Your opinion on Volks?

Feb 13, 2015

    1. I absolutely love Volks, they produce quality in everything they do. and although the dolls are limited and harder to obtain, the price and quality of their dolls for me is the best i've ever owned. The resin is smooth and the weight is great too. They really stand out for me and They have a good variety of different sculpts.
People say that Volks are very animeish. I think that if you do some research they have different lines for their dolls where they have different concepts and different molds that are more realistic. My only complaint would be how difficult it is to get parts like hands. other then that its a great brand.

    2. I really love Volks. The quality of their resin is amazing.
I also love their cute faces, even on mature dolls. Round faces are so cute ^_^

    3. It's the quality that convinced me. The design. Beautiful, and well thought through. I'm a big fan and though I have only one Volks doll, a secondhand elf boy, he's one of my favorites and when I received him I thought- why didn't I start with Volks much earlier!

    4. I love Volks, I dont own many of them, but I've got an MSD Mako and Yo-Sd Ryo Asuka, and I love them.
I got them when I visited Japan last year =)
I think they have their elegant look, their innocence?

    5. I like the older chubby bodies very much from Volks and the dollfie dream dolls also ... but I must say that the resin heads are mostly ...not my style ...I like the realistic looking heads more from other brands ;-) only the dollfie dream dolls are okay for me from volts because they are pure anime lol

    6. I like them alright, but haven't yet seen any I thought "wow I have to have one!" as I mostly prefer a fantasy style. I love to see other people's though :)

    7. I love love Volks! They're my favorite company!

Funny thing is, I used to hate their sculpts. 10 years ago I was a childish highschooler and would talk bad about them lol. They looked weird at first... and to be fair, their old make up wasn't the greatest at selling the lovely headsculpts.
I didn't get what the rave is all about. And one day my friend came back from Japan with a brand new MSD Mika, she asked me "Hey I'm going to sell her for 300 bucks. Do you want her?" and I was like "Heck, why not. It's a Volks and that's an awesome deal". And then I slowly learned to appreciate "what it's all about". The heft of the resin, the flexibility of look with different face up. Definitely has its own je ne sais quoi.

I've owned (and sold) many dolls from different companies and Volks by far has the best quality resin material and is the most durable. It is also reassuring that you can always go back to them should things go wrong with your dolls. They have great service and very consistent with their marketing practices. I also love the unique looks that Volks dolls tend to have with different face ups. I don't know how they do it because other companies' sculpts, although lovely, tend to have the same look a lot of the times. They also have good quality clothes and shoes, but the styles tend to be geared towards the Japanese market so it may seem odd to some people who have different idea of "stylish" from different cultures.

On the negative side, their sculpt is not for everyone. Definitely more of an acquired taste as oppose to say... Switch's textbook pretty boys sculpts that appeal to a huge demographic in the hobby (don't get me wrong I LOVEEE Switch and my fair share of pretty boys). It's also hard to order from them. I rely on my friends in Japan or 2nd hand market. That's extra cost in so many ways, making their price ridiculously, unnecessarily high. The USA website is okay but rather bare. It's buggy as heck and it's frustrating to buy from them. It crashes a lot during high traffic periods. I'm also not a big fan of their wigs or eyes. Their Zoukeimura eyes are often defective with a lot of air bubbles in it or shaped weird. Sometimes they have debris caught in them despite their high price. Their wigs have really nice texture but prone to flyaways and the styles are really meh. They are also not that customize-able.

With all that said, I still love Volks and I always look forward to their new releases.

    8. when i was younger i used to be really obsessed with the volks dolls but now i find them all to be really generic, i'm sure i am the only one who thinks so >< but i still have a soft spot for sara! she was the first doll i got really into c:

    9. I love Volks. My YoSD Kira is one of my favorite BJDs---there is just something magical about her.

I especially love their SDCs but Volks doesn't seem to add new dolls to that line very often. :(

    10. I like their clothes, but you can find similar clothes for cheaper from sellers on Etsy at times. I don't like their sculpts much, but that's just me. I think they might be an acquired taste.

    11. Umm i think they are a great company but the lottery system is just too confusing for me to be bery honest and their dolls are just so expensive

    12. I don't have any desire to own most of their sculpts but I do love the company

Even if some of their dolls are delinquents

    13. I'm in love with their Hijikata (old version). He's limited and costs like an army but I just can't help my self // //
Almost all their limited dolls are so beautiful! But the regular ones scare me alittle with their oversized eyes and heads, girls especially. I don't know if I would have gotten myself their girl - not my style(

Had an experience buying from their Japanese site though - the quality is top and prices for parts, clothes and wigs are reasonable (as for me).

    14. I know Volks are pretty famous and loved, but the whole Anime thing does not work for me at all. Nothing against them, just not my cup of tea.

    15. Volks is my favorite company. If you aren't interested in buying a standard model from the Volks site, look into buying a second hand doll here on the market. I have several second hand Volks dolls as well as ones I won in lottery. They're all great and people on DOA are super helpful if you're trying to identify a certain model :)

    16. I'm going to have to recant my statement here! For the last few months I found myself drawn to Volks and I bought an SDC Mina a few weeks ago off of here, and I have to say that she is an angel! The construction of her body is beautiful (I love that her head is sueded) and the resin has such a nice feel and weight to it! Her faceup is so vibrant while still being versatile. The clothes! Oh my God, Volks clothes blow anything else out of the water!

I have to say I have a new appreciation for Volks beyond the respect I had before, and I can see myself owning more dolls from them in the future. The quality is top notch and they still have that 'old BJD' aesthetic that I love. I can't believe I didn't get one sooner!

    17. Slowly but surely Volks is starting to annoy me. I still love their dolls - absolutely! But the company itself ... So I'm planning a trip to Japan for my 40th birthday in 2017. And of course, Volks and Tenshi no Sato are the main purpose for me to go. I mean, yah, there's lots of stuff to see in Japan but still, for me, the main attraction is Volks. So I'm all like:

Okay, maybe I'll try for one of those gorgeous one-offs! Huh? Oh. Nope, I won't - no Japanese address. Well, then, maybe a Dolpa - could try for one of the lottery dolls. What? They changed the rules? I now need a Japanese address for taking part in the lottery? Well, bummer ... Maybe get one of their Tenshis, then, my favourite is Yugiri - and obviously is only available at certain events and I bet you need a Japanese address if you want to try to get one ... So what else? I can't go for a brandnew FCS doll either because of the Japanese address thing. I CAN visit Tenshi no Sato, obviously, even though non-Japanese customers can't be VIP members (no Japanese address) and you need a VIP member to be allowed to visit Tenshi no Sato. They graciously allow me to also bring a visitor. Oh wow. (At this point, my thoughts are positively dripping with sarcasm.) Well, so I'll go to Tenshi no Sato and look at all those things I can't have because I don't friggin' live in Japan! Fine! Huh? I still can buy a coordinate model at one of the Sumikas? Thanks, Volks, you're too kind but I'm not into the "cute and childlike" look ... Besides, by now I'm just too annoyed at you to want to buy anything from you at all. So why don't you keep your coordinate models and I'll go buy a Smart Doll from Danny Choo instead? By the time I go there he'll probably have several more released, in more skin colours, and he's got a MALE one, too. Or maybe I'll look for a nice second hand doll at Mandarake?

Seriously, I do love my Volks dolls - but Volks as a company could make things a little easier for non-Japanese fans. Especially European fans. At least, the U.S. fans have their Sumika and Online FCS and every once in a while a One-Off lottery ... *pout*

    18. (Honestly, most companies in Japan not specifically targeting tourists could stand to make things a little easier for non-Japanese... I just moved to Tokyo and it's a pain in the butt trying to do anything more complicated than buying groceries.)

But actually though, to @Khell or anyone else dealing with the same frustrations, let me know if I can help somehow, since I have a Japanese address, basic language proficiency, and plenty of sympathy. (You think getting a doll is hard as a foreigner, try getting an apartment or a credit card. *Grumblegrumble*)

Regarding the thread topic, some of their dolls are very pretty, but they're rarely to my taste and MUCH too expensive for me.

    19. Volks Volks Volks...

let me just say that I am not a fan of anime. Yes, most sculpts have an "anime" style to them, but for me, I can't handle the big eyes and the huge huge boobs and the mouths that I have seen. My friend has a volks and I have to admit, the more I look at her, the more my negative feelings disappear, but for the most part, I can't handle the sculpt :/

If you like the sculpt- by all means, continue to like/love the sculpt. This is just my opinion and I didn't mean to offend or start any hate :)

    20. Well, it depends on the sculpt, actually, whether Volks dolls look "anime" or not. Volks has quite some sculpts that do NOT look particularly "anime". They do have more than one sculpt ... ;) Personally, I don't really like the "anime" look either but Volks has some beautiful sculpts - try Ryoma Sakamoto or their SD16 Garnet or Ruby, for example. Or their Isami Kondo.
