Your opinion on dolls who are made into celebrities or fandom characters

Feb 17, 2013

    1. As a otaku who has a unhealthy obsession with a certain anime character, this is why I ended up creating Hizuru.

Other than that, I won't give a problem if someone made a chara into a doll. I think it is handy when there is no merch released for that character (eg figures.). The other reason why I made Hizuru.

    2. to be honest i dont quite understand MLP fans, but I swear, the BJD community's bronies are probably the most tolerable! The MLP-inspired dolls look freaking fantastic!
i could say that of all fandoms though, since it seems BJD owners have that eye for aesthetics that not a lot of others do!

    3. I think its on the person who owns them and who they style them. Admittingly, theres quite a few celebrities which have features I would love done onto a doll.

    4. I think it's fun and enjoy seeing them, but I'll admit I don't know 90 percent of the characters people make dolls of! I'm probably seeing a lot more character dolls than I realize. I also don't think there's anything wrong with celebrity dolls - they're nothing new in the world of dolls, and it's interesting to me to see how people interpret real faces into resin.

    5. I like the concept of having a doll cosplay. I personally would never buy a doll to recreate another character/ celebrity. But I make cosplays for my doll and I've taken them with me to conventions before. I think it's fun, and it gives dolls more of a purpose.

    6. actually i don't understand this desire of having doll, who copied from appearance of celebrities. it's strange for me.
      cosplay is ok.. but minime

    7. I have two minime dolls. I bought them second hand. I intend to make both dolls up to be original characters and not the celebrity. What I like about the minime dolls is that they tend to look very realistic and that is a quality I really appreciate in dolls. It's not about it looking like a celebrity although I must say I am psyched to have a "gackt" doll cause he is a pretty epic personality.

My first one is Shou from Alice nine.

And my second one, which I think bears an uncanny resemblance is Gackt

    8. Have just bought a mnm Hiddleston. I like his face shape and I love Loki as a character and decided it would be fun to make up a bjd of him. This is the first time making a character that is not completely mine. I think it will be fun to see how he turns out:)

    9. The really interesting thing I saw done with a MNM Tom Hiddleston head was a Loki-- NOT Marvel's Loki, but Norse Myth Loki, with the red hair and fire and more historical-looking costuming. Saw a beautiful photoset, just... wowed me.

I'm still waiting to see if any WtNV dolls pop up. It would be interesting, since there's not a lot of canonical information on the characters' looks, how differently different people could interpret the same characters. (but hey, I won't complain if I turn out to be the first, either)

    10. The only one I would be interested in would be a David Bowie as Jareth from Labyrinth. Otherwise they just aren't my cup of tea.

    11. I do like them, however I prefer the characters they play. Although some of who the person is does come through into their characters, it's still not as personal as just doing a sculpt of the actual person tho. But to each their own :)

    12. To each their own. I wouldn't want a celebrity doll myself but my first girl is going to be losely based on an anime character from Sword Art Online.

    13. When I first got into the hobby I could see the appeal of a character based doll, but didn't think I'd be able to pull one off myself because I'm too persnickety about the details. And if I ever did have a character doll it would probably end up one of my own characters just Cosplaying because it'd be weird to have a doll I didn't create the character base for and I would be paranoid about making them do anything out of character. That was until Detour came around and I was finally getting my first Dollshe Bernard and the random thought popped into my head that I could dress him as Gilbert Nightray from Pandora Hearts and then he just... Didn't go back to the doll I was planning for him before he was Gilbert... So now he is officially based off Gilbert and I have a fan doll XD
And it took a year or so, but I've finally given in to attempting to create two more fan dolls, but all three are based on sculpts I really love and would keep even if they weren't meant to be based on a certain character. If they ever stop being that specific character I will have fun creating a new character for them, but considering these three characters have been my top favourites since High School and I first discovered them, they wont likely be changing any time soon XD

On the topic of celebrity based dolls, though, I wouldn't want one. I have nothing against people who have them and I've seen some be made to look absolutely fantastic, but I'd rather have a sculpt I can see as being made into several different things without my brain always supplying what the human the sculpt is based off of appearing...

    14. It is very difficult to make a doll look like a real person, especially one that already exists. I love seeing dolls that are based off people its so cool :D

    15. It's not for me, and I've seen only very few that I really liked, but I can see where someone could get enjoyment out of the challenge. Plus it's not my money, so people can do whatever they like with their dolls. :)

    16. I think it's pretty cool how dolls can be customized to resemble celebrities or characters so closely, but it's not personally my cup of tea. It's definitely neat, but I would prefer dolls of my own OCs.

    17. It's not really my thing. I feel like my dolls should be an extension of my own mind, not someone else's.

    18. I've done it. I RP, so those versions of the fandom characters have been in my head for so long they almost feel like my own (and in a way they are a little bit mine, because they deviate quite a bit from their canon selves). I also have dolls of my OCs. I don't feel much difference in emotional attachment between the two, because I didn't make the fandom dolls to be like "Hey everyone, look at my fandom doll! Isn't he so exactly like XX character?!" I made them personalized to my ideas/headcanon for me, myself, and I to enjoy, just like my OC dolls.

    19. I feel similarly about RPing-- some of the characters I RP are canon characters and others are more original (though the ones I RP are fandom OCs), but... I identify with them all very strongly, and while they are not all 'mine', I put a lot of my ideas into them-- especially with one in particular who isn't from a visual medium fandom, so... while there are several popular potential 'what he looks like', mine is different from all those, and so I have a sense of ownership over 'my' version of him.

I'd love to doll-ify all the characters that I RP, canon or OC. Well, that will be a long, lengthy, expensive process, but I'm definitely starting with one who's become very close to my heart and who cheers me up (even when I'm doing awful things to the poor lad) whenever I'm stressed or depressed. Having him in a little huggable body I can hold in my lap is an idea that makes me smile, after all the peace of mind and joy he's given me as a character. I may not have created him, but I write about adventures he could be having and get inside his head, and he makes me really happy.

    20. I'll all for character dolls myself - I have 3 currently, with a possible 4th on the way (gotta make sure he'll work for the character). I'm also in the process of building 2 of the 4 Robins from Batman, have plans for Nightwing, Redhood, Superboy, and Red Robin (I of course want daddy bat but I haven't seen quite the right mold yet). I come from an action figure collecting background and I love the idea of being able to have my favorite characters in a much nicer, easier to love format such as BJDs. If money and space were no object, I'd love to build more DC characters (Young Justice and Green Arrow would be so fun!). I have Claude from Kuroshitsuji and waiting for Alois.

Most of my dolls have their own personality that isn't character based, but I find the character dolls really fun in a different way. The challenge of finding the right mold, body, and clothes for each character is really fun I think. Lol sometimes its frustrating when you can't find the right size doll in relation to others in its set, but its just a matter of time. I'm attached to certain characters because of reading their comics or watching their series for so long - dorkishly, I also RP most of the ones I have designs for ^^;. They are special to me because I've put a little piece of myself into them through RP'ing and they've given me happiness through their adventures both in and out of my head (especially the comic book characters).

Celebrities aren't really my thing aside from the character they play. I have a Tom H./Loki MnM head but he'll never be Tom, just Loki.
