Your reasons for choosing your first doll?

Jun 21, 2011

    1. The most important for me was the overall look :). I wanted a guy who matched a existing character of mine and who had a more realistic look when it came to proportions. Let's just say it didn't take me that long before I found the right doll for me. I did however look through one seriously long list of companies and their dolls before deciding to make sure I didn't rush into just buying the first doll I found that I liked :sweat. But in the end I came back to the company and type of doll I had gotten fond of right at the beginning.

    2. I had actually been browsing a lot of Korean BJD sites, and thought, eh, a doll is a doll. But then I found my Luna on Iples website. I thought, wow, she is just gorgeous! But 600 for a doll? (queue the Yao Ming face meme). But I just couldn't get her out of my head. So I kept visiting the site over and over, and going through all the clothing that the had her modeling, and one day it dawned on me...I was in love with the stupid doll! So I schemed and waited for the opportune moment. I quietly saved and each time I added more money to my savings, I tried to talk myself out of it. No luck. Finally the day came! IPLEHOUSE SOLD OUT OF HER! What?! Why?! How?! I mourned the loss of my Luna and desperately tried to contact Iple. Finally I figured out the Q and A, and whined about the malicious attempt at removing her from the EID line. As it turns out, they were inventorying their stock to sell out at a reduced cost. They had redesigned their EID line to make the EID dolls more...hmm...correct? Well, perhaps...appealing, yes, that is the word. So to make a long story short, I had to, had to, HAD TO have her. When they released her again for sale their was no turning back. I had made up my mind.

    3. Calivano, your reply made me smile!! It was a very sweet story to read!
Really, I'm happy that you got the doll you wanted for so long!
It is the best feeling in the world, to finally get what we have been "obsessing" about ^^

    4. There are a few reasons I bought my Anthony from Doll Leaves as my first BJD. I bought him during the spring event so he comes with a super adorable event cat that I HAD to have. He also came with jointed hands, an $80 value $_$ however I would not have bought him if I didn't think he fit into at least one of my characters. There were several other dolls I was looking at that I like a lot more. And in fact I was thinking about getting an MSD for my first doll thinking it would be easier to manage. But alas there were no MSDs in Doll Leaves that make me go 'wow I need to have that' and after looking at Anthony for a couple days (at first I thought he was too big) I decided he needed to come home to me :) Unfortunately I have to make a few more payments for that to happen :sweat

    5. My first 2 were pukis. I bought them because they were cute and cheap and TINY! I love small things so they were a perfect start. I can't really remember if I had any kind of emotional connection with them though. After that was when I started designing characters and wondering about other dolls to get...

    6. Well my first "Doll" most be the head I bought a few weeks ago.
I was sure that I would connect better with a male than a female, but I didn't like any of the male heads or sculps anywhere i looked.
Found this clean head suited for a 70cm body, so I bought him :P
He's VERY masculine, and that's what I was looking for.

But as you know he is not yet a complete doll, nor will he be for a while :)

    7. Honestly, I bought my first doll because he was being sold at DragonCon, and I finally caved. I had seen this one BJD booth for two years running, and I was interested in BJDs but hadn't done much (read: any) research. I picked one I liked and asked if they had him in other colors, etc. The very kind and VERY busy people at the booth dug around in all their boxes until I had something I adored and gave me clothes to go with him. He was an impulse buy and he is not the greatest, but I was so stupidly pleased to carry his box around the convention that he was and still is worth it.

    8. First and foremost, I was looking for mature dolls because the characters I had in mind for them are mature. I liked the size of MSDs but a lot of them just didn't have the faces I was looking for, so I poked around the SD sections of BJD websites. The moment I saw my doll I was just like, "Oh! That's him!" It took about two years for me to actually get him, but now that I have him I am so happy I saved for him instead of settling for a smaller, less expensive doll. I already know which doll I want to get next. For me, it just clicks when I see the doll. There are many gorgeous dolls out there, but I always know instantly when I've found a doll that I have to have :]

    9. hmmm...
      1) Budget - cos already feel guilty spending so much on a doll (^^;)
      2) The face... I'm quite specific/ fussy about this... cos basing it on a character. This was very hard to find... especially the eyes shape.
      - kept staring and staring at pics of dolls and comparing @_@|||
      3) Body - didn't want SD looking, but didn't want a big doll... so had to look for a semi matured tiny/ mini body - proportions wise. So she can wear the type of clothes I'd like her to wear!

    10. The things I look for when buying a doll?

-the face: sure it's the most important part for me. XD
Falling in love with the face normally applies to everyone right? and I was totally in love with DollClans' Jaquer.
And first thing that comes to mind is "He would be a great husband!!" (what the efffffff hahaha)

-body: I usually focus on the abs. I purchase only boys so yeah, boys with nice 6 pack is quite a thing. *drools*

    11. I got my first doll for congratulation myself to enter college!
My type choice is the doll have calming looking,
that can let me want to smile when I look at the doll!
And the size choice is tiny one good than the large one for my first one.
Because the small size will more easier take out to joint friend's meeting!

    12. I want a Soul Doll Soul Kid as my first doll. I'm going to be getting her when my mom is done recovering.
I figure it will be a good start for me. Not too big, not too small. I can begin learning the ins and outs of BJD owning. I love the face and body sculpt, it took me a really long time to find a combination of face/body from the same company that I liked and the cost won't be too high for my first 'toe in the water'.

My importance is body, then face, then price.

    13. I had been looking for the perfect doll almost a year ago. I had been looking but didn't fall in love with any of them! But one day I went onto MintOnCard to look at some of their dolls. I went to OnlyDoll and looked at what they had and I found ChiYao. It wasn't love at first sight but I kept going back to look at her and she grew on me and I came to love her. That's my Pepper for you lol.

    14. I fell in love with Iple's sculpts when I saw a pic of Frank's Iplehouse Eva. Before that I didn't know BJDs could look so realistic. (I have since figured out that realism is THE thing with me.) When I took a closer look at Iplehouse's dolls something fell into place, and I knew which characters I wanted to shell and consequently which one to start with. I'd been looking at doll pics trying to decide on one for ages, but they were all beautiful and nothing more ... Eva was beyond beautiful, but still not quite right for my Chris ... and then Iple released Stella. Instant love - this was my girl! So she had to come first, even though I had decided in the meantime that one day I'd need a Bianca ... and an Eva, too. By now I have them all, Bianca made it home this very week. :aheartbea But when I knew which story to "dollify", I knew Chris had to be the first, so I let Bianca's Limited Edition pass and waited for Iple to release the perfect sculpt. :)

    15. Jany +1

My very first doll was an Iplehouse Eva. I really fell in love with her face. It was so... human like ! Compared to other companies, it was the most realistic I saw until that moment. I other companies, for me it was always to much like a manga character : men too girly, body to thin, silicon breast (I mean, come on, the doll look like she's 16 and she has breast like Pamela ?)... But Iplehouse... I still obsessed with this company, I don't even look elsewhere. I might miss other very interesting model, but I don't have butterflies in my stomach when I look at other companies...

    16. I have a doll I dream of having. it's very expensive, so I see it as a distant goal. With this said, you will understand my reasons for getting my first doll.

I was browsing online stores, rather desperate because I liked no other doll beside the super expensive one I dream of. Then I came across the perfect first doll for me -- a beautiful face, very nice resin and a reasonable price. I love the doll, even if he isn't the one I dream of, because it's a beautiful doll that I have grown fond of. I am learning how to sew clothes on him and basically how to handle a BJD. I think it was love at first sight. :)

    17. It was all about price. I found out I could have a pair of BJD minis for about $200. Much less than I had seen previously. Someone in my family offered to pay half and so I jumped on that. The irony is I also traded for my first whole BJD, a RS, while I was waiting on the heads for those. So now I have 3 BJD dolls, and I've spent all of about $110 on all of 3 of them so far. I do intend actually to get a RS Dai at some point or maybe a pair of SD sized dolls, but so far I think I'm happy and actually I like my cheap dolls. :)

    18. There's such a long story about my first (and currently only) doll, a DZ Yue

I'd found him five years ago after my friend had first shown me her dolls and I was so excited to get my own even though I'd have to save up for ever and half it with my mom, etc. (I was 14 at the time.) My friend had just received her newest girl from DZ and so she showed me the dealer she went through and the DZ sculpts first and I was completely infatuated, despite his $600 price tag. I drifted away from dolls after a going to a few meets, just because I wasn't anticipating getting my doll anytime soon, but just recently found a new dolly friend near me who convinced me to order him FINALLY at the beginning of this year. I say convinced but she was like, 'you have the money, get him. e v e' And voila!

He was literally just so beautiful and I'd fallen in love with his face from first look and he was really unusual at the time because his eyes were closed so I was really looking forward to his uniqueness, since I couldn't find anyone who owned him at the time (I still have only found about four people who are active on the internet at all who own him). Even with a wig that I despised in the company photos, I was just totally gone for his face sculpt and how his body looked.

    19. I had done a fair bit of shopping around for my first doll, and my second doll for that matter. The price had was one of the factors into my decision, but the real deal closer was looking at the pictures of the sculpts are falling in love with them at an instant. And your head fills with thousands of character ideas, and I could picture myself holding onto them with all the love I could possibly give to a doll.

    20. I still haven't saved up enough to purchase my first doll, but I definitely know which one I'll get: the Fairyland MNF Chloe. I know she's popular and maybe even "overrated" in some circles on the internet, but I just fell in love with the sculpt from the moment I saw her and immediately knew that I could make one of my LARP characters real, in dolly form! The Chloe sculpt just fits the character so well: beautiful, pensive, soft, and sweet.

When and if I get a second doll, it'll probably be a MNF Shushu to represent my other OC.
