1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Your country's currency value... does it dictate your buying habits?

Jan 31, 2014

    1. The Dollar is really high right now, but I don't think it matters if a company is going to charge in Yen from now on. Exchange rates change all the time: Maybe in a year, the Yen is a really strong currency. It would be too much to ask of a company to constantly change the currency everytime the exchange rate is less beneficial.

As a seller, the exchange rate is also a necessary evil. In my Etsy shop, I was charging in Euro, my website however, uses the Dollar. This meant that I had to constantly check the two prices. And then, when I receive money that is not my own currency, I'm going to have to pay conversion fees, which is about 40 dollars for every doll I sell. This is why I've decided to create my own website, where I can use my own currency.

Using something different than a Dollar, however, also has downsides. Some customers are scared away when having to pay with foreign money (in my experience, these people are mostly from the US). Having to buy oversees is already a hurdle; having to pay in a different currency only adds to the stress.

One way or the other, exchange rates are a part of the international market.

    2. Well, if paying in a foreign currency is a problem for people ... Us Europeans here have to do it mostly every single time we buy a doll or a doll dress or doll shoes or a doll wig ...

Right now, the strong dollar is kinda killing me, too. But on the other hand - it IS good when you're trying to sell stuff. You can either lower the price (and still get what you wanted in your own currency) and have a better chance of selling it because you're selling it for cheaper than others. Or you can offer it at the same price as others and get more money out of it in your own currency.

    3. I feel very lucky that there are enough American collectors that a lot of what I buy in this hobby is labelled in USD, but I also pay for things in yen all the time because if I want them from Japan I have to. Am I more likely to buy things from Canada or Australia where I'll pay less than somewhere in Europe where I'll pay more? Of course. But I think that's why a lot of European sellers do mark things in USD, because it brings in a pretty large market - or really in a lot of cases Etsy does it automatically and we just go with it. There's just something psychologically deterrent in having to seemingly add more onto your total with conversion, even if that's not really what's happening.

A lot of the bigger doll companies have adjusted their prices over the years to reflect the proper exchange rate though. LUTS is the one I've been paying the most attention to, and since 2007 they've adjusted things up or down at least four times to even the cost for both their domestic Korean buyers and international buyers. So in general, even though it feels weird to convert currency, there is an effort to make sure that we're all paying the same price. It's just a pain when that price seems larger because your currency is having an off year (and that happens to the dollar as well).

    4. Currencies are always shifting comparative values. I've seen the USD strong (back when I collected anime cels and bought off YahooJapan, a dollar peaked around a value of 118 yen). But more recently it was only worth about 87 yen at one point. Last year, it was worth only 3/4 or less of a Euro at times. And there were many times in my various hobby past when buying something from Canada or Australia meant -- especially if one was viewing eBay-Australia or -Canada -- one had to spot the amount in USD dollars, which increased the listed price significantly.

So, always has been the thing that if I'm buying internationally, I have to consider what the item is, how much I really want it, and how much it will actually cost me - not only the conversion rate for the price, but the conversion rate applied to the - often already substantial - shipping cost. Sometimes it benefits me, sometimes the other person comes out a bonus winner (as when someone lists a $720USD doll, which is what it went for on the site, but after conversion, in USD I'd be paying about $875 for it). Xe.com is your friend - and remember that Paypal adds a couple of points against your end of the conversion rate, which is their commission for doing the work to make the transfer happen.

    5. Yesyesyesyesyes. The USD is almost 4 times the local currency right now that i'm rolling around in terrible despair Dx i want to buy things but AUGH. CURRENCY PLEASE.

    6. Now the exchange rate of the Russian rouble has fallen a lot, so YES, it's a quite tough for me T_T and for others too, I think
USD increased doubly, it was a real stroke...

    7. It's kind of good to know I'm not the only one struggling with this. But it still sucks xD I am definitely going to ask some companies if they would be willing to change the currency to jpy or something for me. I mean I don't think they would decline a sale? But at the same time I don't wanna cause any trouble.

    8. Marvel
I think if you make your order on the japanese (etc) version of site, not English, you can pay in yen c:

I didn't know not only in Russia there is such a problem with currency exchange value x)

    9. Hey Riya! Yes you're not alone xD I think I'll try that. Would be a lot better for me xD

    10. Currency value is a big problem for me because when the Australian dollar is down and always has been, making it really annoying when the USD value is so much higher then AUD. mostly meaning i have to wait for the AUD value to get higher for me to buy something or else something that is $130 USD becomes $190 AUD :(

    11. I'm canadian, and I feel this 100%. My layaway was 3 payments of 300 usd. It cost me about 1160 CAD. If I really want something though, I'll buy it, if it's in my budget.

    12. Not really, no. I have a tendency to overestimate my budgets for all overseas purchases so that will usually factor in the shift in currency values. Of course, if I had the choice to pay in USD, KRW, or in JPY, I'd naturally pick JPY and KRW since it's much cheaper when converted to SGD.

Aside from that, I also dabble in foreign currencies now and then so it does help lessen the impact.

    13. The rate between Brazilian Real and US Dollar is really painful for us Brazilians right now but it's rarely particularly good so I'm used to it. It's just way worse right now. In my case specifically I have the advantage that I work for a company in the US and I get paid in US Dollars through the internet, so I can save up money in the right currency for online purchases. That's probably not going to be the case forever though so I have to enjoy that while I can, haha. Generally speaking I'd say it has an influence on my purchases but doesn't necessarily dictates them, if something I want comes along and I know if I miss the chance I'll have trouble finding it again later, I'll buy it even if the currency conversion is bad, as long as I can afford it. That goes for all online purchases really.

    14. I've been re-thinking about buying a lot of stuff online or overseas now just because it's just getting too expensive for me to pay with other currency.

    15. exchange rates heavily influence my buying habits, I check them regularly and when the dollar goes up I try to buy everything I'd been wanting to buy when it was low ^^; right now the Japanese Yen is really low compared to the US Dollar and it's really making me want to order a ton of clothes from VOLKS

    16. right now it just hurts more and I do buy in smaller amounts... I'm also looking harder for 'local' talent for custom type work (sewing) I'm begining to get a feel for what it's like for some places who have to deal with 'ransoms' (customs) to get a doll now too...

    17. I always think twice when I buy something because I have to multiply everything times four (and nope, I don't make four times more uhm... coins lol :) ) That's mainly why i only buy things I *have* to such as fiber wigs and shoes. other than this I either shop domestically or just live without things (Or rather my dolls do ;))

    18. My $135 monthly layaway payments at DDE are currently costing me $190 Australian dollars. The exchange rate is doing my head in!

    19. Bringing this back because the Canadian dollar is at an all time low right when I was about to buy my first doll... Have any of you ever paid the Korean price (in Korean Won) rather than the USD price to save money? I asked souldoll about this & they said I could choose the currency I wanted to pay in but I'm not exactly sure of their answer... Actually, here is the answer word for word:
      Hello?

You can pay the cost in won via bankwire even if you live in anywhere.
Please state your request in order comments box when you make an order.
Contact us if you have any further questions.
      Thank you.

Anyone can help me figure this out? :doh

    20. Not anymore since I'm paid in dollar but as a freelancer I still don't get paid monthly but when I have a work to do. Still beat having to convert money.
