Your reasons for choosing your first doll?

Jun 21, 2011

    1. Price played a pretty big role in the decision of my first doll, unfortunately. I wasn't too sure how much I would stick with the hobby, and I didn't want to spend $300+ on a doll that I would hardly even touch after the first month, so I went for a Resinsoul MSD Ya. I loved her sculpt, and Denver Doll Emporium just happened to have the body and skin tone I wanted as well, so it was kind of a "the stars aligned" scenario. A year later, I'm still very happy with her and will definitely be buying more :)

    2. I couldn't get the doll I had hoped for and with the doll fund just sitting around, I decided to spend a couple weeks looking around at all the different companies. It turned out that Dollshe stole my heart and I fell for Ausley Love. I didn't like her body however so I opted for a hybrid. I didn't save anything money wise but my budget wasn't really a concern either. I'm really happy with my first choice and I'm sure I'll love her even more when she arrives.

    3. I had been browsing around on Alice's Collection's because i finally got a job and could afford a doll, so i clicked on Doll Chateau (which quickly became my favorite company) Originally i intended to get a doll chateau: Mona, but i saw Alberta, and she was just so beautifully odd that i absolutely had to have her!

    4. I originally got mine at an estate auction (people sell dead/dying/old people things). I saw a picture of the two of them and they were absolutely adorable when I saw them online and when I got to actually touch them and see them up close I was so excited to try to get them. So they both were my first two actual bjds. I'd been looking at bjds for a few years but was in shock at the price tag and was scouring people's garage sales/ auctions for them to try and find them and my dad found them on the website for the local auction.

    5. I won't say that I made a mistake with my first doll but I know that I would do things differently if I could go back and have a do over. My first doll was a birthday present last year from my mom and aunt. I had wanted a BJD for years but felt like I could never afford one. When I found Resinsoul I automatically loved their aesthetic (I know they aren't for everyone but I love them) and even more than that I loved their prices.

When my birthday was rolling around all I wanted was a doll and so my mom and I talked it over. She thinks that BJDs are way too expensive and that it's kind of ridiculous even though she loves dolls, she's just really frugal. So she agreed on the cheapest doll that I could find that I liked, which ended up being a Resinsoul Dian.

Now I love my Dian whose name is Bilberry. When I took another look at that sculpt I realized that he would be a perfect character for one of my story lines. So I didn't just get him because he was cheap but also because he is a really wonderful character who I love. But I had no idea how hard it would be to put his look together. If I could do things over I would get a doll with a factory face up as my first doll. Because Bilberry is still face-up-less and also all in pieces in his box because I've been meaning to restring him for months XD.

My main problem is that I keep coming up with characters who are too complicated to create and he is one of the more complicated ones. So if I could do it again I would choose a more regular character and a doll that I would like with the company face up. And yet my most recent doll which I bought for myself also doesn't have a face up. *sigh* I never learn :P.

    6. As many have said it already, the price was a pretty big factor choosing my forst doll. I looked through all those pages and looked for a perfect one...and there it was, on fall sale and finally i could afford it.
It was my first bjd, so I had no experience at all, and the most important thing for me was the face expression.

    7. The price was definitely a factor, which I couldn't pass up, but I am also smitten with her face. That, and she comes with jointed hands. Can't wait to see her in person.

    8. I liked the fact that bjd's are so versatile like my LTF's, you can do much more with them, changing out eyes, wigs, hands and so on. I have a LTF Rolly and Bisou currently and am thinking of getting a bjd pet for them. They are white skin and I want to keep the same skin color, and so the pet I may get is also WS!

    9. My reasons for wanting a doll were different to many people's here I think. I didn't have a character in mind, or any sort of 'look' I was going for, I just wanted something to knit teeny outfits for, so the main thing for me was poseability. I also wanted to do her face and everything myself, so I tried to look for as many naked unpainted photos as i could find, and not be swayed by the awesome styling and faceups on many of the company websites. I looked around and found a doll I liked and could afford, but after a little research I realised the company was selling recasts, and I'd have to save up/destash some yarn to be able to afford a proper version of the dolls I liked. I looked around some more, and added half a dozen or so dolls to my amazon wishlist so i could refer back and see if any of them really spoke to me so i could decide which I was going to get. Then I saw the Magical Angels dolls, and was immediately taken by their poseability, and the fact that there were lots of naked/unpainted pictures, so i could easily see the sculpt. A little later, after reading the forums here, I found that the XM dolls at Mirodoll were made in the same factory, weren't recasts or anything dodgy, and were cheap enough that I could get one immediately without having to save or sell anything. So I ordered one on a bit of a whim late one night...and I am very glad I did, I love how well she poses, and I'm having lots of fun making her things and learning how to do her face.

I originally said when I first started that I only ever wanted one doll, just for making clothes for, I didn't want to be a collector and end up buying several. I'm trying to stick to this, but I'm not sure it'll work, as I keep seeing more and more dolls that I like, and if I had more, I could knit and sew EVEN MORE THINGS!

    10. I chose the real-life style of sculpt and the compact size at first time.

    11. He was in stock. And I was impatient. :P I love him to bits though, thank goodness!

    12. My reasons for choosing the doll that I did as my first doll was due to her being the right size, being able to order her through a UK dealer and because she was my favourite sculpt in the MSD size range anyway :) As it was going to be my first doll I didn't want anything too big or expensive (as pretty as some SD sized dolls are) and I didn't want to have to worry about the ordering process.

    13. I had this idea to do character dolls. :) and my dolls needed to be mature msd... so I went looking and I found withdoll! Not only did they have gorgeous mature msds but gorgeous tans too! I couldn't say no to myself. :)

    14. I spent a while looking through a lot of dolls, and was really close to buying a DollLeaves Maya. He was just so cute, and I loved his freckles. But then I looked through the rest of the DollLeaves msd and that all changed when I found Kira.. He just fit everything that I was looking for. And I was sold with his little smirk.

    15. Well, my reason for choosing my first doll isn't special at all. On the beginning of this hobby, I was just afraid of spending much money on first doll and feeling regret afterward because I had seen BJD only from internet, not the real one. So I chose a cheaper but quality is still nice one and sure...the one with sculpt which I like, from a German dealer (because I wasn't so sure how to order directly + paying custom). And I didn't regret at all. He is cute and I won't give up on him definitely! :)

    16. I chose Aquarius Doll Ella as my first because I have many ideas I can create with her. :) Also that she is of compact enough size and not too expensive. Perfect for me!

    17. T'was one of the first dolls I ever loved (AOD 'Yo'), and someone who lives relatively near me was selling their doll to another home, and I just loved him. Plus the fact that my mum was glad we wouldn't need to worry about shipping or customs fees. :dance

    18. Unfortunately the doll I truly want first is not available, but I will talk about her. She is based off a character I used to role play as. I actually got into these dolls because I found one that just happened to make me think of her!

    19. I'm new to DOA so this is an interesting topic for me! I'm still searching for a first doll who is the "right one". Problem is I've looked at so many different sculpts now that I'm even more confused. I suspect I will just have to jump in and find out what works for me. Good to know everyone has such unique experiences.:daisy

    20. I'm new to DOA, but I have been searching for my first doll since last year when a friend of mine's sister introduced me to the hobby. I wanted my first doll to be perfect, so naturally I had to have the perfect face.

I wanted an SD at first, but the size kind of put me off, so I searched for MSD's with a more mature face. I have been going back and forth from one company to the next trying to find the perfect doll.

But what I found first was the perfect body for my doll, a Spiritdoll smart line girl body.
I have been pining over this body, but have been looking for the right face. I gave up because I couldn't find a face I liked that fit the body, so I searched for other bodies.

Long story short I came back to Spiritdoll because their bodies are amazing, and I saw so many people with Snowdrop and her face is perfection and matches my character I came up with for my doll perfectly :D
