Would you sell a rare/limited/discontinued doll?

Dec 11, 2015

    1. Let's say you find yourself in the position of owning a very rare doll, whether it's because it was a limited or the company is no longer around or whatever the scenario may be. If you weren't entirely sure if you 100% loved the sculpt-would you sell it? Or would knowing that the chance of possibly wanting it back someday and the slim chance of being able to find it be enough to convince you to keep it?

    2. Well, I would most likely keep the doll because the reason why I wouldn't bond well with a doll is because it didn't fit the character I intended for it. I could always change the character until it suits the doll. I've never sold a doll and I don't plan on doing so any time soon.

    3. Hmm hard question... I would probably keep it till I'm super sure I don't bond with the doll and miss it after it's rehomed.
BUT if there was a doll that I really really wanted and I would be sure that the rare doll would sell easily and with a good price then probably I could let the doll go and buy the new doll I've really wanted. ^^

    4. If the doll wasn't what I really wanted from it, I would absolutely sell it on and use those funds to buy a doll I would enjoy more. The way I see it, if I love that doll less than 100%, I should sell it to get one I do love 100%! I have had rare and limited dolls before, ending up not liking them or falling out of love with them, and I sold them to recoup the costs for dolls I would like more. In fact, almost all of my favorite dolls are standard edition dolls.

For me personally, I have never regretted selling a doll. But I have also never put any doll up for sale I wasn't 100% certain I didn't want anymore, so that is an easy situation. I know I would never want the doll back and wouldn't have to worry about how hard it would be to get them again. This of course, wouldn't work for people that aren't sure they would never want that doll again.

    5. I've bought and sold a number of limited and hard-to-find dolls. There are times when I find myself in need of extra funds (say, to take a sick cat to the vet or unexpected auto repairs), and selling a doll that's in high demand seems the quickest way to get them. Sure, I hate having to part with the dolls, but in the end they're just dolls. Having a working car and a healthy pet is more important, in my opinion.

    6. It would entirely depend on how I felt about the doll. If it were a doll that I held dear, probably not. If it was a sculpt that I was ambivalent about or no longer liked, I would absolutely sell it and buy a doll that I liked better. Tastes change, and it would give someone else a chance to enjoy a doll I no longer cared for.

    7. Sell it. If I'm not bonding to a doll, and it's not holding my interest, especially if I could sell it for a decent amount of money to get something I like better, there's no reason for it to keep taking up space in my house.

If I wasn't 100% sure I wanted to sell yet, I'd stick it in a box in my closet for a month. I'm a hands on owner, and if I can go a month without touching a doll, it's time for it to move on.

    8. I'm actually in the process of cleaning up a discontinued doll to sell. His size just doesn't work for me and I've never found the time nor the supplies to try and make him into something I feel I can keep.

I'd rather have him go to someone who'll enjoy him.

    9. If I don't like it I don't like it. I'm stubborn and rarely change my mind. I'd give it a fair amount of time for analysis and styling first though.

    10. I'd probably sell it. Although it might be pretty seldom I'd do that. I usually think it over before getting a new doll especially if it's a rare or limited one.

    11. It would depend on how much I liked the doll in the first place and if I'd get a good price for it. If money wasn't an urgent issue and I wouldn't sell it at a fair price, I wouldn't be so quick to sell.

    12. I already have and sometimes I miss her but to be honest I just didn't do anything with her and she didn't go with my other dolls. Now she is in a better home where she is being appreciated. I think I honestly got her because back then I was thinking "wow I can get a limited? awesome!" instead of thinking if I really loved or needed this girl at the moment, I have never even been big on limited things so I don't even know what made me think that way about a bjd.

    13. My best indicator that I need to sell a limited item is if I'm so scared of damaging it that I do nothing with it. There were some Sailor Moon anniversary dolls that I HAD TO HAVE but I was so worried about them getting messed up that I had them double boxed under my bed. I couldn't enjoy them, so I sold them to a collector that loved them.

I have a discontinued doll, and 2 event heads, and a limited doll, and I am completely okay with them being out in my room. I do worry about them getting damaged, which is why I am very careful if I take one with me somewhere, but I'm not so terrified of hurting them I keep them in their boxes.

I don't usually have OCs that I'm shelling in the doll, I usually base a character off the doll, so unless there's no hope of me coming up with something, I wouldn't sell it. I have worried that eventually my tastes will change and I'll be unhappy with dolls I have, and that might be a reason to sell. Unfortunately I have a real collector mentality, so it would be hard to part with a limited/discontinued doll! But it all comes down to how much I enjoy the doll when thinking about selling.

    14. I think that I would never sell a doll that I've bought, if I bought it then that means that I thought for a long time about it and I really really love it. So regardless of whether the doll is a readily available standard or a rare/discontinued/otherwise no longer available doll I do not think that I would sell it.
However, if I found myself in possession of such a doll (like if it was a free gift or something), I wasn't crazy about it and I knew that there was someone that really wanted it then I might sell it.

    15. The rarity or availability of doll never had any impact on whether I wanted to keep it, sell it or buy it.

If for example I won a doll I didn't like/indifferent about in a contest and I really didn't want it - I would sell it. If it was a gift from someone and it held sentimental value as being a gift and wasn't in the way; I'd keep it. If someone wanted to give me a doll because they didn't didn't know what to do with it, as in; "I found these dolls in an abandoned storage locker, I know you collect dolls, do you want it" type of thing...I would refuse the doll. Things that are free and have no value or purpose to me are just clutter - so I would pass. If on the other hand I saw some kind of potential in the doll; I would keep it.

    16. If I didn't care too much about it anymore, then definitely. Otherwise it would just sit in hiding and there'd be no point. I prefer limited/hard to find dolls, so I know that even if I sell one that I don't love anymore, I know that there will be more dolls in the future.

    17. I did have a rare bjd and sold it, because I was afraid to have something that rare and delicate. I don't exactly regret selling it, but I wish I would have given myself more time to think before I sold it. I probably would have talked myself into keeping it.

    18. Would... and have.

It doesn't matter how rare or unusual the doll is. If I don't like it, there's no point in keeping it. I'm just not willing to let an unwanted doll take up any of my limited cabinet space. 'Better just to sell it on to someone who'll enjoy it more.

    19. I pretty much agree with Chibi_Rat !! ALL my dolls were carefully considered before I bought them and if I did have to part with one it would definately not be a limited edition one.

    20. I would keep a super rare or limited sculpt until I knew for sure that I did not want it anymore. I take into consideration the extra time and finances it would take to re-obtain the sculpt, and that alone is enough for me to give it another chance. If I am comfortable letting it go and I know I do not want that doll or sculpt any longer, than it is time to put it up for sale.
