance to practice and improve my abilities. It also allows me to try exactly what I want and the only loss if it doesn’t work out is some of my time. Additionally I just enjoy doing faceups.

    2. Hmmm hard to say. I think my top preference is to buy a secondhand doll who already has a faceup that captures my character ;)

I don't particularly enjoy doing faceups myself because the spraying part is anxiety inducing and I don't have a nice outdoor area to spray in. I also feel like my own faceups are so far from professional.

On the flip side, I find I can capture my own vision so much better than when I commission artists - I think it's hard to put into words what I want exactly, so I've never been 100% happy with a commissioned faceup.

    3. If I was an artistically inclined person I would love to do my face ups myself to save myself some money on having to always pay for the artist face up or commission someone to do a face up for me. I see that the start up costs are not bad but I just can’t do intricate detailing to save my life.

    4. i have 4 heads that need face ups at the moment. I had the plan at the beginning, to do them all my self. But after seen some of the amazing face up artist I may send one away ( but the price is a lot), and the fear of losing it og getting damaged to or from the artist is scary, it's not like I can get a new head .... so I think I will do them my self ( im just waiting for better weather and maybe buy a practice head In the mean time).

    5. After trying to do a faceup on a free head and realizing how awful it looks, I'd rather commission others to do my dorrie's faceups. :sweat

    6. I did my first doll's faceup myself! While very very very flawed, I actually want to keep practicing so that I can execute my vision with more technical skills on a doll. I want to keep trying. Dolls feel more personal and fulfilling if they were done by me IMO.

    7. I want to be 100% happy with my dolls so I personally commission others. I know that if I did it myself I’d never be satisfied and it would take forever for me get it done in the first place.

    8. My problem is the fear of commissions; maybe the heads gets lost, damaged, stolen or you don't even end up liking the result at the end. That's why I always do my own faceups, maybe they don't look as pretty as a professional one but I bond with my doll while doing them (and I enjoy it a lot too).

    9. For now I’m still in the ‘Do it myself’ camp even if I always mess up something and never get eyebrows and eyelashes looking nice. As frustrating as it sometimes is the process is always enlightening in a way as it helps you find the doll’s personality and character which is quite often, for me anyway, not what I thought it was going to be.
As I’m getting older though my close up eyesight has taken a dive and my patience has packed it’s bags and left leading to a lot of frustration with faceups so commissioning may well be in the future for me.

    10. I would definitely opt for a face-up commission - the first time I tried doing a face up of Caius Levi, let's just say that it did not end well. *_*

    11. My current attitude is that I absolutely want to do it myself and the only acceptable alternative is the company faceup (IF, and only if, I like it exactly as is and my character doesn't require something more specific), but we'll see if my tune changes when I'm finally brave enough to actually use all the faceup supplies I bought :XD: If my results are abominable and I show no signs of improving anytime soon, then I might get desperate enough to seek outside help, but I'm definitely on the fence about that for many reasons.

I don't think I'll send off anything that's "out of print" no matter how bad I am at faceups, because if the mail service loses it or something goes awry on the artist's end, I won't be able to replace it. And even though I'm an artist myself, I'm wary of other artists, because I've had a few too many negative experiences where they'll take your money and produce nothing for extended periods of time (or...ever) while somehow finding time to work on everything but your commission.

Of course, I feel obligated to say that I know most aren't like that, but with my abysmal luck and lack of experience within this community, I would manage to choose exactly the wrong artist and that's what would happen. I'd rather avoid the stress altogether, unless we're talking about an artist whose work is so spectacularly perfect for the job I have in mind that I can't imagine anything else for my doll.

    12. I would commission a face-up cause I can not do face-ups, and I do not think it would look good.
