Your reasons for choosing your first doll?

Jun 21, 2011

    1. I bought my first bjd about 4 years ago. I searched a lot of websites wanting a cute boy to be Aoyagi Ritsuka from the manga Loveless. I wanted MSD size, but I also wanted him to have beautiful joints and hands and a perfect manicure. So I ended up getting an SD - a 62 cm Angell Studio Andrea.

Unfortunately I got a wrong size wig and clothes (being a noob & trying to translate sizes in Japanese on Y!Japan), and when he arrived I found his actual size kind of scary! So for 3 years I left him alone unhappily in a drawer... poor guy! Then not so long ago I got my second bjd, and when I was comparing them I fell in love with my original doll. (His joints are SO NICE, and his resin is SO SMOOTH...) Now he has an extensive wardrobe and lots of wigs, so I'm sure he's happy.

    2. I was pretty sure my first would be from Volks, since they were the first BJDs I saw and one of the only big companies at the time. I found Elfdoll soon after, though, and saw Hazy and instantly fell so in love with her realistic look that I scrapped my plans to save for her and bought her 2 days later. Haha.

    3. I simply couldnt resist her :P
I been looking at dolls for a long time now, and even if i found some really beautiful this one (on layaway right now) was irresistible, and as she was an event doll i couldnt resist it and couldnt let the opportunity go, so i went ahead and odrered her :3

    4. I did my decision by my heart and I think it's a kind of usual story here. Several years I was just waching, but no one doll seemed the one I needed. I thought "it's nice one, but do I really need it?" But when i saw IOS Chaos i understood how someone could eagerly want an exact doll. It was expensive, it was irrationaly and it was absolutely necessary. So, we met and I'm happy to have this gorgeous creature beside me.

    5. I'm choosing my first one (and I think I've finally decided who I want first... I think) and the main factors for me are size (it must be teeny tiny, the smaller the better), poseability (from my reading, I've found that the tinies are often lest poseable, but I don't want to lose too much of that), and of course, a lovely face.
For me I seem to be drawn to faces that are very child-like, but also have a very strong character.

    6. My sister and I spent ages picking our first dolls...at first we both liked a lot of different dolls in a lot of sizes, but my sister decided that SD was the only size worth having (I have since found out that the idea of scale she had for an MSD was more like realpuki) and we both picked dolls from the same company. Both these dolls have since been sold and I now finally have an MSD girl who I love.

    7. Because a friend of mine gave me a link, and he was just SO beautiful that I had to buy him! Even though I had planned to get an other doll as my first, but he's gonna be my 6th doll now.. :3

    8. For my soon-to-be first doll, the face/sculpt of the doll really matters to me and the price. ^^

    9. I've lurked in the community for years not thinking I'd find a doll that spoke to me but I finally found a Soom Monzo second hand and I love him so very much.

    10. I had already picked out the doll I thought I wanted, then I managed to stumble onto Limhwa Half-Elves
I ended up comparing her to EVERYTHING and would keep a separate tab on my computer just in case I wanted to look at her

    11. My first doll (part of her is with me, part of her is still on its way) will be an Unoa Lusis hybrid. The first thing I looked at when looking for my first bjd was the size. I decided I wanted an MSD for my first size, because I wanted a relatively big doll, but not the price tag of most SD-sized dolls. Also, I didn't want to jump into getting a doll THAT big for my first. Another important factor was price. I wanted to stay around $300 or under for my first doll (not including extras). At first, I thought the Unoa Lusis was unattainable because I didn't know where to get headbacks, so I couldn't make a hybrid. I spent a lot of time debating between dolls. I was pretty much deciding between a DC Bella or a DIM Larina, when I decided that I NEEDED to get an Unoa Lusis. Whenever I saw her on tumblr or other websites, I would think "Oh, that's a gorgeous doll, what sculpt is she?" only to realize that it was the unoa lusis again. This happened until I was able to recognize her sculpt whenever I saw it. I've liked pretty much ever unoa lusis I see, as well as the blank faceplate. So, back to the headbacks, I did some serious googling (not realizing I could have just asked on here) and finally found 3 sources for headbacks, and decided on Buff for my headback. Now, not only could I afford the doll I wanted most, but she was actually CHEAPER than the alternatives I almost chose over her. For her body, I just wanted something that matched resin tone and proportions, and that was relatively cheap, so I decided on the Dollndoll diamond body. The body was not nearly as important to me as the face. Sorry for the super-long rambling post, haha. ^^;;

    12. I really wanted to find a certain look for my first SD. I didn't have any clothes, shoes, eyes or wigs for an SD, and so I looked high and low for an SD doll that had the look I liked, came with a nice wig and most importantly - a nice full set outfit and shoes, as I knew this would be all she would have to wear for a while!! I didn't want to pay a fortune for a basic nude doll and have to shell out more money for all of the extras at the same time. Now I can take my time buying more wigs, clothes and shoes without breaking my bank account. If I feel like changing something as simple as her eye colour, it's not a huge expense. I think that I lucked out finding Dreaming Doll. I think the price was great for all that I got! I love my Molly. She was a perfect "first" SD doll.

    13. My sister was into BJD's before I was, but she knew that I also liked them so she decided that for our birthday last year she would get me a BJD! (I got her custom MLP plushies, in case you were wondering lol) She sent me a bunch of links to different companies and dolls, and while we had originally planned on getting a Puki-sized doll for a character of mine that is in the same story as her Puki, when she sent me a link to Angell-Studio and I saw Momo, I fell in love. She was perfect! So we ordered her with default face-up and wig because I wanted her JUST LIKE THAT! lol well, she has different eyes which is fine, and I'm glad we didn't get the fullest, because those clothes just don't suit her style at all.

    14. I spent nearly two years researching, looking at people's dolls at cons, and asking lots of questions before I started shopping for real. I joined DoA long before I bought my doll just to do more research! I finally decided on a place to buy first (DDE) because I had had bad experiences buying things from Asia in the past (weddings suck). They really got me with layaway options to boot! Then I decided on body types I liked (MSD, mature) and I knew I wanted an elf. So, then it really came down to liking a face. Google really helped here, as I searched though people's flicker pictures of their versions of the same doll (other people take much better photos than Bobobie!). I finally decided that Mei channeled the inner forest elf I was looking for, and bought her once my tax return came in in 2012.

    15. I believe I bought my first doll in 2004/2005? I didn't know much about BJD then, and I had fallen for CH Petite Ai dolls. I bought the first release of Sariel. When they had originally announced Sariel, there were no preview photos just that she would be a new face mold. I waited up all night for her photo, and when she was finally for sale I felt I only had a minute to decide if I really wanted to buy her or not. I decided to go for it, and I loved her to bits!

I can still remember the excitement and wonder I felt when I opened her box for the very first time. I remember the surprise I felt at how heavy and BIG she was! It really made me wonder how much larger the SD sized BJD were! I have sadly since sold her due to some life issues, but when I re-entered the hobby my tastes had changed slightly and I have since moved on to different companies.

I still think fondly of my Sariel, especially when I get a new doll in the mail. I still get that excitement and wonder at how beautiful BJD are in person. However, I don't think I will want to own another Sariel though she is still special and quite beautiful to me. There are other tinies, MSD & eventually SD sized dolls I hope to own.

    16. When I was choosing the first doll, I had two goals: to find doll who looks like my game character (I'm play in the text RPG), and, because I had strong doubts that this hobby took me for a long time, to choose a quite 'budget' doll. In general, Resinsouls suited for me by the second parameter. But when I saw An's promo, I realized that the boy was just looking for someone who take him from there! And then I had no doubt.
Now, three years later, I once more understand that I had a right choice. Eugene settled down very good and brought after himself another dolls, at this moment he is waiting a friend from the same RPG.

    17. I wanted a doll that wasn't too common, but had a beautiful face. At first I was going to buy Minifee Shushu, then I say Minifee Dark Elf Soo and just fell in love with her! I just had this moment where I was like "yup she's the one"

    18. I still remember the first doll that I wanted so badly...T_T ...
It was an SD "Spinel" of SOOM..... I was watching and watching over and over again the pictures on the official web... T_T

But he was too expensive for me... and few weeks later I totally abandoned the idea to get an SD...
It ended up that it was not me who choose the first doll... it was HER who choose me! Infact ,I got a message from the first owner of my doll, that wanted sell her to me...
since I was searching a less expensive doll... and she was in Italy... when I saw her photos I wanted her without doubts! I was lucky that she was like a doll I liked some time before Spinel!

    19. Hmmm.. My reason for getting a doll was the fact that I had always loved dolls when I was younger, but never had the liberty of owning them as my parents didn't like it. Now that I am older and there's not too many restrictions on me, I am given the freedom to explore the hobbies that I like.

I was first introduced to BJDs when a friend set a DoD Delphine as her profile pic. When I asked her what it was, she showed me the site, and from there I fell in love with BJDs. But back then I couldn't afford it. Only this year when I kinda sheepishly asked my parents if I could purchase it (and with a wee bit of persuading) did they give in to me and let me order a BJD~

      I had just ordered a Twin-B (girl's body) from DoD~ Can't wait for her to arrive~ <3 Loving her so much already~

    20. It was fashion doll magazines that introduced me to BJDs and I had looked at Luts and Volks but it was Soom whose website I was enchanted by. My original inclination wasto get one of the Volks more personalizable WTG dolls, but they didn't pull at my heart the way Soom's Gem lines did. I don't know anyone who has a BJD and have never been to a meet so those weren't factors. When Soom had their Xmas kit event the tan mini gem girl I'd been eyeing was available for less than $200 and I pounced. I have never done a face-up before and got her blank, nor have I ever assembled a doll before. It was the size and the potential (and the less intimidating cost) that caught me. So now I'm waiting for my first BJD to come home. Putting her together and doing her face-up will be an adventure.
