Your opinion on dolls who are made into celebrities or fandom characters

Feb 17, 2013

    1. Pft a photostory of them all just being like "wtffff..." XD
      I'm not a fan of Homestuck myself but I've seen some pretty well done dolls out thereeee. C;

    2. That's interesting! I have never seen one of those before~
And I bet XD Things like that are always amusing.

    3. I love seeing fandom-based dolls. I just ordered the body for my first doll, who's gonna be Jack Frost!

    4. You may like this thread, since it covers a lot of opinions on the subject. This topic has come up multiple times.

That said -- fandom dolls are my 'thing'. I have a handful of OC dolls, but for the most part it's fandom dolls that I have and want. For some reason that's the part of the hobby that excites me most -- the prospect of having giant poseable action figures of my favorite characters. The challenge of finding the right mold for the right character and getting all the details right is so much fun it's ridiculous. It's not to everyone's tastes, I know, but it certainly appeals to mine.

    5. Oh thank you for the link!

Ahh yes, that does sound exciting. I suppose when you adore a character so much it really would be nice to have an embodiment of them that you customized and chose out yourself!
Thank you for the input! ~

    6. I haven't seen a Jack Frost doll yet! That'll be interesting!
Good luck with your character design~ <3

    7. Well, the mod-ability of bjds totally lends itself re-creating people and characters. I'd be sad if people didn't go ahead and create dolls that were perfect for what they wanted--whether an original character or a celeb or whatever. I've seen some amazing re-creations! It's truly an impressive thing, I think!

Personally, I haven't bothered to do this (re-creating characters). It's just too much work! :D

Copyright/Trademark-wise, if it's for personal use and a one-off, this is usually just fine. I'm sensitive about copyright issues, but re-creating characters that don't damage someone's trademark or make money off someone else's designs is OK. And, as I said, the work and creativity (yes, it does involved a lot of that) and skill put into re-creating characters is just wonderful to see.

    8. I agree with you about the trademark/copyright issue, there seems to be a fine line sometimes!
And also with the too much work point CX That's me too. If I'm gunna put effort into something it's gunna be my own design!

Thank you for your well thought out input~

    9. I was able to purchase a Johnny Depp Minimee 1/3 head and I love it. I placed it on an Impledoll body and it works just fine.
I also have a 1/4 Johnny Depp head on a Dollzone boy body. He has a face up but it needs redone. So I will be the one to do it.
I had done my 1/3 head myself and it turned out great.[IMG] I have it over a photo of Johnny because when I did this face up I did not have his eyes or lashes yet.

    10. WOW that's incredible! Looks exactly like him!
Thank you so much for sharing, you've obviously put a lot of effort into your dolls!

    11. I have two character dolls and the rest are OC. I love my two "celebrities" as much as the others...Charlie a little more than the others! It's all fun!

    12. And that's what a hobby's all about right? Having fun!
      Thank you for the input!

    13. I'm kind of "meh" on celebrity lookalike dolls. It's not something I would do myself, and I personally don't see the appeal of them. But, I don't really care if other people do them. There are quite a few dolls out there that really DO look like the resin versions of actual celebrities. It would almost be creepy if it wasn't amusing.

    14. I do agree that sometimes when I see a resin version I get a little creeped out, depending on the sculpt XD
Sometimes it's weird! Sometimes it's creative!
But I've always personally preferred OC's to fandom in any aspect.~

    15. After I do traditional costumes, I have it in mind to make character dolls of the book characters I enjoy, mostly to show how I see them when I read their stories. Jewel Markess ATerafin from Margaret West's books, for instance, because she changes ages through the books and life situations so I'd have a wealth of material to choose from for costuming/etc.

    16. I like certain ones to be honest. I like it when they are based off a character the actor played... i.e. the supernatural dolls and jack sparrow... i'm not sure I would want one baded off the actor themselves though. I keep thinking I want to make a Charmed set (Prue, Piper, and Phoebe), but I'm not that skilled.

    17. That's what I'm planning eventually, making book characters. I like how they're more open to interpretation than movie/tv characters, since they're not actors.

    18. I have character dolls, have owned quite a few in the past as well, and I now have a celebrity minimee, so of course I enjoy them. I also cosplay and write fanfiction. I really, really enjoy the challenge of matching my image and interpretation of the characters to the finished doll. It takes a lot of work and ingenuity to make it happen a lot of the time, just as much as making any other sort of doll. People often look down their noses at fan creations, but really, "originality" is an incredibly recent concept when applied to the arts. A lot of our greatest works in art and literature are essentially fanart/fanfiction.

    19. Gali: Wow that's really interesting! I like also how you work around the costumes as well, that's the first time I really heard of someone mentioning the outfits~

mlefever: Ohhhh~ Charmed would be interesting! Don't downsize your skill if you really want to do something go for it C; Thank you for your input!

Funkyflower24: Book characters do leave a lot more creative freedom yes~ Allows more personal touch to be put in for sure! Thank you!

Kim: Yes there is no limit on creativity and fandolls are no exception! It's cool how you write fanfiction as well! ~ Thank you!

    20. I got two celebrity Minimee heads: one Zachary Quinto and one Tom Hiddleston. However, they're not Zachary Quinto and Tom Hiddleston. The Zachary Quinto head is actually a Spock-head. I saw it on the marketplace here on DoA and I just KNEW it was the right sculpt for Tharesion (aka the Ice King, one of my original characters). It was exactly right and the face-up artist I sent the head to also opened the eyes to give him the perfect arrogant look I wanted for that head. Add ice-blue eyes and carrot-red hair and you got Tharesion!

Tom's just - Tom, for the time being. But I plan to turn him into Aelfric, yet another original character of mine from yet another story. It's just that I had Tom Hiddleston (or rather, his Loki) in mind when I wrote Aelfric and thus, that's what he looks like. Kinda like Loki but different in some details. (I was writing an AU Avengers-fanfic and suddenly, realized that the guy looking over my shoulder while I was doing so looked a lot like Loki but wasn't actually Loki. Turned out his name was Aelfric and I was really writing his story, not Loki's.)

See, when I write, I like to be able to picture the character in my mind. So I look for pics that fit. Or else, I got a certain character, played by a certain actor, in mind already and base my own character on that one. Those guys are actors. I can't get them to actually come to my flat and dress up as my characters. Next best thing is to get a doll(-head) that looks like them and dress it up as my character. ;)
