Your opinion on Volks?

Feb 13, 2015

    1. I think they are glorified a bit the old bodies aren't that great :)

    2. Love them! The eye size depends on the doll itself. My Kohya has 14mm eyes, my DWC-01 has 16mm and my old FCS-05 has 18mm. It also depends on the look you want, I don't like the look of the iris taking up most of the eyewell but some people find it cute.

    3. I find them unattractive and overpriced.

    4. "If you can't say something nice, then don't say nothing at all."

Or, A more detailed explanation would be more interesting to read.

    5. It's a Volks thread, haters gonna hate.

    6. I was just gonna say - odd, it's the same with me and many of the Soom or Fairyland Limiteds that seem to be all the rave. I find them - well, kinda unattractive and overpriced ... :P

    7. When I first got into this hobby, I had little to no knowledge of Volks, and could not understand the stigma surrounding it when my friends tried to explain it to me. I was more attracted to more aesthetically realistic dolls, so Volks did not appeal to me... and of course, their prices did not help. My first Volks doll was the SD16 Yukinojo, whom I felt at that time was the most masculine of BJDs in general, he looked very unique with his square jaw and broad, muscular body (even though he isn't exactly the most popular). When he arrived, I was immediately impressed by his weight and feel.

Over time, I've grown a real appreciation for the Volks quality of resin from seeing how my Yukinojo aged as compared to my other BJDs from other companies. Even though I do not love all of the Volks' sculpts, they are now my company of preference as I've been won over by their resin quality. Of course, this is just a personal opinion and I do still appreciate the sculpts of various other companies. I would just prefer to pay for the resin quality as a long term investment.

I do wish Volks would be a bit more available or accessible in terms of their limited edition dolls and sculpts, even though I understand they are a very traditional company. They seem to be a small division of Volks in general, so perhaps not the best funded to be able to mass produce while maintaining their quality control. Most of the markup comes from the second hand market, so Volks isn't exactly profiting from that. Perhaps this will change over time, one can only hope!

    8. The look of Volks dolls is like, a very doll doll look, I for one prefer a more human like dolls and face shapes, that's why I'd hardly pick a doll like that.
I mostly see the Volks dolls on the clothing sites promo, and they seem to be perfect models.

    9. I love the weight and feel of Volks' resin. I'm not a fan of the huge-eyed look, so there are a large number of Volks sculpts that aren't my thing, but the dolls they put out that are more to my taste I tend to absolutely love. As far as I'm concerned they do quality work (not always to my taste, but even then I can still appreciate the dolls for what they are). I wish they made it easier to buy direct, but that is what it is.

I don't understand the "overpriced" complaints either - the standard models have mid-range prices, and even the seemingly-expensive LEs tend to have elaborate outfits that explain why they're priced the way they are. Frankly, even the secondary market doesn't need to be costly - I see limited dolls with their fullsets for well under the original price on Mandarake all the time. If people pay the extreme mark-ups, that's strikes me as being a choice those individuals are making for convenience rather than a reflection of the actual base prices of the dolls themselves.

    10. I had a basic Volks doll once. Their MSD Ken, I believe. He didn't seem like anything particularly special and I didn't keep him very long, but some of their newer dolls and limited ones are very beautiful. In particular, their Dollfie Dream Nia is kind of my dream doll. I so regret not being able to afford Nia when she came out!

    11. I admit that when I first entered the hobby, the Volks sculpts were not as appealing to me as others. But since I've seen more and more, and what owners have done with them, I want one! I am just on the look out for the sculpt that is right for me and my collection. They seem like such high quality dolls and I can appreciate the Volks legacy and their huge contribution to making the BJD hobby what it is today. It is definitely a goal for me to own one some day in the future.

    12. I had a similar experience. However I thought the dolls were way out of my price range or difficult to obtain so I gave up initially. But now I have three (plus a floating head), all bought second-hand from DoA. Two were quite new, but the third is at least 10 years old and is still in wonderful condition apart from loose stringing. ^^ I would really love to visit a sumika in Japan and buy one in person though.

    13. It really depends on what you are looking for...
some people like anime facial features and others prefer realistic.
You can arrange customized order from glass eye maker : ) eyes should not be a big problem
Personally, I think Volks is classic for BJD collectors and would highly recommend!!!

    14. I really like Volks, and would love to own one of their dolls in the future, but mainly because of what I've heard about them. Aesthetically, I'm on the fence about their face sculpts, but I've heard they're great quality dolls. Personally, I think the most beautiful face sculpts come from Korea <3.

    15. I love Volks!!! There dolls are really cute sure there expensive but it's because there quality is amazing!!

    16. Volks were, unusually, the first company I knew about, though mostly through their OT 1/6 dolls, which I will say as a side point I do actually like.

However with the BJDs, I am not sure. I assume it is more because the large eyes are really not an aesthetic I like, but the faces of some of their dolls appear to be too childish or exaggerated in features. I really don't like that.
However, I will say, some of the clothing that they make is gorgeous. Expensive yes, but lovely.

For a note, this is why I personally do not own them. I do not change my attitude toward people who do own them, after all, the reason they picked out their doll is going to be the same as why I picked out mine - because they liked them. There is nothing wrong with that ^^ Liking a particular doll is not an elitist thing or a status symbol thing, it is liking a particular doll.

    17. That is exactly why I like Volks! To each their own!

    18. I really love their faces! Not so much their bodies...but I do love what I've seen of the sdgr body:love

    19. Volks bodies are my favorite! I think they are just beautifully sculpted, especially the SD10 & SD13. I like the old school dolls, I guess. Much, much better in my eyes than the cheap, poorly sculpted, anatomically weird (tube arms, anyone?) bodies out there. Which I have owned and sold on, keeping the heads to hybrid onto a nicer body. Old Volks bodies are not as posable but they are rock steady, tough as nails, and don't have weird square or gaping joints. To each their own. Since I tend to like older, less popular sculpts my Volks dolls were all pretty good bargains; but even the newer fullsets don't seem too overpriced. The outfits are sublime, and when they are collaborations with clothing brands like BtSSB they're going to be pricey but they hold their value well. Not a lot of other clothing brands out there that hold value as well as Volks.

    20. I have several Volks dolls (two SD girls, one MSD, 3 DD and one yoSD), and I love them! I wasn't partial to Volks at first, but I gradually came to like their dolls.
