Yellowing: Is it "Natural" or does it constitute "Damage"?

May 14, 2009

    1. I know it's natural, but I very much dislike it. The yellowest doll I've owned was an older tiny I bought second-hand. She looked fine in the pictures but practically glowed yellow in person. I couldn't stand it. My mom has one doll (made of French resin, no less) and displays her in a sunny room and, as you can expect, she's gone butter yellow too. But it doesn't bother her at all and she thinks I'm overreacting. XD;

I know my oldest white skinned doll has yellowed some. I guess it doesn't bother me much with him since it's been such a gradual progression that I don't notice unless I compare pictures of when he was new. So that's good! I hope all of my brown skinned girls age well too. 'Cause no matter how you look at it the greeny color tan skin goes is way worse than yellow. XP.

    2. It's natural oxidization of the resin. As long as it wasn't excelerated unnaturally (ie, leaving doll in sun) it isn't negative. My oldest doll is nearly 9 years old and although he's yellowed naturally, he looks fine and is about the same colour as Volks Pureskin. It dosen't turn banana yellow.

    3. - Do you feel that yellowing is just a natural feature of resin, or does it constitute a damaged doll? Is yellowing a sign of a well-loved doll, or is it a defect that signifies improper care? i think it's just natural especially when you sleep with them, play with them a lot, it's a sign of well loved doll^^

      - When does yellowing cross the line between "acceptable" and "unacceptable"? it's doesn't matter, but with some dolls, like DOD, their skin got more beautiful when their skin yellowing

      - Would you buy a very yellowed doll? If so, would you try to "fix" it? Why or why not? it's doesn't matter as long as it's the perfect match color with the body XD

    4. Whitening toothpaste - I've never heard of that. Thanks for the heads up. I will try that...

    5. -Do you feel that yellowing is just a natural feature of resin, or does it constitute a damaged doll? Is yellowing a sign of a well-loved doll, or is it a defect that signifies improper care? Yellowing is natural for resin & if your doll yellows, it shows how long that you had the doll. So basically, a yellowed doll is an old doll that receives lots of love. ^^

      - When does yellowing cross the line between "acceptable" and "unacceptable"? I
      don't mind yellowing, but I don't prefer it. ^^;''

      - Would you buy a very yellowed doll? If so, would you try to "fix" it? Why or why not? I
      honestly wouldn't because I just don't prefer yellow-toned dollies.

    6. My doll, like me, never goes out in the sun, so any yellowing will probably be due to "the nature of the beast", as it were. I wouldn't consider it a defect, though, unless the differences from one spot to another were very noticeable. Either way, if I fell in love with a sculpt, I would just deal with it.

    7. that's a tricky question to pose in a way .. I mean it's a very natural thing but then again, it could be the owner took it outside or had it in the sun a lot... or they handled it a lot... so some might think that is damaged or poorly handled but I would think of it as much loved! They change tone anyway as the resin ages and we all know it happens. It's the degree you're talking about perhaps. I guess yellow could be the next fashion colour! :)

I'd buy it anyway if it suited the character I was after. I wouldn't try to correct it. I would probably expect a nice discount if I bought it though ;)

    8. I tink it is natural, it is just a particular caracteriscic of resin. but maybe I would consider damage if the doll is carelessly long periods of time under the sun or somewhere that could yellow resin faster.

    9. Yellowing is natural, but it does count as damage because it can decrease the value of a doll. I would rather spend a little more to get a non-yellowed doll in mint condition than buy a cheaper, yellowed version.

    10. Yellowing is not a real damage, but it counts a lot when you sell a doll.
Me too, I really don't like to buy yellowed dolls, in fact I prefer to buy new from companies... and make them yellow in my house (yeah, I've never sold anyone until now) XD

    11. It's natural, and I'd buy a semi-yellowed BJD second-hand if I loved the sculpt, but I don't think I could buy a REALLY yellow one :I

    12. Resin yellows. Its a fact of doll life. A doll isn't worthless because they're not brand-new-never-seen-the-sun condition. I think that yellowing can show that a doll has been well loved.

    13. I think it depends on how the doll is being taken care of

    14. Yellowing of our dolls is done deliberately by firmsspecially that dolls quickly grew old and came to the unpleasant appearance and we bought new.

    15. '

      *blink*

      *blink blink*

So you're...saying the companies deliberately make the dolls go yellow?

    16. -Do you feel that yellowing is just a natural feature of resin, or does it constitute a damaged doll? Is yellowing a sign of a well-loved doll, or is it a defect that signifies improper care? All dolls yellow anyway. It's like when people age - if you take proper care with your skin when you're 20 it will look better when you're 60, but you're still never going to be able to stay looking 20 forever. I think a doll's yellowing is just an indication that it's had a long life and I really don't mind it. I would never stop loving my dolls if they turned yellow (although my first doll has gone tan from white skin interestingly enough).

      - When does yellowing cross the line between "acceptable" and "unacceptable"? When it looks like the doll has been painted yellow somehow then I'll do something about it.

      - Would you buy a very yellowed doll? If so, would you try to "fix" it? Why or why not? Yep! As long as the price was lowered, otherwise I would just buy the doll new if possible. I'd probably try to dye it (which is what I plan on doing if my dolls ever go bannana yellow).

    17. Tez

Yes, this is my opinion.Tehnologii now as developed in all marzes that do not turn yellow in the resin is not a problem in reality..

    18. Why on earth would they do that? It isn't like we just go buy another doll when the first one gets yellow.

    19. I think it's natural, as yellowing is a property of resin, and something that it will eventually do no matter what. And I probably would buy a yellowed doll if it wasn't too 'banana yellow' and was one I wanted.

    20. If anything, the knowledge that a certain company's dolls might yellow faster than others might cause people to not buy dolls made by a company whose resin yellows faster. It makes no sense for companies to use resin which yellows faster.
