1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Your opinion on dolls who are made into celebrities or fandom characters

Feb 17, 2013

    1. To put my two cents in, I think having a natural, unmodded sculpt that looks similar to a person or character and basing them on such is totally fine. I too have a doll I have based on a youtuber. And yes, fandoms can change and I know me personally, I can change fandoms like the wind and probably will regret my decison down the road. But I could also not because since the doll is only made to look like the person in style (ie: hair color, eyes, etc) I could always change those things on the doll and give him a whole new personality as opposed to getting a doll specifically created made to look like someone (I think of it as a sort of loophole). I'm not knocking anyone that takes it that far because I think it all depends how much one loves (or think they love) a fandom. I'm just saying that as a person who has a doll made up to look like a real person and plan on having more (more youtubers), I see nothing wrong with it but there is a limit to how far i'm willing to go in the likeness just incase I need that loophole I mentioned earlier.

    2. Even w/MiniMees you have that loophole - I've gotten 2 minimee heads w/no intentions of making them into the characters they are supposed to be, because minimees tend to look older than regular BJDs & I wanted to shell mature looking (40s +) characters :D I also have 4 dolls who obviously were sculpted w/certain KPop/KDrama celebrities in mind - and none of them are supposed to BE the stars they were inspired by. I'm incorporating their resemblance to these stars into the story, because we all know people who look like various celebrities LOL

I am always fascinated by people who seem to think that once they dress their doll in a certain way, it's set in stone. Good grief! The wigs come off, the eyes come out, the costumes can change - even w/o redoing the face-up! The big problem I run into, with my crew of cosplayers, is the distinctive facial markings. With real live cosplayers, that's a matter of doing your makeup then washing your face - but w/the dolls I'd have to get a new faceup every time they do another cosplay (if I did my OWN faceups that might be easier...) I've experimented with plastic film a little...
But most cosplays just require a change of wig & dress. Easy peasy.

    3. That last bit is so true :whee:

    4. I personally don't care for dolls that are sculpted on purpose to look like specific people (e.g. minimee dolls made to look like celebrities, etc.) I probably wouldn't own one.

As for dolls customized to look like certain characters, I'm not a fan of that either, generally speaking. I don't have any "character dolls" and probably won't have any. I'm not against it, and I think people can go ahead and do whatever they want with their own dolls. I don't mind looking at them. Character dolls just aren't a concept I buy into myself.

    5. In my personal opinion it is a bit strange, but if it makes someone happy, who am I to judge? :thumbup

    6. I used to be dead set against it, and to be honest, I really didn't like it. But you know what? I changed my mind. I've seen such wonderful, creative things done with Minimees and fanart dolls that I honestly can't oppose it on grounds of "originality". Because you know what? OCs can suffer from lack of originality too! (I'm talking about myself here. Say hi to Silfe, my pretty gay elf bishounen with white hair...).

    7. I love seeing dolls that are customized to look like fandom characters! Volks Dollfie Dreams especially.

    8. Dolls sculpted to look like specific people really aren't my thing, for whatever reason. Probably because they never perfectly capture the person, in my eyes. But I like seeing other people's fandom dolls! For myself I like to have the freedom of a doll or character being completely mine, so the fact that I can't go the fandom route myself makes seeing other people's fandom dolls more fun for me. :)

    9. I have few in my crew... and I am always glad to see some dolls like that around. :) There's not much I can do with them tho (I mean character development, stories etc) so... sometimes they are only based on the character or real human and I extend their character tho..

    10. Well...I guess my opinion is that humans have been doing this for a very long time as a practice anyway - making figures in the likeness of others. I think it's just something that we humans do and like for various reasons. Go into any souvenir shop, or consider action figures that are designed to look like real people or specific character; there's a huge following for this. If there weren't I doubt there's be so many Marilyn Monroe dolls/figures out there for example. Anyway, I think the only difference between that and our hobby, is that we're more involved with the creation aspect rather than buying something already conceived. Personally I like the fact that we have the option to do whatever we want with our dolls.

    11. character dolls and dolls made to look like existing people do not interest me in the least. Honestly, I don't even look at them. I am more interested in seeing more original work done with these dolls.

But hey, to each their own.

    12. The heads sculpted to look like a certain actor/actress/singer really creep me out. To me, doing that crosses a line that shouldn't be crossed. But anime/manga/video game dolls? Eh, they don't interest me at all. I'm not really into the whole 'fandom' thing.
