Your last doll

Nov 5, 2013

    1. My collection is definitely not complete...

Do you have a set number or criteria for when your collection is complete, or will it never be complete?

I guess it never be complete...

How many dolls do you have? How many do you want?
Four... For now I still want two sd size and one msd size...at least...

If you could only have one more doll what would it be?
      msd size-boy

Do you collect all the dolls first and finish their customizing later or stop after each new purchase to work on the doll?
      Latter

Do you think you'll stay in the hobby once your collection is complete?
      I guess yes.

    2. This is an interesting topic, and one I have been thinking about.

When and how did you decide your collection was complete?
Ah, so there are those stages of being a bjd collector, I think. When I first started, I was only going to get one doll. ^_~
Then I was only going to get 2 (one boy and one girl)…or 3 dolls (because I fell in love with another girl doll and she had to be added to the collection, but then that boy doll!). ^.^"
      Sound familiar?
Then, I realized I was in trouble and I thought, well then I'll eventually get 10 dolls. No more than 10! >.<
I'm sure you can see where this is going. Hehe.
So now my collection has blossomed over 10 dolls (and I never did get that first boy doll I had planned)…and to be honest, I feel a bit overwhelmed by them. That lead me to really think about "completing" my collection. I tried to take a good, hard look at my dolls: to see what each of them meant to me, how I felt about them, who needed work, if anyone needed to go. It was a really different feeling than I had ever had in the hobby, but I knew I couldn't keep going in the same way I had.

How many dolls do you have?
      15
Which is to say, one girl may or may not have a twin made out of parts that I currently own…but I'm not certain if I want to make that second character…I'm still on the fence. I do currently have one doll on layaway. So, with all those included it would be 15.

Have you sold any along the way?
No. At one point, when it first struck me that I really needed to complete my collection I had a crazy thought to sell a good half of them…but it passed. There is something about each doll I have collected that keeps them dear to me, so they have all stayed.

What was the last doll you bought? Why did you chose that one?
So for a good while now…I have been trying to really stop collecting new dolls. As I mentioned before, my collection was starting to overwhelm me. Also, I had managed to acquire a grail doll that I had been…well…stalking for over a year. It was one of those moments where the stars align, the clouds part, and there she is. Home. Hehe. So that seemed like a good stopping point. ^_~
That said, I had wandered into the marketplace earlier this week out of a vague sense of boredom. Sometimes I just like to see all the dolls in there…but, I found a doll I had loved since I first started the hobby. A doll that I had completely given up on ever owning for various reasons (the company discontinued the doll, for one thing, but before that they had also changed their resin formula to one I wasn't fond of…a few times…and before that discontinued the resin color I specifically wanted, etc., etc.). So, there she was, and in the specific permutation I desired. I hesitated…but all the old ideas for her floated up from some place I had forgotten about. Hehe. I wanted her. I was surprised. I had become so used to the idea that it was not to be. I had the difficult discussion about buying another doll with my husband. Hehe. I bought her on layaway. She is a Mecha Angel Saiph. <3

Are you on hiatus from buying new dolls for a few years or are you finished altogether?
      Honestly…my hope is all together.

Once all of your dolls are finished (If they aren't already) will you stay in the hobby?
Hehe, some are very far from finished. I don't see myself leaving the hobby, but it is a bit different. I feel like there is a stage where you hang out in waiting rooms and follow up enthusiastically on each new release from your favorite company…but while I still like to see the new dolls, that doesn't really work for me any more. Instead I've been following crafters, seeing what people are doing in the sewing threads, the customization threads, the gallery, and trying to offer advice about some of the things I've learned over the years to newer hobbyists if they can use it. ^_^

Do you still feel involved in the hobby when you're not buying any new dolls?
In some ways no. There is a very definite part of this hobby that is about purchasing. But in other ways yes. I am much more comfortable with my dolls now, so pushing myself to do aesthetic things I have shied away from in the past is no longer so hard for me. Hehe. I have already worked up the courage to wipe limited faceups and pierce my Amber's ears. I'm just at a stage where I realize these are my dolls, they don't seem to be going anywhere…I may as well do as I please with them. ^_~
Hehe, that may sound silly, but I think it's easy to get intimidated in this hobby about certain things.

    3. Do you have a set number or criteria for when your collection is complete, or will it never be complete?
My collection is separated into different groups that will be completed at some point, yes. Whether I continue to add groups depends on whether I continue to see molds that inspire me.

How many dolls do you have? How many do you want?
I currently have four full dolls and a body, and a fifth doll on layaway. I have 14 dolls on my wishlist that I intend to bring home eventually; I have 12 other sculpts noted that I like, but don't have concepts/characters yet for. (I don't add dolls to my to-buy list until they have a name.)

If you could only have one more doll what would it be?
That's tough! A Supia Rosy, probably, as I've loved her sculpt for years now.

Do you collect all the dolls first and finish their customizing later or stop after each new purchase to work on the doll?
I try to customize between doll purchases, to keep myself from spending too much on resin all at once. I don't do much customizing myself, and I don't enjoy looking at blank/naked/standard dolls all the time!

Do you think you'll stay in the hobby once your collection is complete?
I'm kind of on the outskirts of the hobby as it is, and I don't 'play' with my dolls, so it's entirely possible I'll drop off the radar entirely. On the other hand, I do like seeing new sculpts and other people's creations, so who knows!

    4. Do you have a set number or criteria for when your collection is complete, or will it never be complete?
I used to, then time goes on and new dolls are release. I don't think I'll ever really be finished.

How many dolls do you have? How many do you want?
I only planned two girls in the start. Now I have 9 dolls, boys and girls.

If you could only have one more doll what would it be?
SID Aria. I need her to pair with my EID Rex. I also want three other dolls but if I can only pic one it would be her.

Do you collect all the dolls first and finish their customizing later or stop after each new purchase to work on the doll?
I plan the character and gather their style, the get the doll, then I work on that one doll until it's 'finished' (customising, tattoos, right hair cut.) I never get another doll until I'm done with the last one.

Do you think you'll stay in the hobby once your collection is complete?
I'd still look at things and talk on the forum, but the more I'd look the more things I'd want. I 100% would stay but I've really come to terms with it now, I don't think I'll ever be "done".

    5. Do you have a set number or criteria for when your collection is complete, or will it never be complete?
I set an number plus criteria. It will be complete when I add a chocolate/dark tan doll at least.

How many dolls do you have? How many do you want?
      I have 8 but wanted only 6.

If you could only have one more doll what would it be?
I'm not sure. I feel like I have too many now.

Do you collect all the dolls first and finish their customizing later or stop after each new purchase to work on the doll?
I work on all my dolls in tandem. But I don't do any real customizing to my dolls other than buying their eyes, wig and getting their face up.

Do you think you'll stay in the hobby once your collection is complete?
I'm not sure how to answer this question. But even if I'm not buying new dolls I will still enjoy the ones I have regardless of whether or not I am participating in the social aspect.

    6. Do you have a set number or criteria for when your collection is complete, or will it never be complete? Definitely no set number... and I don't know that it will ever be complete. There will always be new sculpts coming out that I might want!

How many dolls do you have? How many do you want? I have 40. :sweat I'm not going to say I want a certain number because as I said, there will always be new dolls to tempt me.

If you could only have one more doll what would it be? Probably a fullset Volks Kazuya Kujo.

Do you collect all the dolls first and finish their customizing later or stop after each new purchase to work on the doll? I usually like to give myself a little time in between dolls to work on them.

Do you think you'll stay in the hobby once your collection is complete? Definitely! Sharing photos, buying new clothes and such is how I enjoy them.

    7. Do you have a set number or criteria for when your collection is complete, or will it never be complete? As I love the Avengers from the movie, I want to dollify the ones I really like. Which will be Tony Stark (already at home), Black Widow (also here), Hawkeye (will be an Iplehouse Storm), and Thor (Iplehouse Rex). Ah, and of course Loki (at the moment he is extremly puny...just a head).
How many dolls do you have? How many do you want? I have four at the moment. Finally there will be six.
If you could only have one more doll what would it be? Iplehouse Rex.
Do you collect all the dolls first and finish their customizing later or stop after each new purchase to work on the doll? I would rather gather the dolls first. As this is right now financially impossible, I am crafting the costumes, accessories, etc. for those who are already on board.
Do you think you'll stay in the hobby once your collection is complete? Why not? I am always interested in new trends in a hobby. There is more to the BJD hobby than collecting dolls. Maybe I will take the plunge and try my hand at face-ups. My Carina and the god of mischief really need a new face...at the moment I am thinking about sending them to an artist. But I would so love to be able to do them myself. New challenges are always good, I think.

    8. Do you have a set number or criteria for when your collection is complete, or will it never be complete?
I just go with the flow - I don't have any plans and my wishlist is only small as I don't consider buying really expensive dolls and am quite particular about the face on the dolls I do buy. So if a new face grabs me, I'll add it to the wishlist!

How many dolls do you have? How many do you want?
7 dolls on display, plus a bunch of dolls boxed 'to sell' (whenever I get around to it, unless I change my mind again LOL) I don't really WANT any more dolls, but I enjoy buying them, waiting for them, getting a new doll, dressing it etc. So until the money runs out or I am down to the last few dolls I really can't bear to sell, I will keep on buying new dolls! I don't really like having too many dolls on display though - I'd like to keep it at around 7 big dolls, 7 midi dolls and just a few tinies, so as I buy new, I tend to look critically at my collection and think 'do I REALLY love you?' If the answer is 'meh' I put them in their box for a while to see if I miss them, or get any new ideas for their look.

If you could only have one more doll what would it be?
I have no idea - I don't really lust after particular dolls, except for my impldoll Marcus gladiator, which I bought almost immediately - I'd probably buy a duplicate of him LOL

Do you collect all the dolls first and finish their customizing later or stop after each new purchase to work on the doll?
I am basically lazy and find crafting such hard work - I enjoy shopping! So at the moment, till the money runs out, I am at the doll-gathering phase indefinitely. If I find myself eventually with no spare cash, and no dolls to sell to get money to buy new dolls, then I'll start sewing. At the moment I prefer to spend money on resin rather than clothes/wigs etc. so they are a sad bunch of half-dressed dolls for now LOL

Do you think you'll stay in the hobby once your collection is complete?
At the moment, the doll hobby (shopping) is what stops me dying of boredom, so I'll carry on with it until I find something more interesting to do, rather than until I feel I have all the dolls I want. If I find something more interesting to do with my time, I will probably sell most of my dolls apart from a couple of beloved ones. I like the idea of ultimately having just a couple of dolls to fuss over and spoil, more than the idea of having a vast collection of dolls. I think no matter what, I will always have at least a couple of bjd to care for, as I've found it to be such a fulfilling hobby for me.

    9. Do you have a set number or criteria for when your collection is complete, or will it never be complete?

It will be complete with probably 9 dolls. I don't really want any more than that.

How many dolls do you have? How many do you want?

I'm almost done paying for the body for #8. He probably won't have the head I want till next year though. I can't even order him till Dec because MOC won't be sending in the order till then and it also takes a long time to order from the company I want him from so it would be Spring most likely till I had him anyhow. #9 is going to be a RS Dai most likely.

If you could only have one more doll what would it be?

I'd stop with the boy head I have planned for #8 but I really want a Dai actually...

Do you collect all the dolls first and finish their customizing later or stop after each new purchase to work on the doll?

Dolls first though I am hopefully working on them as I collect.

Do you think you'll stay in the hobby once your collection is complete?

Yes but I will likely stop buying dolls after the boy I am working on now and Dai. 9 is more than enough for me.

      Thanks for reading :aheartbea

    10. Or for people whose collections are not yet complete:

Do you have a set number or criteria for when your collection is complete, or will it never be complete?

No, I don't have a limit in mind. As long as there are dolls I love and want and have the money to buy them I will get more. I don't think I will ever have a complete collection.

How many dolls do you have? How many do you want?

I have 39 dolls at home and 18 more ordered or on the way. I don't know how many dolls I want, it's all a matter of space I think^^ I just love big collections!

If you could only have one more doll what would it be?

Just one??? OMG... It would be a Borol fullset, my grail doll.

Do you collect all the dolls first and finish their customizing later or stop after each new purchase to work on the doll?

I keep buying dolls and customizing others at the same time. I order new dolls every month, if I'd stop until a doll is finished I would miss out on a lot of dolls...

Do you think you'll stay in the hobby once your collection is complete?

I will stay in the hobby as long as I am interested in BJDs. I might buy less dolls at some point due to getting children and having less money to spend on dolls. But buying is a part of collecting for me.

    11. Do you have a set number or criteria for when your collection is complete, or will it never be complete?
No set criteria or number, really. I have a wishlist, but also consider new dolls. I suppose if Soom stopped making new dolls, my wishlist would become my set list. If Soom stopped making dolls today, I'd have about 10-15 dolls before my collection was 'complete'.

How many dolls do you have? How many do you want?
This is a complicated question for me, because I have multiple heads sharing bodies. I have 14 bodies, and 28 heads. I also have scores of fantasy parts, which also mostly share bodies. I'm planning on ordering two more dolls right now, as well.

If you could only have one more doll what would it be?

I couldn't possibly choose. If someone put a gun to my head, I'd just choose at random from my wishlist, because I want them all equally as much.

Do you collect all the dolls first and finish their customizing later or stop after each new purchase to work on the doll?

I prioritise getting the actual doll pieces first, because almost every doll I want is a Limited Edition. I buy wigs/clothing/eyes in between big doll purchases. Eventually, if I 'complete' my collection, I'll dedicate my whole hobby budget to 'finishing' the dolls themselves.

Do you think you'll stay in the hobby once your collection is complete?

Yep! If anything, I'll probably be more active once I have more finished dolls to post photos of :)
