Your reasons for choosing your first doll?

Jun 21, 2011

    1. My first doll was actually bought at a convention after literally 4 years of looking into getting into the hobby itself. I did LOADS of research and when I found one of my dream dolls at A-kon, the opportunity was too great. I bought him and have never looked back!

I now own 3 dolls, Impldoll Abdule MSD, Bobobie Apollo SD, Dollzone Bunny v1 (Small Anthro), and a FantasyDoll Glen (23cm - on it's way).

    2. My first doll was a Souldoll Vito Sharics. Id seen BJD's years prior and really REALLY wanted one of my own. I wanted an extremely masculine boy with a very detailed sculpt.. vito's are just that x'D I just got him back in February of this year. after getting such a "bad boy" i really wanted something sweet to tone it down, but i didnt think i was ready for a girl doll so i did some research and found DIM jullis/ace/harlech. I had a REALLY hard time deciding between these boys but i ended up getting my second doll, a harlech<3 hes such a sweetheart! while i was picking him up a friend of mine was selling her resinsoul yao.. so.. i got her too x'D this was all like 3 days ago so im SUPER excited to have my dollfamily expand so quickly! im actually getting a fourth on friday too :P

    3. I picked a Bobobie Isabella as my first doll for a couple of reasons. Affordability was definitely one of them. Another was size; I wasn't interested in any of the larger dolls and the Isabella was tiny but not too tiny.

    4. Hm, the reason I bought my first doll? "He's perfect! :fangirl:" ... about sums up my reasons.

Oh, alright, there was a bit more thought process to it.

I fell for two molds... a limited, no longer available doll and an unlimited doll that looked very, very similar. I simply didn't know there was an aftermarket, so I put aside the limited doll and focused on the unlimited doll. Then I went and looked at every other doll model I could find to see if any struck me more. But I just kept coming back to the unlimited doll. (There was a lot less choice back then, too.)

In addition, I knew right off the bat that my first doll was going to be something of an experiment. I wanted to try doing their face-up, and re-stringing them, and sanding their seams, and changing their eyes, and and and.... Well, with all of the things which could potentially go wrong due to sheer stupidity or ignorance, I really liked knowing if worst came to worst, I could re-buy the head mold or doll.

For this reason, the (at the time) unlimited Luts/Cerberus Project Delf El Special, which came with an extra Dreaming El head as well, calmed my paranoid newbie nerves down considerably.

    5. I just fell in love with the mold. In the past, I had bought stuff from Featherfall for my girlfriend and kept receiving their newsletter. When I received the anouncement of the Iruhi Elf, it was PERFECT for me! I just love his face and his little elf ears. He was just the one I needed!

    6. I did research for three months before buying my first BJD in 2005. I was drawn most to Volks dolls at the time due to the aesthetic of them, and the first one I knew I wanted was SD13 Mimi, but she wasn't the first one I bought. For some reason, I didn't want her to be my first BJD. The first male BJDs I knew I wanted, SoulDolls Lune and Paris, weren't the first ones I brought home either. I felt like I was looking for something else, but strangely I didn't have anything specific in mind.

I was watching a Volks Kohya in an ebay auction, and he was beautiful... but I just couldn't justify shelling out $1000+ to buy him. As soon as the auction was over, I went back to the Volks Japan website to look at the available SD13 boys there. There were two, Syo and Link. I chose Link because he was less girly looking.

When he arrived home, I didn't open his box for at least five hours, because I was worried sick I wouldn't like him! But as soon as I opened him up, it was love at first sight. Even though he was naked and bald, I could tell he was different from any other doll I had ever owned, and very shortly after that I knew I had made the right choice for me. He was my perfect first BJD.

So, to answer the question, "What are your personal reasons for choosing your first doll?", my answer is, "He wasn't girly." LOL!! He was also my rebound boy, since I purchased him as a direct result of passing up Kohya.

    7. He just looked so lonely on the company's page...

I'd actually never intended on owning a BJD. I liked them, and liked looking at pictures of them, but never had any plan to buy one, until I saw that boy. Him, I just had to have.
So I always say I didn't choose him - he chose me.

    8. Max V.1, an Obitsu Sheba, was chosen because I loved his face for the character and how poseable and durable Obitsu were. (Mainly because my floors are not kind to anything dropped on them, and I'm awfully clumsy.) I loved that version every moment he was here, but regretfully the exact same material that made him so durable also made him impossible to take places for me (a big problem since he was my favie~) because it stains so easily. So he got reshelled in resin, as a sculpt I actually picked as his V.2 backup at the time I had purchased him. XD

    9. My first doll was a BlueFairy TF Jasmine girl, and it's funny that someone mentioned that they decided against getting BlueFairy because of clothing options because my Jasmine is easily the easiest to shop for of my dolls! I always seem attracted to the uniquely-sized or -proportioned dolls, so BFs in comparison are web-shopping heaven XD .

When I became interested in the hobby, I can even remember clearly how that happened, but the first doll I fell in love with was an SD-sized girl from Luts, 'Blanchet' I think. I loved her so much, but the size wasn't right and I didn't like the body, so I gave up on that. I did a lot more research, based on a complex algorithm that seemed to eliminate 90% of doll companies I came across, and finally settled on BlueFairy.

I drew up a 'doll plan' and first decided on getting Xiao, Niky, and Emilie; I even made a wallpaper with them for my desktop to motivate me XD ! Somehow that plan eventually changed, and they came out with the new sculpt 'Jasmine' that I fell in love with, hard. New wallpaper, new stalk-victim. She's still my favorite BF sculpt.

I eventually spoke about it with my father, waited a few months longer (I think), and nearing Christmas-time I bought Jasmine as a present for myself XD . Still have her today.

I chose her because I loved her face, especially her eyes and her slightly mischievous little smile, but if that were the only reason, there would have been tons more candidates out there online. I first had to choose a company, because I wanted a matching set, and I needed to love their boy bodies, their girl bodies, the face sculpts necessary for each doll concept, their jointing, resin colors, reputation, etc.. I'm picky about bodies and joints especially, so that eliminated a lot.

    10. My first doll (and currently only doll) was a kind of hard decision. I join DoA and stalked the company threads for ages to find out the reputations, waiting periods etc, about some of the well known companies.

While doing this, I was also looking at all the dolls that they offered. The first doll I wanted to buy was a Dream of Doll Luke Version 1. But he is way to pricey for me, and so I decided that he will become my goal.

I wasn't too sure if i would even like this hobby, so I decided I would get a doll under $300, and then get more if i really do enjoy it. I considered getting a Fairyland Pukipuki Madeline, but again decided against it, as she was too small. As cute and adorable as she is, I just couldn't imagine making clothes for her, as i knew i would want to do with any doll i bought.

So after ruling out too many dolls to count, for their size, for their price, the weird shape of their eyes, for looking to evil, or too girly, I eventually made up my mind.

I got a Dreaming Doll (IMPdoll) Bobo (though even before i bought her i KNEW i would change her name) as she was big enough to craft clothes for, but not to big to store or carry around with me, and because her expression is just so sweet and cute without being over the top.

I fell in love with her as soon as I saw the pictures of her, and though i kept browsing for quite some time, i found myself always coming back to her.

I've only had her for about a month and a half, and already i've made her two dresses, a shirt, overalls, two hats, two small wooden bookshelves, a bed with mattress sheets and pillows and bought her more tiny stuffed toys than she no doubt needs.

I am also in the process of searching for her older brother... who I know is going to be msd sized.

    11. I'm not sure my reasoning was sound but they worked well thankfully.
I had been looking for awhile at dolls and as much as I loved that it was impossible to imagine the price and as an introduction to a hobby how could I just pay 800 something right off the bat and I didn't know what sizes I'd like or anything. I knew nothing of my preference. Then I came upon impldoll and I realized I loved their sculpts and they werent as expensive. They were still kinda expensive. Then came the questions to myself is it reliable and not a hoax do I have the expendable income for this purchase ex cetera. I could answer the second not the first so I asked a fellow doll friend who trusted the company so I followed through. I figure I'll just keep getting bigger and bigger dolls till I find one I'm the most comfortable with but who knows.

    12. Funnily, my first (and only, so far) doll wasn't the first doll I wanted. Initially, I really really really wanted to get a DD Saber since, well, she's awesome. A year or two after that I started getting iffy over the anime faces and started venturing forth into the more realistic faces. However, I just couldn't find one that clicked with me. It would always be "the nostrils are huge" or "the eyes are too alksdjaljs" or something weird, stopping me from actually getting one.

And then (finally!) I fell in love <3. Earlier this year, someone in one of my facebook groups was asking for a place to buy a dollfie and among the replies came up "migidoll". So extremely curious, since I've never even heard of migidoll, I checked out their site and LO AND BEHOLD there he was, perfect to meeeeeee so I kinda couldn't sleep for a while trying to resist since I had no funds at the time XP I couldn't handle it so I decided to wait like a month and a half, and if he was still available then I would beg for him as a birthday present. So yeah. Now, I'm still hopelessly obsessed over him and I don't think I'll be stopping anytime soon X3

    13. I went for a Kinda cheap, small first doll because it would be a good way to ease into the hobby and if I didn't like her then it didn't really matter as much as if I had bought a big $500-$1000 doll.

    14. I bought my first doll because she was the cheapest on my wish list and she would get to me really fast and so I'd have a doll while I wait for the more pricey ones on my list.

    15. I had two reasons. One: she's a Yo-SD, and I'm a very short person, so she was the perfect "starter doll". Two: she was (and still is) the cutest sculpt I had ever seen.

    16. Well, I had been fascinated by BJDs for a few months, and I was debating wether to get an Iplehouse Elin or a PukiFee as my first. Then I saw a RS Ju being sold at another forum, and fell in love. After doing a little research on her size, the company etc, I pretty promptly decided to purchase her. So she was a complete impulse buy, and a pretty damned good one.

    17. I chose him because he was so versatile. He could look like a bad boy, a good boy, a teen, an adult, a child, a hot chick, or a humble girl. And I loved that about him. But the funny thing was for the longest time I didn't know what his sculpt was. I would see him but never know it was him because everyone gives their dolls different face-ups and once I found out that all these dolls where the same sculpt but just with different face-ups I instantly fell in love with him.
There are other sculpts that can take on different faces like he can but he was the first doll that I encountered that did. So I guess you could say he's my bias.

    18. I knew from highschool that i wanted a bjd, one of my best friends and her sister both had an 07 Nanuri doll and i knew that i wanted to have one also. so now i have a floating head and saving up for his body ^^.

    19. I don't know if this counts because I haven't been able to afford her, but I can absolutely relate to falling in love with a doll. The first time I saw Asellsa Raspberry, I knew I had to have her. The beautiful pouty lips, the gorgeous eyes, the lovely hands and curvy, womanly hips. I stare longingly at the pictures I've collected on my computer almost daily. She has so much potential, and inspires me. Eventually I'll get my hands on her, but it breaks my heart knowing I probably won't be able to make the next two preorders. I'll probably have to get her second-hand.

    20. LOL This is an easy question for me; she was cheap and new. My first tiny was overstock in a dealers shop that was cleaning out the old and getting ready for the new. I got my Bobobie for a fantastic bargain price. And, it also helps that I wasn't at all picky about Who was my first just that she/he was cute and didn't cost me my firstborn! I'll never regret that first purchase! :D
