Would you sell most/all of your dolls for a good cause?

Oct 21, 2012

    1. Only if it was something I considered worth it and if I had nothing else I could sell ... Before the bjds went anywhere I'd sell my TV, computers, other toys and dolls i have that are not BJDs, shoes, clothes... seriously... anything else but not them : / Mainly because the things I would REALLY want to help with... I cant ... all the money in the world cant stop life threatening/changing diseases for instance...
Plus... most of them are limiteds xD so would be a nightmare to replace... plus wouldn't be the same anyway ....

    2. The good cause would have to be me. I've sold dolls to cover other large purchases that I wanted more than the dolls and help with some work on my car, but I wouldn't sell them off to donate to charity.

I think donating your time and energy to help is a much more beneficial and rewarding type of donation than money, and it's often the harder thing for charities to get.

    3. To be honest... no. I consider myself quite a moral person and I do give to charities and help out with worthy causes. But my dolls are for me, they help me and give me pleasure. What's more, my dolls are unique. Money and time can be spent, but not my dolls!

    4. By "cause" I'm assuming the OP means "Cause" - e.g. a charity or organization that helps a lot of people. (Selling a doll out of personal need doesn't really qualify as a Cause, IMO.)

I wouldn't sell one of my own dolls, but I could see doing something like a charity auction - buy a doll, make it up as a one-off fullset, then auction or raffle it off.

    5. Probably not, simply because the second hand market is really soft right now and dolls can linger unsold for a very long time. There are more efficient ways to earn money.

    6. If I could save a life or something like that, and my dolls were the ONLY option, then I probably could. BUT--I wouldn't be building a kennel or anything at my place (just wouldn't work and I'm not good at that sort of thing). AND I have lots of other stuff I could sell first...

I don't think anyone here is going to say that they would have to keep their dolls over helping someone they love out. But there are usually other options. And I knew that going in--dolls could be sold for some money if absolutely necessary.

    7. I really don't know. If i didn't have the time i had to think about it, while reading some of the replies i would've said no.
The two dolls i have is a very expensive therapy and only if it was a very important cause (for me at least) i'd do it. I'm sure i wouldn't even sell them if i were in desperate need of money, maybe some of their clothes, but never them.

So only in a very special case, like if my dog needed surgery and i couldn't get the money elsewhere or other life threatening.

    8. It would depend on the cause. If it was something I was very passionate about and thought that selling the dolls in order to help the proceeds to said cause, then I would more than likely do it.

    9. I thought about buying dolls to mod and customize, just to auction off. Proceeds could go to specific charities. I always feel that that is a great thing to do. I have painted and donated artwork to charity auctions in the past, and it's a great feeling to know you did something great.

If I get a good, steady job, I will consider it seriously. I'm not talking about buying incredibly pricey dolls, but nice dolls to work with, carefully customized or modded. Any and all sizes.

But...that's just me and a idea. lol

    10. I think it seems very wasteful and a bad way of managing my resources to spend all that money buying them in the first place to sell them at (what would probably be) a loss. Like someone else had said, it's diminishing returns. I'd be more likely to stop buying dolls a devote money that would have been spent on them on the good cause/project.

    11. The fact that it even crossed your mind, I found it a very selfless thought/gesture. :) As what most mentioned, if its just about money, it can be raised in other ways. And it really depends on what the money can help solve. If its medical bills etc, sure.. I might consider selling my dolls if they are the last option. If its gambling debts... no way.

    12. Yes, I would.

I was originally a one doll owner, and like being that way. i miss it a lot. After I spent the time with my dolls, and felt that I had a good amount of mileage out of them, I'd either go back to having one doll, or just one doll story. I'd sell the rest. I've contemplated doing so before just for the extra money -- and I would again, say, if I needed a downpayment on a house (the one I was going to buy fell through, but I'd do it again, as I also sold dolls to make my downpayment just like last time) or if I had some kind of emergency crop up - but also, were I well off, I'd considering selling my dolls and giving the profits to charity.

I support a lot of causes, so it'd be difficult to say which one, though.

    13. Would you sell your entire doll family or even consider selling a very special doll if it was for a good cause?

Hmm I'm a bit unclear about what you mean when you say "a good cause" translating that frase to my own language we usually mean a charity organisation when we say good cause. so are we taking about selling dolls for charity? or did you mean (like some people are talking about) good cause as like emergency money say for bills or morgage payments?

      Selling dolls for charity organisations:
No, I would not sell my dolls for a charity organisation. I already have monthly donation memberschips to about 4 charity organisations. would there be a special fundraiser action going on I would prefer to set up some other way to raise money (like my whole family is working together on a fundraiser for seeingeye and support dogs right now)

Selling dolls because of being in need of emergency money:
If there was any other way to get the money (which there usually is because I have a savings account for emergency purposes) I would never sell my dolls.

There is one exception though, dolls are a material possession. if I for any reason would not have money saved up, and I would have a Life or Death emergency no matter if its for me, my family or even my pets. Then Yes I would sell dolls to pay things like operation bills and such. why? because even if I can't replace my limited dolls I could always get other dolls. and a life is never just replaceble by an other life.

    14. When I hear 'good cause', I tend to think of charities and such. In that instance, no. I'm not an avid charity donator person but when a cause comes my way that I feel connected to (i.e. cancer research, as I have had many people close to me die of or have to suffer through cancer, SPCA when the collectors are out on the streets, or a recent one was the Paralympics to send the NZ team to the games, because I personally know one of the athletes and spent years training with him and look up to him as an idol). For those sorts of things, I wouldn't sell something (whether it be my doll or anything else) simply to have money to donate to that cause.

However in the case of emergency money, if I absolutely needed to, then yes, I would. But only if there was no other way for me to get money, because, let's face it, it can take a while to sell a doll. If you're looking for emergency money, it's not the best option if you're looking for a decent amount of money (i.e. the doll's worth) in a very short amount of time.

    15. I already donate to a couple of charities every year, and one of them happens to be our local Humane Society (which is a no-kill shelter). I keep my savings, investments, food/medication/bills money, charity money, and "play money" organized, so that I know what amount is going where, and when. So, to answer the question, no I would not sell my dolls to support a charity.

If, on the other hand, I found myself in a position where I desperately needed money to live on, and the only way to get it was selling non-essential items, I probably would sell my dolls. They're the only things of real value I own except my computer and photography equipment. For the record, I'd sell the photography equipment too, if I was desperate. Grace and I have to come first, no matter how much I love my material possessions. I am very attached to my dolls, and selling them would be really hard, but if it meant the difference between eating and not eating, I'd have to do it. I seriously think I would cry for real if I found myself in a position of selling Michael and Tyler, though. They'd be the last of my dolls to go.

    16. For me, it would have to be something HUGE. One of my relatives would have to be in desperate need of money in an extremely small time-frame, and I'd have to have no other options.

My dolls are more than just dolls to me; they are physical forms of the characters I've invented (some of which have existed for a loooong time). I love them very much, and they are a great source of pride. They'd just be too important to sell. Maybe I sound selfish, but they've become so much more than resin to me. They're a collection of little personalities. X'D

    17. Hm, I would have to say I would only do that as a last resort, and if I was feeling particularly charitable (I habe terrible mood swings...) In addition, I have so many other things I could sell first. If I had a lot of dolls, I probably would. However, I only have a handful of dolls right now. I couldn't bear to part with them!

    18. One thing is the need of animals is ENDLESS. You would be better to do a Saturday job or add a part time job to your schedule to consistantly invest in helping them. What would your do once you sold your dolls? then you have the same question all over again.

    19. I would if a family member or i needed cash badly for medical reasons, ut if its a small thing there is always garage sales and stuff to raise money for pets and stuff as well

    20. Yes depending on what it was for :)
I often jump between dolls, selling and buying regularly. I love owning and enjoying dolls but sometimes I feel like its time someone else might enjoy them more. I've sold dolls because of lack of funds, not bonding, or even needing funds for something else. I am in my last year of study and unemployed.. I only make money off of online graphics so dolls are actually a very large sum of money to me that I would otherwise not be able to get from somewhere else as fast.
Depending on the cause.. And to me a "good cause" could be anything of want or need in high priority and not necessarily a charity (maybe that's just me though) I may possibly sell my dolls.
Sometimes I do weigh up my dolls versus other things in real life.. Such as charity, moving out or even a nice car that could be purchased instead.
I actually do volunteer work at my local pound/animal shelter with my aunt and mother as their own sort of rescue service, and since going there have very drastically reduced the amount of put to sleeps to almost zero. If it were a cause like that.. I would rather be doing what I am doing.. Going in and taking photos, promoting the animals and finding them rescue/foster/forever homes, rather than giving them my money. Even if I had given them $1000 of money from some doll sales, I highly doubt it would have made as much difference as my volunteering work. In this case.. I would not donate money from doll sales but my time.
If it were something else... Such as my sister falling incredibly ill and needing funds that neither my
parents or her could provide I would definitely consider and probably sell my dolls if cash was needed immediately. My dolls are so important to me, but they are not worth more than a life (in my opinion)
Im sorry for writing so much lol @_@
