1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Your opinion on dolls who are made into celebrities or fandom characters

Feb 17, 2013

    1. Wow that's really cool!
I know what you mean when you get a certain actor/tress in your head as your OC's look, and then even better if you find a sculpt!
Thank you for the awesome input~!!

    2. I actually got into this hobby because I was looking to make character dolls :) So I, obviously, have no problem with it! I do have more OC dolls than character dolls as of right now, but I LOVE my character dolls and actually find it much more creatively challenging to work with them than my OC's.

Also, I have switched up my character dolls from time to time-the minimee Death Note L I had gotten years ago is currently 'cosplaying' Sebastian from Kuroshitsuji. I think that's one of the beauties of this hobby-even character specific dolls have the potential to be something else entirely.

    3. I guess for me, I would'nt have a doll that was just one specific character all the time. (OC's of mine are a different matter)
I would'nt mind having a doll who looked similar to an actor, but it probably wouldn't be the actor specifically.
It is cool seeing people who do this though, and put tons of thought and detail into it. That's just really neat. :3

    4. I don't think I would do it, but I will admit that I have seen some badass Sherlock dolls BD

    5. I find it really interesting if it's right props and costumes. It's hard to get it right and makes it really amazing in my opinion. I haven't made a fandom character myself, but I do have the idea of making one. It's really hard to find a fitting sculpt for him tho, so I'll wait and see if the sculpt ever shows up or if it always will be a dream of mine. :)

    6. I am sure everyone has favorite actors/actresses. I have not seen any head sculpts that carries likeness of famous people in BJD. Maybe licensing issues...I see them in 1/6 scale action figures, though. Has any of you wished head sculpts that look like your favorite actors/actresses to go with your existing doll bodies?

    7. You can order Minimees from DIM to look like a celebrity, cartoon character, or person you know. There are lots of famous-actor heads here on DOA, and are often painted/styled to look like one of that celebrity's best-known characters... but not always. So sometimes you might be surprised to recognize Orlando Bloom or David Bowie or Angelina Jolie or Johnny Depp in street-clothes with a preppy haircut. ^^

I myself do not have or want any Minimees of people I know/admire, but I do enjoy seeing what others do with their idols.

    8. I actually would prefer to have dolls that are my own characters instead of celebrities. Also, I was never the one to have pictures of idols on my wall, even when I was a teenager. I guess I just don't fit the profile, even for dolls.

    9. I don't actually think DiM is doing the Minimees anymore; I want to say Nobility Doll and Angelsdoll do them now but I could be totally wrong. I've never ordered nor purchased one so I could be mistaken. Souldoll did a couple of licensed sculpts of Korean actors, though.

Otherwise, yeah, what Jenny said. There are lots of celebrity sculpts floating around and you can get near anyone you want sculpted for you provided you're willing to pay for it. It ain't cheap. I don't own any Minimees, nor do I wish to, but they're definitely out there.

    10. Hey, thanks for the info. I did research bit on mentioned companies but I did not find anything that was recognizable. MiniMee doesn't look aesthetically good in my opinion. Where can I see those famous-actor heads here? I tried "search" but came up nothing....I am sort of gathering info on the subject so that I can possibly sculpt one. Any help would be appreciated.

    11. i've seen a couple of sculpts around that resemble famous celebrities
      ex:
      saint from dollshe- heath ledger
      stella from iplehouse- megan fox

there are more, but those are the ones that come to mind right now...

    12. It looks like there's a variety of Minimee sources nowadays:

      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?108-Marketplace-Custom-Manufacturing

Browse through there, the threads are all split up by character & source. Fascinating variety of celebrities/characters up in there.
ETA: Oh wait, you don't have Marketplace access yet - sorry. But when you do, it's the Custom Manufacturing section.

There's probably also Minimee (also try searching on "MNM") Discussion threads, Gallery threads, and Photo Requests/Databases, where you could connect with experienced owners who'd give you the best info about designing & ordering.

    13. Thanks for the replies, ladies. I looked at those dolls mentioned. They don't have dead-on likeness but I see the resemblance. I guess, it is up to how you face them up. No I don't have the access to Market place. I am new to this forum as well as the whole world of BJD... I will look through the threads you mentioned, Jenny. You are very kind.

    14. There are quite a few Japanese actors that I would like to see as my future dolls. I haven't looked to see if any have been made, but I really don't see a NEED to make them look that way either.

    15. I'd love to see Cillian Murphy as a doll~ He's just so gorgeous!

    16. I agree Jem! He is wonderful. I feel Iplehouse makes really realistic molds and a lot of them look like celebrities. I swear their new Aaliyah is Beyonce. Plus they are not rough looking like MNMs IMO. I have had minimees and I really do not like them, but that is probably because I prefer the more big out of proportion features.
But I would love to see Iplehouse do their version of Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead. He is such a manly man.

    17. Iplehouse's Zera is basically a Shin Min Ah minimee (go compare the images - Min Ah even did a famous CF w/that red beret some years back). I can only WISH I'd been able to get a Souldoll Lee Jun Ki :( Elfdoll's Rainy Rita looks exactly like Lee Ha Na. Others mentioned the new Iplehouse girl looking like Beyonce. So w/a bit of looking you can find some celebrities in resin w/o going the Minimee route. Usually KOREAN celebrities (Korean dolls ya know) but that Hallyu wave's breaking hard over the West Coast & heading east...

Editing for a plea to Korean companies - let's see Rain & Kim Hyun Joon immortalized in resin.

    18. Noted. I might work on a head carries likeness of him. Thanks for the input.

    19. Most of my dolls are fanart of characters from various fandoms, so I guess it's clear where I stand on the issue.

    20. The majority of my dolls are based on characters from books, however most people here probably haven't read the books, so they probably wouldn't guess. I don't see how it's any different than writing fanfiction, or creating fanart. It's an artistic expression, and we are all free to create our dolls however we wish. :)
