Your opinion on dolls who are made into celebrities or fandom characters

Feb 17, 2013

1. i find them kinda cool. being able to create an accurate bjd from a real person or character is really cool~ the only time it weirds me out is when I see people trying to sell a doll based off a real person and the pics they show are all of the nude doll. Otherwise its really neat to see for me :)

2. I was thinking about having a bjd of an actor I have a crush on. That would be pretty sweet! AS far as character dolls I think that is awesome! I have 2 Lady Amalthea BJDs. I love to see how different artist will make a character.

3. When I get my dolls I have some cosplay plans for them. I'll have to commission the outfits, since I've never made my own clothes.
I, too, couldn't imagine making a doll look like an actor. It's not within my own tastes. I'd find it a bit weird.

4. I don't think it's bad because in the end you can just consider your doll a cosplayer. They'll change clothes frequently if you're into that. Why not be a celebrity for 1 day.

5. I really like character dolls (naturally as those are the only dolls I have). I love the restriction. I love that I can't just make shit up just because I felt like changing them one day or because I didn't like a certain aspect of their personality. I also get that it's really hard though. The two characters that I have are both very realistic and very complex so I don't usually have to wonder or make up what they would do in a certain situation. If a character is not well written though...I couldn't have a doll of it because then I'd be making up parts of their personality and then I'd always have to worry whether I'm messing up the character or not.

As for having a doll of an actual person...I find it a little creepy. Not say it's bad or anything! I just tend to think that they seem to be pushing the uncanny valley button a bit.

6. I think it's fun to see how other people create and display them, I just don't do it for my dolls unless it's temporary costume. Outside of BJDs, I actually collect dolls and figures from my various fandoms, but I think of my BJDs differently because I enjoy changing their outfits and wigs. My other dolls don't usually get re-dressed. So in my own collecting, fandom dolls and BJDs are mostly a separate thing, but I will say I've seen some pretty cool representations of existing characters on this forum, and I can see that a lot of passion and work goes into making them.

7. Definitely not my thing. I just always wonder what the celebrity whose likeness is being used would think.... O.o.....

8. i don't think i would ever have a movie character or celebrity doll because my doll's represent my own characters and help me better visualize them but i love see other peoples fandom dolls as its amazing how much detail, time and love they put into them.
if i was ever going to make one it would probably be a Thorin Oakenshield/Richard Armitage one :D

9. I think it's fine if you really love the character, I'm making my Pullip into Clementine from the walking dead video game. As of making a bjd into a one, i wouldn't do myself, bjds are on a whole different level, like it's cool but I would like mine to be my creation, with their own story I made

10. Totally unoriginal!! (Please wait while I hide my Chobits Chii conversion. I wouldn't want to come across as a hypocrite!)

11. Sculpts that resemble real life celebrities make me about as uncomfortable as those rubber Richard Nixon masks.

Dolls dressed up like fictional characters reminds me of cosplay. The closer it is to the original the better I tend to like them.

12. I never thought of this but then I came upon this boy and his face screams "MAKE ME INTO A DOLL" so I'm looking for a doll with his facial structure. The reason why I got interested in him is because he has the same hair/eye color as my first doll^^ so I see him as the big brother or an older representation of my doll.

13. to be honest i think they are cool .. but not thaaat cool that i will make one myself .. most of my dolls have stories from my dreams .. their stories are all madeup by me .. which makes me love them even more:aheartbea .. because it makes them closer to me :) ....

14. It's not something I would have any interest in doing, but I don't have a problem with some else doing it. I enjoy getting to see the creativity people have put into it.

15. Personally I don't want any celebrity/fandom BJDs, but I can see why people enjoy them because I like Hot Toys figures. With BJDs, I just want to create characters instead of making existing ones since there are other options out there and I don't have the patience to create or track down a Jack Sparrow outfit or Batman suit so I tend to buy pre-existing movie/character merchandise. I do enjoy looking at what other people have done with character dolls though as there are some pretty awesome ones (Kavarr's Lokis come to mind, especially the Jotun version :)).

16. I've made one based of a character in a video game, but I wouldn't create real life celebs and what not. I generally prefer my dolls being original characters, but I do like looking at the fandom dolls and seeing how people create them.

17. Right, because cosplaying in general is worthless... Anyway, if you get a doll that looks like a person or character, but you simply turn it into your OWN character who sometimes COSPLAYS as the original, then guess what? It IS original. AND versatile.

The idea of having a BJD that can only look ONE way - I can't fathom it. Just can't.

18. Thanks Amberleigh i'm glad you like my Loki's :)
I obviously love my character dolls as well as my OCs. Four of my guys are based on non original characters (Thor, Loki x 2 and Tony Stark) and three are actual minimee sculpts of the actors. Both my versions of Loki have DIM Tom Hiddleston heads and I just received my Robert Downey jr boy to make Tony Stark. For my Thor I used and Iplehouse Claude. I don't feel at all restricted with these guys and they are just as much fun as my OCs.

They are not unoriginal otherunicorn as you are only restricted by your imagination. My imagination lets me create other scenarios and stories for them. Sometimes I put them in their movie costumes but at other times I put them in other cloths that I think they may wear. I don't think either dolls based on non original character or OCs are better. It's just like some people prefer one thing over another.

Bambi Darling RDJ posted one of another persons Loki with a mini iron m figure an on his facebook and it was pretty funny. He is also into posting pics of the Hot Toys figures which I also collect. (Yep i'm a Marvel fan). He even recently found fan fiction/art including slash and that was even funnier. As for how celebs would feel I don't think many would mind as they are not much different to having a large customizable action figure and it is just another form of fan art.

And just for the heck of it here are a couple of pics of my Loki's

Jotun Loki (his frost giant form)

19. Kavarr, it's your Asgard Loki that always amazes me when I see him around!

And I'm just going to back up that it's not in any way unoriginal to have a character doll. It can take a lot of creativity and effort to bring them about, honestly! You can't easily just go out and buy something like that Loki outfit, or the outfits that my characters will have, as I finish more of them. (One of them has a "mockup" that I'm preparing a final version for, the others are still being drafted.) You may have to mod parts to suit. Finding the right wig can be a nightmare. And of course, there's the option of working out "what else will they wear?" "What other situations can they be in?"

My collection has a decent divide between Fan and Original Characters, and I don't think either groups limits my creativity and originality.

20. I'm in the "have some fandom, have some OC" dolls. For my video game character dolls, I really try to catch their look and character. For a doll like my Twilight Sparkle, I sat and thought about how this non-human character would look as a human. For characters from books, I tend to make them match the image in my head, not illustrations or movie depictions. I certainly don't feel limited by choosing to have dolls of favorite characters. The earliest creative writing assignments we're given as children are often "Imagine Character A in Scenario B. How do you think they would react?" Having character dolls is an outgrowth of that for me.

As far as having a character doll from a live-action show or movie, I am far more likely to look for a doll that captures that character's overall feel rather than looks exactly like the actor. Maybe that's the theatre background talking, but I keep in mind that an actor in a role is perhaps a second or third choice, or maybe was picked because it was an open-casting call and that actor read the best on that day. If I were to make a Han Solo doll for example, I would try to find a sculpt that exuded cockiness, roguishness, but a noble spirit, rather than look for a sculpt that looks exactly like young Harrison Ford. I'm not big on realistic sculpts myself, so a lot of the celebrity-inspired sculpts just aren't even on my radar. ^^;

I think the individual's interpretation of a character is what makes it unique, because each individual brings their own perceptions and opinions to the character, and I don't think having a fandom doll is in any way limiting or narrowing.
