Your opinion on Volks?

Feb 13, 2015

    1. I'm not sure what dolls you were looking at, but all my big Volks girls take 18 - 16mm eyes just like my Fairyland and LUTS dolls. Our little MSD guys take 14mm, again just like many other dolls I've owned. I actually really like their glass eyes and was buying them long before I had a Volks doll in my group.

Personally I love their heavy resin, the engineering on their bodies, and their generally adorable attitude towards their customers. I only recently started adding them to my collection and my wife and I are already up to five of them because they work really well with our other dolls. XD We've been Volksed.

    2. Yeah, I'm not trying to bash Volks, so if we can stay clean instead of jumping conclusions...
I do mean the anime style ones, when I say DD/Volks. Err...
The Miku and rest of the animes like Fate/ or Evangelion. They've been telling on their site that the dolls have 22-24mm eyes, and I was just wondering if it's easy to access this size outside the size's eye shop.
      But I got my answer.

    3. SlaveDan: Yes it's possible to get eyes of that size. There are more shops out there other then volks that sell eyes of that size.

I myslef, don't like the "anime" Dollfie Dreams girls, mostly because dolls of that type remind me of eechi-figures.

    4. You know - I TOTALLY can relate to that! *lol* Same here! :)

    5. I've always liked Volks dolls, and my very first BJD was a Mini DD (yes, an anime style one). My mistake was not having patience! She was awesome, but without a face up and difficult to find clothes for as she was a little chubby compared to most msd, and my FIRST bjd. I SERIOUSLY regret selling her without putting in the effort to understand her better. I should have put her away, and waited until I was able to gain access here.

If given the opportunity to own another Volks, I'd do it in an instant! I have some on my 'grail list' that if I was able to afford and find them, it would be a miracle!

    6. I think the DD are cute, but they need more care. However, I don't like the official faceup for the yosd, maybe the eyebrow is ok but others are not good.

    7. I never really paid attention to Volks. But somewhere along the way I found the F-38 head smiling impudently at me. And then went to the NYC Dolpa. And had a chance to get a Williams. Now I have a F-31 too. If I had a choice, I'd love for them to be on the taller SD17 bodies, but they're on the SD13 bodies and will have to stay that way. The SD13 aren't as posable as many of the bodies out there, but they're solid.

The heads look big (at least the males - I really still haven't paid much attention to the girls!), I think, because the faces are wide, with squarer jawlines than a lot of other brands, whose heads tend to be sharper-chinned, or boyish slender. They're still in proportion visually with the rest of my large-size collection. OTOH, they're not as "high" or have balloon-craniums like some other brands. The top of the head tends to be a bit low in comparison, and with more depth front to back.

Extra-large eyes are usually available through traditional doll supply sites.

    8. You can find animetic 22-24mm eyes other places, for example SQ Labs, Yahoo!Japan Auctions, ebay, Parabox, Ersaflora, and some other individual artists... Some of them can be hard to get a hold of, though. I ended up mostly buying Volks DD eyes because they are easier to get.

    9. My Volks Dollfie Dreams take eyes that are 20-22mm depending on how much white you want showing. Some sculpts like Rise can pull of 18mm eyes and look really mature. It is quite easy to find anime style eyes in a variety of larger sizes to fit DD eyes. As for resin Volks, well I prefer the older more stylized sculpts so those take 18-20mm usually. But some of the newer more realistic sculpts can use smaller eyes. I have always found Volks products to be of exceptional quality, and their customer service is top notch. I'm not sure what the OP wants to know... where to find DD eyes that are not made by Volks? try ersaflora.com. There are also many sellers on ebay, just search 'animetic eyes' or Dollfie Dream eyes.

    10. Out of curiosity...does volks make any resin mini super dollfie anymore?

    11. Yes they still make the MSD line. The midi is an updated body for it (like the graffiti body is an update to the SD13 line). You can still get the MSD body through FCS.

    12. I didn't know what those were, so I googled it. Cannot be unseen.

But yes, that's pretty much my feeling on Dollfie Dreams and other... extravagant dolls like that. Especially the ones with baby girl faces and ginormous boobs. That's a line crossed for me. :horror:

    13. I bought a few little dollfies a few years back. Back then, I was able to buy stuff with USD. Everything was packed nicely and they sent some helpful information pamphlets with my order. I very much liked their service.

    14. Volks makes beautiful dolls. I wish they weren't so hard to get, though.

    15. I bought my Volks Nana second hand, because I was not able to purchase her on the Volks-site (she was always sold out). I paid more than her actual retail price. :sweat But I don't regret it. The resin quality is very good in my eyes. I think she is the heaviest one of all my dolls. She poses very well despite her single joints.
As others stated her head is huge, much bigger than the head of my Rona for example. And she wears 18 mm eyes.
I would not buy a Volks doll again in the near future except a Dollfie Dream Miko (she is a dream of mine). They are hard to get from the company and I am not a fan of lotteries. And in my opinion the second hand dolls are sometimes overcharged, especially the limited ones.

    16. My first BJD was a Volks Nana13 that I got from their Ikebukuro shop back in 2002. So I do have a lot of fondness for the company. However, I've kind of moved away from them aesthetically. I used to have several Volks dolls, now I'm down to one and I'm even considering selling that one. I just prefer other company face sculpts and body sculpts to Volks sculpts these days. Though I do think SD Coco is an adorable doll. :)

    17. Thanks for all the answers -
But do they make also males? I've seen only 100% females there.

    18. Not that I've seen, the females DDs are very popular with the male-otaku.

    19. Totally biased, because I got into BJDs because of Volks dolls, and they're still my favourite for resin quality and for how alive the sculpts seem to look. I don't have any DDs, though there are a couple I wouldn't mind owning.

Every once in a while I hear rumours of DD boys, but I've never seen one. Plenty of resin boys, though!

Volks has been around so long and produced enough sculpts that it's getting hard to make generalizations about things like eye size or head proportions. There are pinheaded sculpts like F-36, Heath, Kanata, Maki T., . . . and big ol' melonheads like the Four Sisters, Nono, Kun, Yori, Ryo, etc.

    20. I actually love the DD, I love the anime style, and they fit in with my cosplay ideas. I'm not fond of the GIANT breasts myself, but I can see them working.

Though right now, I'd be more tempted to buy a Smart Doll than Volks.
