Your opinion on dolls who are made into celebrities or fandom characters

Feb 17, 2013

    1. I have one......just for fun

    2. If you like a design and want to make your doll look like that character, then go ahead. Honestly, I would squeal with fangirl joy should I ever get to see a Death the Kid BJD.

    3. I love Chloe Grace Moretz and Supia's Muriel looks just like her. I thought it would be cool to get her and dress her up as characters from the different movies she's in.

    4. I don't mind dolls that were made to look like a fictional character, because I know how much love one can feel for a character! But I personally don't like dolls that were made to look like real life celebrities. I'm not sure how to explain my feeling, but I guess I could say it feels weird to mix real life things with dolls. I hope that makes sense x_x. Though I don't judge anyone who has a doll like that and I don't mind anyone having one. To each their own, I just have different taste :).

    5. Well, I once thought I would never do this, with a BJD, deliberately make a doll look like and actor or someone else alive, but then I got this idea for a character who's look will be semi-based on an actor I like playing a character in Highlander, a character who in turn was based on a rather famous person and I'm just going with it. The actor is someone who's work I've always liked, and an admitted long term crush. As a portrait photographer I have a bit of a thing for his face. He's got interesting angular facial bones and an overall long, elegant lean look to him. He always looks particularly striking when he does something in period dress (or a high end modern suit) and I've often thought that he would make a terrific doll. I actually saw a Dollmore fashion BJD that looks a lot like a younger version of him, but the jawline is a bit off and in the end I decided I wanted an SD sized doll not an MSD sized one.

There were quite a few heads I looked at. Some would have worked but were a little bit too anime for me. Others had the eyes but had one feature that didn't quite work, usually the nose or the mouth. In the end it came down to two heads. The Dollshe Saint and the Ringdoll Kay. The Saint really had the face shape and the eyes I wanted but the mouth is a bit smaller than I would have liked. The Ringdoll Kay the face shape was workable and the mouth was better but the eyes were just not quite as good as the Saint's. I searched for a couple of months but no Saint head at a price I could afford. So eventually I just decided I could make the Kay head work and I was thisclose to ordering the Kay (and definitely not enjoying the thought of the long wait I'd have) when I finally saw a Saint head in the Marketplace for a really good price and well, I just decided it was fate and I jumped right on it, lol. He's not without issues, my Saint, but I don't mind that. I like a good project doll and the price was right, and I could afford him, so that was the main thing.

When I am done my new doll who I have named Geordie, will look rather like a goth inspired vampire version of this guy playing Highlander's immortal bad boy Lord Byron. He's not supposed to be exactly the same character but HL's Byron and Firth playing him is definitely an inspiration. This is Jonathan Firth (Yes, the younger brother of the infamous Colin...) one of my favorite actors, and um, one of my biggest crushes. (I've actually been crushing on him since a show back in the 90's called Covington Cross...) These are actually pics from the HL episode "Modern Prometheus" and also from Middlemarch and Kangaroo Palace, all of which have a look I hope to duplicate for my vampire boy as various costumes of his worn through the ages in which he's lived. He's supposed to have been born human as Byron's by blow around 1811 or so, died and become a vampire at about age 30. But he's undead and doing well today so there will be plenty of costumes from 1811-now. I want to particularly give him 1800's costumes, mod type costumes from the 60's, and 80-90's punk-goth rocker clothes I am very fond of those era's and those looks. He'll have several different wigs and so forth too, to represent his various looks at different times.

His full name will be Georgie Byron Gordon. FYI, "Geordie" was what Lord Byron's mother called him as a child. It was sort of her pet name for him. So far as I know she was the only one to do so. The rest of his closer friends and intimates called him either "B" or in the case of the Shellys Albe. I've always liked it best of all Byron's names and so I used it for my boy.

Pics from HL. The straight haired ones are Byron in the modern day, all drugged out, unhealthy and dealing with major soul sucking ennui. The ones where he has curly hair and doesn't look quite so much like a walking corpse are from when he's supposedly just been made immortal back in the early 1800's, when he's in Switzerland and is staying at the Villa Diodati with the Shellys. Yes, that's the Frankenstein period which is what the episode is all about really. I'm of two minds about the HL episode. On one hand I like it a lot because Jonathan is great as Byron and I love that whole story of the stay with the Shellys and Frankenstein but on the other hand I absolutely HATE seeing Byron as serial killer villain of the week because that was so NOT fair to the real Byron. He was a royal PITA at times, definitely was chemically addicted, maybe bi-polar, but he was so not a murderer.

These are from Middlemarch and this is pretty much the 1800's look I want for him.

and lastly we have shots from Kangaroo Palace which embody the 60's look I like and also want him to have...

There will also be a later rocker look, but I haven't any pics of Jonathan like that unfortunately. The pics from An Ideal Husband and Bait are pretty good too as they tend to make him look rather pale and vampire like but I don't want the short, modern hair. If there is one thing I really love about "period" stuff with him it's the head full of Byronic curls and I totally miss them now that he's mostly cut them off to do more modern stuff. My boy he's got to have him some curls, at least part of the time, and the rest of it he'll have the modern HL Byron hair, only a bit more goth colored, I think. But he will never have "typical office guy" short hair. :P He won't look exactly like Firth, but he will resemble him a fair bit when I am done I think. I'd really like him to be a more hard edged, darker goth version of Firth as Byron though. For now I'm going to keep that minimal as I want to have him be able to play a normal skinned still pretty human looking vampire too, but eventually I'd like to have a second head so he can do full on vampire rocker mode too.

There are stage sets I'd love to do for that but I also want to make him a 19th century type room and something else that I can decorate to be 60's or 80's as the mood strikes. I plan on using him a lot for photographic stuff. One of my other dolls, my MA Kelly, he may just become a stand in for another younger male vampire a take off descendant character of Shelly and my Dai, she may just end up being somewhat of a love interest, the third in a triangle in various ages, we'll see. I've got all sorts of ideas for this but in the end it will depend upon how Geordie comes out and how much ambition I've ultimately got. I do have someone with better artistic skills than mine helping me with his head but the clothes and that, that's something I have to come up with...

I do have other fashion dolls that are celebrity dolls. I have Elizabeth Taylor, Twiggy, Kate Winslet, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Vivien Leigh, and Audrey Hepburn dolls. But somehow the idea of this doll it's different. On one hand I really want to do it because I think there's a lot of potential for fun with it, but I also feel kind of weird that I'm turning my major crush into a BJD. It's a bit stalker-ish for me. I generally get weirded out when people do things like this and yet here I am making myself a doll that looks just like my favorite imaginary BF...

    6. I confess I named my first doll Su after Su-Metal.
I've started sewing her Su-Metal's outfit.
I've also ordered another doll so I can call it Moa.
After that I know I'll buy one to call Yui so I can set all three girls up for photos in their band clothes.

Sure, my Su will have her own adventures and her personality will diverge from that from who she was spawned but I'll always remember where she started.

    7. i dunno. i don't find making BJD's based on characters to be any weirder than, say, buying an action figure. that's part of the reason i made a Riddick, couldn't find a decent fig for him, and i kinda liked the idea of a bigger scale.
granted, i would find making one of an actual person, celeb or otherwise, a bit weird unless it's someone you actually know personally and they would think it's cool. like, i would totally make one that looked like my niece if she wanted one/ was old enough. but i think it crosses into creepy-fan territory to do it of an actual celeb, and not the fictional characters they portray.

    8. I have no problem with people doing so, I just wouldn't do it myself.
I like to imagine stories for my dolls' characters and for a doll that is made look like or be like a living person or a character from somewhere, it just seems weird. I wouldn't know what the person or the character does in certain situations, also I wouldn't want to force actions on them, where I wouldn't know whether or not that's what they would do (if that makes any sense).

    9. my dream doll is actually to make one of Michonne from the Walking Dead....how could that not be the coolest bjd ever??? i want her so bad ;3; i love all character dolls, its fun to see people's interpretations of things, especially if its a show/movie/etc I'm fond of :3

    10. I think it's awesome whenever people manage to make a bjd look just like a celebrity or character! Although I wouldn't own one myself, I love looking at these dolls and seeing how close people can make them look like the real thing. I'm more interested in my dolls looking like my own characters, I wouldn't really be able to bond with one if they looked like a celebrity.

Ahhh that would be so cool!! Michonne is actually my favorite character from The Walking Dead and I think she'd make a beautiful bjd!

    11. @magkelly
"Modern Prometheus" was such a fun episode! Even with all the problems it had, I remember really enjoying enough of it that my memories are fond instead of exasperated over the handling. (I think that was my general feeling about Highlander all the time, actually...) And I really love the idea of a Byron/fictionalized Byron-inspired doll, too! That's just really cool.

(I may be a tremendous Romantic poet fangirl, sad and sordid histories and all)

    12. Hm... I like to see dolls like that, but I don't think I could do it myself because I don't think I would be really inspired by my doll if it wouldn't be a character of my own. ^_^

    13. I don't think I'd make a doll that looked like a celebrity, though having pieces (Tom Baker's doctor who scarf, a Jedi robe, Sailor scout uniform etc) would be fun as accessories :)

    14. I think fandom dolls are pretty cool, whether it be a "tribute" to the character or a character that belongs in the fandom. The next doll on my "get list" after my YiD Iple boy is an Island doll who is in the Dr. Who fandom. A friend of mine has the Dr. Who role playing system, and I fell in love with River and 11 as a couple--and of course, the Ponds. XD So I made a "time lady" (kinda--she's not a proper time lady yet but someday!) And I /love/ Roary to bits. (Her full name is Roary Williams after her grandpa. Although dad rather prefers Nina. XD)

    15. This is my Thor who is part the Thor from the marvel movies and part from how I wanted him to look. Angeltoast did his amazing face-up for me:)

    16. I say go for it! I've got no problems if people want to create their own miniature Tom Hiddleston or Attack on Titan character to own and pamper with doll stuff. As long as you're not hurting yourself or someone else, live and let live. It's not my place to judge you on your private, very expensive dolly affairs.

    17. I have nothing against it.
I'm actually interested in well done ones if someone cares to share a link. It adds a little bit difficulty when you have to make it look like someone already existing.

    18. Yep, fan girl here. I love the minimee celebrity heads and have quite a few of them. My Brad Pitt minimee was purchased here on DoA already dressed to the nines with a personality I wanted badly. He is Louis the Vampire from Anne Rice's Interview With the Vampire book made into a movie. He is lovely and is featured in a photo shoot on DoA. I have an Angelina Jolie floating head, Ron Perlman as the Beast, Milla Jovovich, Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Seldana as Neytiri and on and on. If I like a celebrity I pretty much want their head lol. I also have life casts of Angelina Jolie, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny that way predate my bjd obsession along with a lot of screen worn wardrobe and movie memorabilia too. Got a bad case of fan-itis.

Oh I soooooo want this one too! I love Bowie and Jareth is one of my all time favorite characters he has played. I even used to wear my hair like he did in his Ziggy Stardust days.

    19. I think fandom dolls can be lots of fun! I actually have a 27cm obitsu I'm making into one of my custom Commander Shepards from Mass Effect. Not sure I would ever do it with a resin BJD though because it's far too much money for my personally, considering how quickly I jump on new bandwagons and get bored with the things I thought I adored! I'm only making miniShep because I've loved the series for literally years.

However I'm a little iffy about celebrity dolls / dolls made to resemble real people. I've seen a whole bunch of Tom Hiddleston Lokis around and I've even seen a David Bowie, who was amazingly done! I think its a real skill to make something that so perfectly resembles a real person (anyone around here seen Noel Cruz / Noeling's amazing Tonner doll repaints? That man's skills are something else). They can be super gorgeous, but I do always wonder about the legal issues of creating an exact replica of a real person.

Personally my main issue with both of these things is that I get bored too easily and I'm way too indecisive to only have my dolls in one specific thing. I like change and variety too much!

    20. I've thought about buying a grey BBB/RS doll to make homstuck cosplays for in general, but I've never been able to convince myself to do it because I just don't have the huge need/want to go through with it. But I do love seeing other people do it, and I find it really creative and fun.
