Your preferred collection: Few dolls/lots of stuff, or many dolls/few things for them

Jan 24, 2015

    1. Well, I can sew a bit and I like to make doll clothes so that cuts down on a lot of spending on that. So long as my dolls have a wig, nice eyes, and shoes I'm fine and I don't need to spend a whole lot on them other than that. I buy used mostly so actually I don't spend a whole lot on that either. All my dolls together would probably cost a little more maybe than one expensive doll. I like having a bunch, but knowing that I didn't break the bank on them makes me feel a whole lot less guilty about having them. I'm not dropping a grand on one doll plus $500 more on accoutrements. If you're at a low level of collecting, not buying the really expensive dolls and you're willing to sew a lot it's easier to have more. I put my $$$ into the resin mostly but even then I don't go crazy. I'm definitely a "the more the merrier" person when it comes to dolls but only if I'm able to budget wisely for it.

    2. I'd prefer few dolls that have lots of stuff, but unfortunately it's worked out to be the opposite. :(

    3. I planned to have a few dolls with plenty of outfits and wigs or eyes, that allows me to change the dolls' styles. The fact is I keep buying new dolls.(โ•ฅ๏นโ•ฅ)

    4. I used to want to have few dolls with many stuffs but ending up with many dolls and many stuffs :sweat From now on I will order and buy only stuffs for dolls but no more new doll.

    5. I think it's more ideal to have fewer dolls and more things to buy for them. However, I don't think that's how I am going to be! I keep seeing dolls that I want. The only thing slowing me down is the money to buy the dolls.

    6. used to be few dolls many outfits, but now it is many dolls two outfits each. I can't afford the storage of just clothes. Also each doll has a unique fashion sense. :D

    7. Fewer dolls, a lot of things for them! IMO, you won't get tired of your doll easily if you have lots of items to choose from. Plus, getting their stuff is wa cheaper than getting another doll XD

    8. I only have one BJD but he is spoiled rotten. I have so much clothes and props for him.

    9. I think you can do both. Just take your time and make sure each new doll has a few things of their own before you buy them another companion. It gets easier as you go, because as Jenny Nemesis said, you start to accumulate things (eyes and wigs especially) and some dolls really do find their way to a 'finished' state and stay there. We do have a couple of dolls over here who are serious clothes horses though, but they get priority because they're our favorites. XD

    10. I have both. Two thirds of my collection has just the clothes they are wearing, with nothing to spare. The other third, which is the group I play with most, has lots of clothes, shoes, wigs, props and furniture.

    11. Definitely prefer small collection—lots and lots of stuff. I don't like the image of cluttered dolls, tons of sizes and names and concepts to work with and develop, and a bunch of mismatching aesthetics and scales and unfinished 'projects'. Just... much too messy, much too cluttered, and much, much too expensive. Honestly, I find the whole process of having to collect the resin dolls themselves to be a stressful chore hanging over my list. I'm much prefer to spend the money on all the fun, delectable ~things~ that makes dolls truly shine.

I specifically put a lot of time and thought into my doll plans before buying my first one because I wanted to try to narrow down my collection into the bare minimum I could own while fulfilling all the 'basic needs' of what I wanted from my dolls. I basically saw the dolls as models first, so I wanted at least one of each generic 'type', haha. I narrowed it down to an hourglass girl, a young man, a flat tomboy girl, a slim 'tomgirl' boy, and at least one child (possibly two). Despite a bit of experimenting along the way, in the end I keep coming back to my original plan, so I feel it must be a solid one. The dolls I've received that lie out of my original plan just haven't worked out; they don't fit in and they caused me stress because of the aforementioned feelings of 'clutter' and 'unfinished projects' and 'extra expense'.

Recently, I've decided to let go of two of those unexpected dolls that I've tried to make work for a long time, and it's made me feel much happier about my collection, whittling down from five to three, hahaha. At a few points I wigged myself out by falling in love with other dolls and trying to work out if I could manage a whopping FIFTEEN dolls or TWELVE dolls in my plans, hahaha. But I keep managing to give myself a reality check and see if I still love those new dolls three years from now, or whenever I finish my current 'group'. One unplanned little girl will stay with me, but for the rest of my collection, I plan to stay true to my original plan, and keep my list SMAAAALLL.

I am very good at spoiling the few dolls I have though, heheh. I always need at least two wigs, at least three pairs of shoes, and at least a few full outfits plus some separates to mix-and-match, and that's the bare minimum! Plus I'm a total hoarder when it comes to furniture and props. Being loyal to the 1/4 scale really spoils me in the furniture regard, hahaha. My full plans for each doll though are extensive. I want them all to have several choices in wigs, and full matching outfit ensembles along with clothes in their own styles, and in every other style under the sun. I still view them largely as models for the clothes I'd love to own or admire, so I want lolita clothes, street fashion, historical and traditional clothing of all kinds, fantasy clothing, cosplay you name it. I WANT IT ALL~ Though I've been saying it since the day I started BJDs and I still haven't truly succeeded in any significant way, I'll keep saying that I also wish to use BJDs to learn to sew and make fashions on my own, as well as other creative endeavors.

The way I think of my dolls in terms of their material needs is almost like they're people themselves, hahaha. Basically, I want to spoil them with wardrobes and things almost as much as a person could have. It feels like a waste to me to get such an expensive doll only to have them show off one look or one outfit all the time, and extremely expensive to buy a new hunk of resin for every new look and style. However, I don't use dolls to shell characters that I've already made, so my expectations for my dolls are different many others. My main focus for BJDs is on the clothes and fashion.

    12. My plan is to complete my original family of OC's along with their outfits so like...4 for them. After that, maybe I'll just buy other dolls IF another character comes to mind. In the mean time, I want to complete their original outfits and maybe spoil them a little with extra shoes or clothes and even eyes or wigs. But yes, I also want to complete my initial family of oc's before I move onto the next dolls :D little by little of course~ I don't want to splurge [I save that for christmas time XD ]

    13. I have a lot of dolls, but not nearly enough clothes. I worry that if I spend money on clothes, the sculpts I want will retire when I can't afford them. I'm hoping to collect all the sculpts I really want, then buy them lots of clothes and wigs and eyes.
There's also the matter of price...bjds are expensive, but it feels like they're worth that much. BJD clothes, on the other hand, cost much, much more than clothes I buy for myself, so they don't always feel like they're worth the price. That makes it easier for me to buy dolls than clothes.

    14. I started off with more dolls, less stuff. I'm now (mostly) building up the stuff. The plan is to have the right eyes (think I'm there with that), the right wigs (definitely there with that now, with a few spare that work if a change is needed), 2-3 pairs of shoes (slippers, shoes, boots) for those who wear shoes - I'm about 1-2 pairs off getting there, and a couple of outfits/mix and match items each - I'm there for the MSDs apart from one (which I need to make), nowhere near for the tinies.

I have a lot of 1:6 scale props, some for the Real Pukis, and mostly none for anyone bigger than 1:6, unless you count backdrops

    15. I haven't gotten a doll yet but I think I will have a few dolls and lots of clothes and accessories. I notice I am quite picky with choosing and the wait for the RIGHT doll is so painful. I really want to buy a doll but, alas, they elude me. I mostly will buy from a SOOM Idealian and maybe an EID Iplehouse. I think the ideal size for me is 2 dolls, up to 3 max. But I really want to keep it at 2 so they can have one another and 100% of each others' attention. Also, I have tons of accessories websites bookmarked, ready for purchase the moment I find the right doll. So I think they will be quite spoiled.

    16. Hmmm... I prefer lots of stuff for fewer dolls. I think I spend more time clothes, wig and eye shopping more than anything else. For me, that's the fun part.

    17. I am definitely in the 'few dolls with many things' category. Space and money are both very limited on my end, so I really have to be careful about what I buy.

    18. This is kinda the reason why I only collect MSD's and have just ventured into SD, I have alot of dolls like 14+ and I like they are all MSD cause they all share clothes pretty much, and wigs, and eyes. So i guess for me the answer would be lots of bjds lots of stuff too. I do make alot of my clothes though to save on costs and such.

    19. I would loooooooooove to have a small collection (10 or less) of dolls with lots of things for them. I've failed at making set characters for my dolls so far, so I seem to be constantly changing their wigs and eyes and clothing styles. I've ended up with a large collection with lots of stuff that feels very unorganized!

Big goal for this year is to figure out who everyone is, decide on their set looks and styles and start cleaning things up. Hopefully maybe get down to a smaller, more varied collection XD

    20. I've got a trio of anthro OT dolls that are what started me in the hobby. They don't have much - just an outfit each to keep them decent and some chairs to sit on.
My current resin family is two little girls - a Mystic Kids MSD and a Bobobie Tiny - and they're getting lots of stuff. I'm making a lot of clothes for them, and that's where my current interests lie.
So, I'm with the few dolls lots of stuff contingent.
