Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Your reasons for choosing your first doll?

Jun 21, 2011

    1. I got some money for Christmas, enough to buy a small, not too expensive BJD. I had been wanting to get one for a long time, but didn't have the funds. So when I realized I could finally own one, I began to search secondhand markets for a doll that I would like and that wouldn't be too big. I was afraid of not liking BJDs as I had never seen one except in photo, so I decided that a YOSD would be better instead of getting a big MSD first.

Some member of the French forums I used was selling her Plantedoll Mini Riz. The doll looked cute, though I didn't like the make-up. I went to Flickr looking for owner pics, and when I saw the potential of the sculpt, I decided to buy her. She was really more like a test for me, but when she arrived home, I fell in love with her. Since then I found out I'm more comfortable with MSDs, but there's no way I'm selling my Mini Riz!!

    2. My first and most important reason was a doll who is perfect for my character, Nina. I searched dolls which are perfect to my character-rule, and I found the perfect one. The last thing I had to do was to pay for her :D

    3. I have yet to buy my very first doll, but I know what I want my first one to be.

5StarDoll's Chu. My reasons for wanting this particular doll is the fact that she's a fairly standard size, not as expensive as other dolls, and I fell completely in love with her facial sculpt. I guess that's the most important thing for me - I don't buy anything expensive unless I'm completely in love with how it looks, and her face is just perfect.

    4. My first doll was Nono. I love her big eyes! She just jumped out at me I guess. If I ever had to or just decided to sell my dolls I'd still hang on to her.

    5. I'm interesting in BJD for about a half a year but because of work problems I haven't order any from that time.
But I have a lot of time to find my perfect sculpt and I did... several days ago!
I just fall for Souldoll Chiron human version aith Centaur head... but unfortunately... in grey skin.
He's perfect for my OC and I know that it must be him...
but as I said... unfortunately because grey skin in unavalible now and I still have to wait Dx
      I'm dying...

    6. I saw a BJD on DA a few years ago, and my curiosity was instantly piqued. I really wanted a Luts Delf, and since Luts was the only company I knew of at the time, they seemed to be a decent price. Unfortunately my mom didn't think so, so I wasn't able to get one. Fast-forward to last year around October-November, when I again saw a beautiful BJD on DeviantART. I started doing more research and discovered Resinsoul- their dolls were easily affordable and beautiful, and I fell for their Rong sculpt. :)

    7. I picked based on price - I didn't want to spend very much money at the time. It wasn't a matter of not having enough saved, but rather I didn't feel comfortable spending over $200 on the doll itself when I knew that I'd have to spend more money on eyes/clothes/wigs. I also knew I wanted an MSD size doll, since 60 cm seemed huge. From there, I just went through all the MSD sculpts in my price range (there weren't many at the time!) and picked the one I liked the most, a Bobobie Tony. I did end up selling him years later, but I don't regret the purchase. I think it's fine to buy based on price - there's less money to lose if it doesn't work out.

    8. I actually just paid for my doll a few days ago (Infiniti Nari)
I have been looking and researching for about a year and a half now and stumbled across Infiniti doll's website about 8 months into my research. I was going to go for a supia doll, but found that more and more I looked, the more I saw things in their body I didn’t like...and the more and more I looked at other websites the more heads I wanted to get! haha I think you have to ration yourself down to at least 3 dolls and then just pick one out of a hat and if you find yourself disappointed in what you drew, you know which one you want the most.

I chose Nari because I love their body sculpt and even though it may not be as flexible as others I just saw the beauty and the versatility in their sculpt.
I also was looking for a fairly versatile head and character and thought Nari fit the brief.

    9. It was PKF Luna who got me into BJDs. I saw some owner pics in another forum of her and was completely hooked! I looked at tons of pics of her on flickr and did a lot of research to find out if BJDs are the right thing for me. Two years later I finally caved in and bought her <3

    10. I quite literally fell in love with the sculpt. At the time I was finding a lot of sculpts I liked, but always had my doubts. When I saw Crobidoll’s Yeon-ho on flickr, I was smitten.
      And two and a half years later I still love the sculpt to bits. I have two going on three -_-;

    11. For me picking my first doll was, as it is with most, challenging. For one I couldn't get over how curvy Iplehouse's sculpts were and found myself drawn to their dolls, Leona was actually going to be my first pick but I had doubts about actually getting her as much as I loved the sculpt I kept on changing my mind on if I really wanted her or not. When their new YID line came out I found myself drooling over Emilia, I loved everything about her especially how her lips were shaped and how soft her expression could be with the proper face up. In the end what it came down to was that I had not once swayed from the idea or want of getting Emilia, so once I had enough I bought her. She's still very new to me and I haven't had enough time to 'get to know her' since she's my first BJD, but thus far I'm ecstatic about having purchased her!

    12. I don't know what it was specifically about Nick... I just fell in love. I did like that [for my first time] Volks had a USA site. I was so scared about ordering such an expensive item if I didn't understand the website fully. I have a good grip on them now though... I think. XD;;;;

    13. My first doll is actually third-hand, which lowered her price a bit, and this was a major factor in my decision. Of course, I didn't forget to consider that I actually have to love how she looks. :P Her face fit my preferred dollie aesthetic, big eyes pouty lips, and a relatively roundish face. The face-up by Mingyi (commissioned by the previous owner) was a huge bonus for me too, because it made her even more attractive to me.

    14. I had seen my first BJD through a friend about 4-5 years before I actually got one. I had seen tons of pictures, and while I thought they were pretty, I fell hard for the MNF Shushu. Her official Fairyland photo was just...Enchanting. It took me ages to realize I wanted to get into BJD's, but I knew, very well, that I wanted a Shushu, it's such a gorgeous mold in my opinion, and I didn't care about the price, I just needed that one.

    15. After looking at approximately seven million photos of dolls, these were the ultimate criteria:

      1) My budget was constrictive. I knew I wanted to try an MSD size, but with my monetary limits, the only company that I liked and could afford was Resinsoul.

      2) I wanted a girl. My plans for doll-ownership included pretty hair, frilly dresses, and well... girlishness.

      3) I wanted a fantasy doll. I would have been happy with a Rong or a Mei, but to me, the Yao sculpt was the ultimate because she had elf ears, horns, and hooves. I like that sort of stuff.

      4) This was a lesser requirement, but I preferred the doll be in stock in my country. I didn't want to wither during a long wait for my very first doll. I was lucky enough that Yao was available in the skintone I wanted (light tan) at JunkySpot, so I was able to have her within a week of ordering her.

And... that's that! I'm very happy with my choice, and would do it again.

For the record, I'm pretty sure my next doll with be MNF Shushu. She's pretty different from my first, but completely what I want!

    16. i was looking for a female doll that wasnt so expensive that could be my "shay" a character i had been drawing for the last 7 years ... it tok a while but i finally found her!

    17. The face was the only reason I chose my first doll, he looked just like the character in my mind.

But nowadays I consider more, such as quanlity, body shape, color...

    18. My first doll is kind of impulsive buying. :sweat

I already looked on many pictures...just a few companies actually, but I don't have any idea there's so much choices back then. I remember that Dream of Doll caught my attention most then I decided to go on a DoI Ives.

Then BUMP! I found a company named Soom on my birthday!!
They released Little Gem Shale/Adamelli (msd sized) that time. Limited time, gaaawwwd... what is this?!! Few days of struggling and I end up ordering it.

I spent months waiting. Patience..patience..patience..for my first doll. Good point of this, I consider waiting time for dolls I bought later from other company is nothing. LOL.

I never regret this decision. My Shale is as wonderful as I wish.

    19. When i looked into BJD's i didn't find any good enough for me to say i want. But then i fell for the Fairyland MSD Miyu sculpt. She was just to precious from the others to miss. And then i found out about the active line body and how well they moved. Eventually there as no reason not to get her as my first.Plus everyone kept saying how much she looked like me,lol. That's what put the icing on the cake.

    20. In 2005 when I decided I was ready to buy, I really had my sights set on a Volks SD13 Shiro Tachibana-- but he was a limited edition who'd been sold out for 2 years, so I set him aside early as a grail to keep looking for. But that summer Volks released SDCute Arashi, who had the same kind of teen-anime-tough-guy aspect that Shiro did, and I fell madly in love with the little dude. He came with a challenging little smile, big stompy black boots, shaggy hair, and in his sales photo he looks like he's bumming a cigarette. :D

Sometimes the 'spirit' I get from a doll outweighs the academics of the sculpt itself. Love is one of those "I know it when I see it" things.
