Your opinion on dolls who are made into celebrities or fandom characters

Feb 17, 2013

    1. None of my dolls are fandom/famous people because I am just incapable of accepting my own dolls as being a character doll that isn't 100% perfect :sweat I'd agonise over every tiny detail and hide the doll away until I felt it was perfect :( There are a bunch I'd love to do but I don't trust myself to get them right!

I loooooove seeing other people's character dolls though! Accuracy never bothers me in the least with other people's dolls so I love to get the enjoyment from characters dolls that way instead of trying to do it myself :) I think it's wonderful that so many people put in so much effort to get their dolls looking like popular characters and I love seeing them on the forum and in person!

    2. The brunt of my dolls are actually character dolls, oops.

I'm a giant weirdo who likes obscure actors and extremely unpopular characters - so when I wanted a head to carry the likeness of a super distinct looking actor [David Warner, herp] I went the highroad and commissioned a friend of mine who sculpts to work some of their crazy miracles - and here's the result.

And for those distinct characters I don't like enough to drop 394893485 dollars on getting a custom head of, I make due with what I have - e.g. I'm using a Soom Dia to portray Cillian Murphy's character in Tron Legacy. [Mr. Murphy seems to be a popular guy, haha.]

    3. Well I have a LJK that if I decide to keep him, I want to make him into an existing character. I don't really have a problem with character dolls because you can be just as creative making them as you can an original character.

    4. The David Warner head is so obscure that I love it. Thanks for sharing, PegasusxCroquet. I like old actors. Thought about making young Marlon Brando one point. I am gonna gear up to sculpt Cillian Murphy head.

    5. For my first doll, I considered making a Van Fanel doll from the Escaflowne anime series. He is probably one of my most favorite anime characters. I eventually decided to make one of my OCs as my first doll instead. It's much easier to see tv/movie characters being made into dolls instead of actual real celebrities, at least for me anyway. Though if someone wants an Angelina Jolie doll bad enough, why not? It's just not for me.

    6. Hey, to each their own. :sweat

    7. I have no problem with it. If people want dolls based on characters or real life people, I'm all for it! In fact I love it. I find great enjoyment looking at a doll made like someone's original character, it fascinates me. But I find just as much joy from looking at dolls people have turned into a character or based on a real person and seeing how they translate that person/character into doll form. Currently all my dolls are OC's and though when I first got into dolls I'd planned on making characters from Kingdom Hearts into dolls, I never got around to it and presumed I'd just get my OC's and that would be it.

That changed however within the last year and I'm currently waiting on my first doll based on someone who isn't one of my characters. She is based on the look of Isabelle Furhman portraying Clove in the Hunger Games, but the doll is based firmly on Clove and not actually on Isabelle. I personally don't feel like I want to own a doll based on a real person as such, but the character they play in a movie or book whatever? Then yes I'm planning to do just that again and get a doll based on Cato as played by Alexander Ludwig in the movie of THG. I think it's entirely up to the doll owner what and whom they choose to style their doll as. If they want a doll based on a fandom or a real person, celebrity or no, it's entirely their choice. We shouldn't have a say in THEIR choices. We can feel uncomfortable about it, not like it or whatever, but it's definitely their choice to have fun with their dolls as they see fit. I think it's fine and totally fun, so yeah again, I say it's all good. XD

    8. I love character dolls! People put so much detail into character dolls,it always amazes me. I don't have any dolls based on famous characters myself though.

    9. I actually want to do this. I think of it a having more realistic action figure so I could definitely see myself getting one.

    10. The only celebrity BJD's I really covet are the ones I've seen of David Bowie as Jareth and the Orlando Bloom Legolas heads. I've sort of half been keeping my eye on the Methos minime thread because the idea of a Methos doll really, really does appeal but unless there's a lot of people involved in that one I doubt I'd be able to afford a Methos head.

    11. I would not want a doll that is supposed to mirror a celebrity...
Specific existing characters can be interesting, but when the doll looks too much like a celebrity, I lose interest... So, it is certainly not for me.

    12. I'm in the process of constructing one, actually (with plans for a couple more). I actually find it a whole different challenge from doing my OCs as dolls or from doing the non-character based dolls. I'm really enjoying the challenge of it, and it's all characters I do really love (and who fit together), so I don't really view doing this as anything particularly different from drawing fanart or writing fanfic--it's something I'm doing out of my enjoyment of the characters, and I feel that's a similar reasoning for anyone else doing the same thing. (And I do really love seeing the ones that have had so much loving work put into them!)

    13. I personally don't think I'd ever have a character or celebrity for a doll, but I can see having a doll be based off of them. I like the fashion sense of some celebrities or the color themes of certain characters so I can see myself doing that. But hey, if someone wants a doll that is a specific celebrity or character, that's totally okay! Whatever makes you happy. :)

    14. I am "guilty" of trying to do this! In 2007 I got a doll who was meant to look like a celebrity, custom face-up and all. But as I lost interest in the celebrity, the doll changed. New face-up, individualized ward-robe, etc. I love him more now as his own character than when he was trying to be someone else.

That said, I really think - It's your doll, do what your heart says! People come up with really cool ways of paying homage to a person or character they admire, and if the vehicle they choose is a doll, so be it.

    15. I'm not interested in buying any dolls that look like real people, but I have a doll that represents a character from my favorite musical. My one girl, Anhura, is meant to look like Anhura from Razia's Shadow. My one boy, Xander, is getting an Ouran High cosplay. I'm considering getting cosplays for some of my others as well. I don't really mind fan dolls. I have trouble forming stories/characters for my dolls anyway, so it doesn't make them mean any less to me when a doll has a pre-formed character.

    16. I haven't seen these dolls, but I would LOVE to. What a creative and fun idea! Why not make a replica of your favorite star? I would love to make some dolls off of some famous horror movie villains, and in a round-a-bout way, Ringdoll has come close to this with the Dark Side series with the chainsaw and hockey mask killers. I see nothing wrong with it and if it makes you happy then more power to you. Go for it! :)

    17. Having dolls look like celebrities or characters isn't for me. I won't actively look for them and I know I won't ever personally own one. My thoughts probably stem from my inability to see sculpts as real people or fandom characters. They look far too different to me. :sweat Plus I don't really know celebrities. But if I see characters I know, there is a bit of excitement just from recognizing them!

    18. I love movies, tend to go into fangirl mode and have the action figures to prove it :) May I add that I have to life size mannequins at home (dressed in original costumes from a TV series)?
So, yeah, I'd love to have some of my favourite characters as BJDs at home. Currently I have two Minimee heads at home, which I love for their realism, though they're not goinng to represent the people they are supposed to be. I have a Tilda Swinton head which I got with a wonderful realistic face-up that makes her look nothing like Tilda but her own very real person. The other is a The Monkees Davy Jones head, which I intend to mod into another actor, Lee Pace, I'm not sure which character to choose for him though. I intended The Fall's Black Bandit, but that was before The Hobbit's Thranduil. And I'm keeping my eyes on getting a Mads Mikkelsen head for my very own Tristan from King Arthur.

Okay, desperately trying to get out of fangirl mode now.

    19. What people do with their money is their business, imo.

Personally, SOMETIMES I can think about getting dolls to turn into some actors/TV Show characters (All the main ones from Spartacus actually), but I think I'll never ever do that for real. When I love a character/actor, I always go for his/her appearence or personality and try to create my own character from his/her basis. It's the way I found to have them with me and still creating over it.

Although I prefer create over, I know there is a great sensation about having in your hands a version of you favorite actor/singer/movie character and... well, the nicest thing aboud BJD is that, if you get tired of something, you can resell or just clean it up and start again, so I don't think it's a waist of money. I like seeing good BJD versions of famous people/fandom characters around, specially when I'm involved with the fandom too! :)

    20. Ok so I know I already replied to this, but Vicemage just totally hit the nail on the head with this. This is totally the way I feel too. It's my way of expressing my love for the characters. And seeing how I do adore fanart and fanfics, I don't see it as any different from that. Just quoting this because it totally goes along with what I already said. *nods*
