Your doll preferences?

Oct 11, 2022

    1. What specific traits do you normally look for when searching for dolls? What are for example your preferences when it comes to colour/size/gender/theme/style/expression etc.?

Me I normally go for a slightly dramatic and edgy kinda look. Also I'm quite a sucker for light wigs and eyelashes. ^^

    2. i tend to collect boy or "androgonous" dolls..in fact i think i only own one girl bjd lol and im a sucker for a moody/grumpy or half closed eyes look be that in the sculpt itself or faceup. i also love how emo and scene looks can translate to dolls so my group tends to dress like that.

      • x 3
    3. I love pouty lips, pointy ears, small fangs or teeth and a sleepy/lowkey evil look. And if they are styled in a white wig then I cant resist them:love

    4. While I like both male and female dolls, I have far more female dolls in my collection.

I have found that I prefer to have my dolls in tan resin overall or will choose white skin over natural/normal skin tones. I love seeing various colors of resin however have learned that no fantasy colors will stay in my collection and get sold after a year or so.

Same for vampire sculpts, I really like looking/seeing others but they don't tend to say in my collection.

My size preference fluctuates every few years (I have from tinies to standard SD sizes). Currently my love is in the big baby size, which I never thought I'd like.

As far as aesthetics go, I like fully painted lips not lightly painted or ones with a "heart" shape covering the top/bottom lips. I have a couple of gothic painted dolls but have no desire for any more in that style. I'm currently tending to like face ups that are slightly more than "natural" but not near "glamorous" styles.

I like more "period/era" specific clothing vs casual styles.

    5. Honestly mine are all so different, I can't say I collect a "type". I do avoid ones that are really round faced, and most of the child-like chubby cheeked sorts, but I can't really pick a common point with any of the rest.

      • x 2
    6. I mostly have elves. But I don't buy elves with fangs. I guess that's my type hahah.

      • x 4
    7. Mine are all really different, but I have a gothic aesthetic for the majority of them. The more recent dolls are more colorful, while the older ones have a more elegant, dark vibe to their aesthetics. As for looks...really whatever strikes my fancy at the time? It's really just dependent on the inspiration I have. I do avoid child-like dolls, though, or really large dolls (I have a few SD but I've mostly gone to smaller dolls in lieu of moving). I prefer pretty unique facial sculpts, so I think the only dolls I have from the same companies are my Minifees and the two Soom Sweet Witches I own.

    8. I mostly only collect human dolls in 1/3 scale. Gender doesn't really matter, just depends on which character I'm trying to sell. As to style, I have a variety ranging from pretty pastel ballerina to goth to emo to skater to Barbie inspired and more.

    9. 1/3 adult women, mostly, but a handful of cute 1/4 too just because I like variety lol. Mostly I like sewing ladies fashion so I think that's why.

    10. My preference is dolls male or female (referring to body/ sculpt) around 56-60cm who are not especially thin, who have different very pleasing features like ome shapeliness somewhere such as very pretty legs or cleavage on girl bodies, pretty hands/nails, pretty feet, I don't think I prefer normal resin color but I don't like white resin very much or resin that is more pink than yellow but I also really enjoy shades of tan or brown. I like bigger than average heads (for dolls these days) and rounder faces, chubby cheeks, square jaws, pointy chins, medium or large eyes and expressions that lean towards smiling and frowning. I generally dislike far apart eyes and faces that are slim in the lower half of the face.
My common styling themes are: modern casual, and subculture fashion from some point in the past.
Common character traits are that most of my dolls tend to be friendly and in their young adult years, occasionally teen.
I tend to have used a lot of blue and green eyes (maybe because that's what my family had). I'm on a never ending hunt for more wigs with no bangs. I like medium length hair the most and I love longer hair with a loose wave to it.

    11. I've found that the 1/3 size of around 60-65cm is my sweet spot - I've tried and failed to get into minis/smaller, and I think 70cm+ will be too much resin to handle.

Head sculpts... the only part that I'm really picky about is the mouth: shape and size of lips, degree of overbite. Closed mouth is a must - I find open mouth (especially with teeth showing) extremely unattractive. Also not a fan of pouty lips - I prefer a more neutral, serene mouth! This is the make-or-break feature: if I don't like the mouth, it doesn't matter of the rest of the sculpt is gorgeous - I won't consider it further.

I also prefer open eyes - I'm not against dreamy/closed eyes, but they don't really move me.

Bodies... I like youthful and slim and a bit androgynous (ie. less sex differentiated) on both sexes, and small busted girls. Not into hunky male and curvy, big busted female bodies.

I also go for strictly human dolls - no fantasy parts, elf ears, vampire teeth. I might be persuaded by mech/robot and armour parts, but so far haven't found any I really want to own yet.

Style... I have a weakness for kimono, hakama, hanfu... everything traditional East Asian. But when I want a change from kimono, my crew is in modern smart casual.

    12. I like masculine sculpts the most, but I prefer them when they're interesting to look at. If they're just standard pretty boys it's boring, but if they have unique features like high cheekbones (this is my fave) or big noses or a strong jaw or brow line, I take a second look. That said, I also really like Resinsoul sculpts, and they've got kind of streamlined faces, so sometimes I question what I really look for in sculpts. I also really like if they're smiling. Right now I'm really into Luts' Darae and Charm Doll's Circe, for example.

    13. For males:
Color- I prefer fantasty colors (I especially like purple, pink, & grey fantasty resins) and tan (trying to get all shades of tans light to dark resin). I will get normal or white resin because most floating heads i bought are only available in those colors which is too bad.

Size- I prefer 65 to 75 cm. I do have some smaller than 65 cm.

Gender- it's about equal. I get whatever catches my eye. Some dolls are males, some females, some androgynous, some aren't even human so i don't know what gender they will be I guess it will be up to my mood on what I want that doll's character to be. I used to mainly prefer male dolls, but I'm starting to like more variety of dolls.

Theme- I never thought of this. I suppose East Asian traditional looks from the past, dark concepts like assassins, sad back stories, idols, fantastical characters such as a gumiho, etc.

Style- I haven't made a huge selection of outfits for my male dolls yet. I'm not good at fashion. I suppose East Asian traditional and dark fashion. For the face ups I prefer an idol/Korean celebrity look or something unique like Peakswoods Gumiho Neo face up.

Expression- I like a gloomy sad expression or neutral. I do like unique face sculpts like a smirk or a winking face. I am learning to like the open mouth teeth face sculpts, but the full eye smile and large wide grin is hard for me to like. A little small smile is fine.

Facial features- I prefer sharp cat-like eyes shape with or without double eyelids is fine, medium nose bridge, sharp nose with a slope, thin to medium size nose, cheek bones that is not too strong & not too soft, a face in between masculine and soft like a Korean idol or Korean actor, not too boyish, jawline not too sharp that it looks like it can stab me or too angular, no facial hair face ups, and I think that's it. It doesn't have to match exactly.

      For females:
Color- I'm not sure. I seem to get fantasty colors often for my females. I end up getting normal resin for my females as well because the heads I bought are only offered in normal or white resin. I always think white will look too white, so I end up getting normal. I think if given the choice i would pick tan, fantasty, or a pale color that isn't too pale.

Size- I'm okay with 45 cm to 65 cm, but I think I prefer 58 cm to 65 cm. I'm not too sure with my female dolls.

Gender- same as previous answer for gender

Theme- I think traditional East Asian themes, princesses, mythical/ supernatural creatures (vampires, gumiho, faeries/elves, mermaid, etc), idols, etc.

Style- For the fashion I prefer traditional East Asian, princess, lolita, ethereal looks, kawaii, idol, etc. For the face up I prefer Korean idol/Korean celebrity looks, Japanese make up styles, and unique face ups like Peakswoods Gumiho Miro. I also like the Korean gradient lip make up look over a full lip make up look. I don't like super strong make up looks unless its for a certain concept. I also like fantasty face ups.

      Expression- same as the male

Facial features- I think I might prefer in my female dolls a soft face that doesn't look too generic. If I think i can find that face somewhere else I don't want the face sculpt that much except one or two to have in my collection. I think I prefer small to medium sharp or soft eyes like a cat or a doe with or without double eyelids is fine. I don't like when the eyes take up half the face. The nose I think I might like it to be button or slightly upturned, but I'm not sure. I don't want the nose to be too big or too small. The lips to be medium size not too small or big. Although big lips are fine too if it goes well with the face. I want a medium nose bridge. I don't want a nose that is too flat or too wide, but I am not too sure. I haven't seen a doll with the features I listed that I don't want in my female dolls. I might like the face if I actually see it with all the features I listed that I don't want in my doll. The distance between the nose and lips matter to me for my male and female dolls. If it is too close or too far I feel like the face looks off balanced which makes me not want the doll. I don't like when the jawline is too sharp. I think that's about it.

I don't know if what I like will change, but from what I read on DOA it seems people's taste in dolls change over time to liking only specific dolls or people's preferences broaden to include more variety of styles of dolls.

    14. Lately, I've noticed I have an affinity to sculpts with purposefully asymmetrical eyes. Sculpts that are winking, have scars over one eye, etc. just really catch my attention. I also tend to go for male or androgynous sculpts, fantasy sculpts (pointy ears, sculpted fangs/claws, animal features), and there are definitely certain eye and nose shapes that I tend to gravitate towards (the cute ski jump nose on my DZ Benjamin or my wishlist doll DC Snowborn, for example).

    15. Hmm.... since I've started, I noticed I like to gravitate towards sensual sculpts, lips slightly parted or face sculpts that have a particular expression, like a mysterious smile or a mischievous look. I'm also fond of fantasy sculpts, though that's often hit or miss. I know for sure that more streamlined faces I generally tend to gloss over.

    16. For size, my dolls have a range from 23 cm - 73 cm so I can't really say I have a preference lol. I focus more on sculpt and features than size. If the sculpt I fall in love with happens to only be one size, well, that's the size I'm getting!

I've only ever been drawn to one female sculpt, and not enough to want to bring her home. So I am only interested in boys or androgynous. Open eyes, with soft smiles. I have at least partial face blindness, and because of this most BJDs have a lot of "same face" going on for me. I find them pretty still, but I'd never want to own one. I have a mighty hankering for a distinctive nose on a boy, but I haven't found a sculpt that makes my brain go "YASSSS" so I might end up making a thread for some suggestions at one point xD.

I also lean heavily towards sculpts with fantasy parts. Only 1 out of the 4 dolls I own/am waiting for is a straight up human. I have a cat-taur and an anthro weasel and an eagle boy and those are always the sculpts I zero in on when a new sculpt comes out lol. Not the chibified Dream Island type (though I do think those are very cute), my preference leans much more towards the realistic/detailed end. Think Dream Valley or Miracle Doll. They must have fantasy legs at the very least. I don't like if it's an animalistic head on a regular human body.

    17. My dolls inhabit a fantasy world of my imagination, and as such I am free to explore all the diversity I want. Each doll is decidedly character based, so that will always give me a distinct direction when choosing a specific sculpt. In my collection I have humans, elves, and anthros in every size you can imagine. That being said however, I do have certain things I am naturally drawn to. No super realistic faces thank you…I prefer a more stylized look. And I love a long, lithe body (extra joints are delightful.) No big round boobs on females or overly muscular men, thank you. I adore animal feet when I can get them. And I currently have all colors of resin, but I’m an absolute sucker for fantasy colors if they’re available in a sculpt I want.

    18. I personally prefer guys. I don't know why, but when I look at female sculpts, they don't seem to stick for some reason.

But not the extremely built ones with extreme muscle definition, veins and harshly defined abs or strong jawlines, which seem to be the norm in the category I am interested in, seeing as the dolls with my aesthetics tend to be on the bigger side (65cm~80cm). I do like guys with muscles, but he needs to be slender but not skeletal, have a soft appearance with gentle definition and no harsh lines. They give me the impression that they could be a gentle, approachable, and understanding friend. (I recently discovered that there is a Chinese term for this called: Junzi). I might come over as rude, but to me, those bodybuilder sculpts give me the feeling that strength trumps all.

I have not done as much research into heads yet, but the same applies here. I prefer gentle smiles, neutral expressions or slightly melancholic ones. They resonate much more with me than extreme emotions such as elation, disgust or distain. I also like sleeping heads or heads with half closed eyes, but I haven't found any yet that appeal to me and are on the bigger side. For some reason very wide-open mouths where you can see the tongue scare me a little.

Fantasy parts like wings, claws, digitigrade legs, animal lower bodies/heads are also interesting to me, but they seem to be a little niche for this size category from my research so far.

As for clothes, I'm currently elbow deep in the Victorian gentleman fashion style. I love suits, (swallow) tailcoats, top hats, pocket watches, walking canes, monocles and glasses! On a similar note, butler attire is also very attractive to me. But other than that, I've always been weak for hanfu. Those clothes just seem so soft, ethereal, flowy and very comfy!

    19. - Smiley sculpts (or "neutral" expressions)

      - Open mouths (teeth are a bonus)

      - Fully open eyes (not closed or part closed)

      - The majority of my dolls are children, not teens or adults, so they nee dot have a suitably immature body silhouette(I avoid childlike faces on busty/mature figured bodies as that just creeps me out).

      - No whiteskin - it just looks unfinished/inclomplete to me. No grey either (I hate the colour) but most other skintones would be fine, though I prefer ones that can at least "pass" for human.

      - Size wise I tend to gravitate to SD size, but pretty much like any size, although , for some reason around 8inch dolls just don't work for me. I tend to "neglect" them and leave them unplayed-with

      - Girls predominate but I think that's mainly becuase I don't like sewing for boys as much as I do for girls, and there's far less choice/availability when it comes to buying bthe styles of boy clothes that I like.

      - Victorian and generically "old fashioned" styles predominate among my doll gang. Very few of them are dressed modern.

    20. My preferences change alot but I'm a sucker for 'ancient/old' or 'godly/royal' styles. I definitely prefer the 65cm+ male dolls, no big preference for skin colour. I'm not too picky on facial expressions, but I like ones with mouth showing (tongue, teeth, stuff like that) or cocky expressions.

Buuut at the same time I also like the soft eyes and smiles.. one thing that I won't waver on is big eyebrows. I like those alot.

I like over the top clothing, layer upon layer of fancy clothes lol I also like big bodies.
