Your opinion on dolls who are made into celebrities or fandom characters

Feb 17, 2013

    1. I don't have anything against them but I wouldn't make one. One of my favorite parts about BJD's is that you can create their own character/back story and make them unique. I would rather have a doll with a one of a kind personality :).

    2. Like many have said, I'm also not interested in modeling my doll on a real person. But I think the questions mixes things since celebrities are real while characters are not. I understand developing a character from an anime or other source material to create your own version. Basing a doll on a celebrity I would have no insight into but people should play off of whatever works for them. From overexposure on the internet, newsstands and other people the thought of celebrities generally makes me nauseous.

    3. oh wow what a neat idea I would totally do somthing like this. I think its quite a unique way of expressing your love for that charater of whatever fandom they replicate there doll into

    4. I don't like this. I only want my dolls to represent my original characters. I don't understand making a doll into an existing character. But, I know that some people really enjoy it. It's just not for me.

    5. I flit thru celebrity crushes and fandoms so I don't really think I would invest the time and money into making a doll based on one.

    6. I think it's a neat way to pay homage to someone/something that one finds inspiring. I've seen some dolls that are celebrities or fandom characters, and the amount of work and artistry that goes into getting their look and 'attitude' right is amazing.

Personally, I don't think I could connect with a doll of my own that was a straight-out representation of a real person. I have two dolls that are heavily inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's stories, but neither of them is strictly any one of Poe's characters. I also see nothing wrong with having my dolls cosplay a popular (or obscure) character temporarily.

    7. I've always preferred OC dolls to 'Fan' dolls, personally. Not that I don't admire fan dolls, or the amount of work/money that the owner puts into them, but I personally wouldn't want one. I could see having my doll occasionally cosplay as a character from my favorite series, or something (particularly if I was going to a con), but I'd never keep it that way forever. Each of my dolls has a specific personality and history made up by me, and thats the way I like it, haha!

    8. I'm fond of them! I like seeing how people go about doing this, particularly when it comes to existing molds. (I am a bit shaky when it comes to MNMs however, as they can wander into the uncanny valley, but if they make people happy...? Awesome!)

I've had a couple of fandom dolls and they were really fun! Of course they sometimes deviate--one of them still has the same character I gave it but is a redhead now (go figure) but the other deviated completely and is now not that character anymore. This isn't really a problem to me. If a character doesn't stick, it doesn't stick, nothing to get frustrated about. I feel that it's smart to go in accepting that characters might not stick if you do attempt a character doll, though, just so you're not disappointed or panicky when things don't seem right.

    9. Definitely original dolls for me. I would have my dolls cosplay but I also couldn't commit to a single celebrity or character from a fandom. I like to change things up too much.

    10. I think it's fun and cute. If you've given your doll a backstory or imagine what the doll's personality is, then it's cool to have the doll cosplay their fandom. That is awesome in my opinion. One of my two girls is a little more fearless and kick-ass so I could see her wanting to dress up like Indiana Jones. My other girl is sweet and shy, so I could see her dressing up like Fluttershy or Snow White. If you just want an Angelina Jolie doll, well that's up to you and you enjoy :)

    11. I think it's really cool seeing other owners make fan dolls but I like to try making my own characters however simple/Mary Sue they seem to be ^_^; If I were to try making one, I think once I completed it, it would just be put on the shelf to look at. :sweat So I feel it's kind of limiting to me.

    12. Totally guilty of loving them loll but I dont make them into people like actors more like book characters for me ^_^ but to each their own

    13. I think it's great! I don't know about actors/celebs but I think characters from books/movies/comics etc would be fun to make as well as original dolls :)

    14. I love the idea of fandom dolls from books/movies/tv shows/comics. I think it can take a lot of creativity to put that into a doll, and definitely shows the owners passion, which is always great to see in any hobby :)

    15. I can see why someone would want to do that, and I have considered customizing a doll based off my favourite drummer. It does seem a little weird I guess, but how different is it to go to Walmart and buy a Barbie dressed as some random actor? I do love character dolls, though, no issues there.

    16. I think they're way cool! When I first got into drawing I used to base my characters off certain celebrities and the people they played in cinema. But now with dolls, I can take it a step further. I really like seeing more dramatic takes on them as dolls though. Like if someone got an Uma Thurman doll, I wouldn't want to see her dressed up in street clothes, I wanna see her as she was as Poison Ivy! Or Beatrix Kiddo! So yeah I like them alot, though when owned by someone, to me, they take on a different personality. One of my favorite doll seamstresses on here has a doll of one of my favorite celebrities and she is every bit as precious, but different from the real woman. I love them both.

    17. I love seeing dolls who represent real characters or people!
However, it isn't for my personal collection. I feel it takes away from artistic aspect of collecting and I think I would become bored very quickly with doll...

    18. It's not a bad idea. What's the harm? Normally I wouldn't make one myself but I'm kind of wanting to make a doll based off a video game character.

    19. I love seeing fandom dolls :] I think it is a neat way of showing what you love.

    20. I love the challenge of making a doll into a 'character', it's cosplay for dolls to me. I chose my dolls to be able to 'become' a number of anime/manga characters, and it's the whole reason I got into BJD owning. I think to quite of lot of BJD owners, their doll is a 'fandom character'. It can be a very small personal fandom or a very large well known fandom. ^_^ And some dolls become celebrities in their own right because they are so well done up and photographed and are well known in the fandom.
