Your opinion on dolls who are made into celebrities or fandom characters

Feb 17, 2013

    1. Lots of people make dolls of pop culture characters. My sister's 70cm is styled on Jareth from Labyrinth, a good amount of mine are characters from TV, music, movies, and books. They've also got a few costumes so they can play super heroes.

I don't see any problem making a doll of a character you like, just make sure it's a character you can live with. Or get one good base doll who likes to switch wigs and clothes a lot.

    2. I actually have a few dolls based on characters from books, films or games. I have Cato and Clove from The Hunger Games books/movies and Max and Chloe from the game Life is Strange. They are not displaying as the characters, they are actually intended to be those characters. I love when people do this. The creativity they put into modelling someone after a character and trying to make them look right, is so much fun. Of course I love dolls that are just dolls or OCs too, I have a lot of those, but I do enjoy looking at dolls intended to be a certain character too. XD

I have many more planned as well, some day anyway. More from THG, Glimmer and Marvel, InuYasha and Sesshoumaru from InuYasha, Rose and Dimitri from Vampire Academy and more. I maybe addicted actually, whoops! lol

    3. tbh... i'd love to own a doll slightly modelled on Scotty Griffn (bass/guit) simply bc he looks like what any male should (imho :P) But I'd not like to get him super-realistic... I think Iple Jessica on a male body would be just perfect :) A striking similarity would creep me out (I generally dislike those ultra-realistic dolls) but a Jessica boy would be just fine.

But... what keeps me away from it is the fact that I'm a responsible, serious adult and not a teen fangirl. So yeah... that's my opinion, basically. I mean, everything's alright... it just depends on how old we are.

Plus, I guess book characters are a different thing though:) I mean, they're not real ppl, so it's not fangirling, yes? If so, then I'd love to get myself a doll modelled on the Creature by M.Shelley as she actually described him/it in the book. Quite similar actually to what they made Goss look like in the Hallmark adaptation :) Just not as manly and more ghost-like (so semi-transparent resin and paler eyes?)

    4. *eyebrow raise* So...people who have fan dolls based off real people (or fan dolls in general) aren't "responsible, serious adults"?

    5. I see nothing wrong with it. I mean, we're all over here playing with dolls. Judging someone for dressing theirs up like their favorite character is frankly just silly.
Also, I want to make one of my dolls into Jareth from Labyrinth too. DollyKim, your sister is ace in my book!!!

    6. I think they are cute but sometimes it can be a little hard to see the similarity in some of them. My new doll is going to be inspired by some jpop idols but not exactly like them

    7. @Tez... to cut the long story short *imo* - yes ;) We're asked here to express our opinions and I just stated mine - while some people think it's alright, I disagree and I'm allowed to, I guess;) I think it's just imamture to own a doll modelled on a celeb, real-life person. Book/games/film characters are a different thing - they're fake but their personality is usually rather developed and there's something truly mesmerising about them. Plus, we - as fans/readers/viewers/etc can definitely say we know them. With celebs - do we really know them? Interviews in glossy mags aren't all and having a doll made out of a celeb - to me - bespeaks of one's immature infatuation with the person's looks rather than anything. Plus, making them into dolls is to me equal to a crush-like fascination which generally appear exclusively among kids and teens. Also - if I were a celeb/famous person i'd hate having people make dolls out of me. Just that.

Oh, this reminds me - when I was 18 or so, I played with my friend's daughter - she had a Barbie'd-Hannah Montana. She was a kid, HM was a fictional character (mind you - marketed at kids), so I think it's fine. But if she were 30+ and having a doll made e.g. out of a handsome actor/siger or sth... I'd just think she *misses* something in her life.

ps. sorry for putting stuff into box - one may have such dolls and be still responsible - right. But I'm quite unsure about their being serious ;)

    8. I don't really see how you could come up with the idea that having a doll based on your favorite celeb or musician etc.. means you are immature or irresponsible. That is pre judging someone. You can buy figures of celebs and musicians so why not have a doll as well? I have several character dolls (two being minimee sculpts of the celebs that played them) and I see it as no more immature than having any other doll. What I find really immature and judgmental is to make assumptions on what a person is like just by what kind of doll they have.
You say that having a crush/fascination is almost exclusively for teenagers which is so wrong it's laughable. Trust me you can have a crush on someone at any age. You also say having a celeb doll is an ïmmature infatuation with a persons looks" but then you yourself admit to liking the idea of having a doll of a musician you think "looks like any male should".
Who is the immature one here?

    9. Being hung up on what age you should stop enjoying something is a sign of immaturity. :daisy

    10. Quite so. Also, where is it written that being a serious, responsible adult and being a fangirl (or fanBOY, we do have quite a few male members here on DoA) are two mutually exclusive things? ;)

    11. LOL LOL LOL on the idea that only teenagers fangirl over celebs. So not true. But by all means try telling me I'm immature. I guess that's about the same as saying I'm young for my age which is rather a compliment.
I get annoyed BTW when certain people start in on cosplay or minimees or in fact any tribute doll (or costume) somehow being unoriginal or even unethical. Bollocks to them. Not true at all. If that's not your cup of tea fine but don't go attempting to take the moral high ground cause it will just collapse under you.

    12. Precisely. And age is just an irrelevant number, anyway. We're already (largely) all adults here enjoying something that much of society says we should have put away before our ages reached double-digit numbers; how ridiculous is it to suggest that someone who's not enjoying the hobby the way one person deems appropriate is therefore "immature" and "childish." Get over it.

And as for "celebrity crushes" being only for "teenage girls," I remember my mother grabbing me from college and driving us two hours to go see a film one afternoon just because it starred her lifelong "celebrity crush." And she certainly was no "teenage girl" at the time! Leaving behind what we enjoy simply because of a number on a piece of ID doesn't make anyone happy in the long run, and definitely should not be encouraged in a place like this.

    13. Much better be passionate about something and vibrate for it than repressing ourselves because wouldn't be proper for our age. Most of us here are adults like was told and there always things that will make us fangirl/fanboy about it, this is no way limited by age. It can be a celebrity, it can be a character, animation or a doll. It does not matter, is all the same. Just have fun and enjoy yourself.

Celebrities doll and I find out characters made by others are not my cup of tea on BJDs, I prefer to build from scratch since I like to write the stories and being a person or character I would be always thinking how they really are. So I would get stuck. But I think some people do beautiful works with it and is really fun to see what people come up with. You can see how someone really love what they are doing and that is what matters.

    14. When I originally found out about BJD's, so like...a week ago, lol, I thought it'd be a great way to bring some of my favorite anime characters to "life." But after researching a bit more and seeing people with their own characters, I decided that I didn't want to do that. HOWEVER, I do intend on customizing one of my dolls to look like a character I like (read: similar face) but giving him his own name, backstory, style of dress, etc.

I also introduced one of my friends to the hobby and she's definitely wanting to customize based off of her favorite anime as well. I think it's awesome either way!

    15. I love character dolls. I have plans for Sherlock dolls, both in the show universe and some fandom characters I love from Tumblr. I don't want dolls sculpted to look like Benedict Cumberbatch or Martin Freeman, I want to interpret the character, not clone the actor. I have a doll who has a winky face and a hand with V fingers, and while her usual look will be ordinary school girl, she cosplays as Sailor V! The more I think about this, the more characters I want to shell!

    16. Have some on the way, like 'em, like other people's interpretations as well, am a grown-up dude with dolls, pretty much have no room to judge, have fun and do what makes you happy, somebody somewhere is going to have something to say about it no matter what, etc.

My media-based dolls tend to be pretty loose interpretations of canon in some (... a lot of. ...most) ways but they're definitely not original characters by any stretch. I always thought it was a cool tribute to the characters. Sometimes official dolls and figures cost so much on the secondary market (I'm looking at you, Medicom Real Action Heroes) that having a doll I customized myself that's three times as big and way more versatile is almost more cost-effective, if such a term should even be on the same page as a discussion about BJDs.

    17. I think it's really cool when people can turn a sculpt into a recognizable character. I think it takes a lot of skill to make the faceup just right, as well as making the costume.

    18. I would love to have a doll of my favorite singer. Not anyone else, but him because I really like his facial features. And I think a mini-me wouldn't be too bad either. I don't really have a story for my doll and just want to use her as sort of a "friend" and just play with her. I'm not too into making backstories and such yet. This may change in the future though.

    19. I think dolls based of people and characters are really cool. I love seeing how close you can get to make the doll look like the character and the interpretation on the outfits (especially if there's only a few pictures of said character).

So far all of my dolls are my characters buy I plan on making one of them cosplay as a few of my favorite anime characters. I also plan on buying a doll to be a video game character that I really like.

    20. I personally don't find the appeal of it, I can understand basing a doll off of someone (thier look, hair, etc.) But I don't really like the dolls who look exactly like characters, for me it takes away from the doll owners ability to be creative with it.
