Your reasons for choosing your first doll?

Jun 21, 2011

    1. My first doll, Liddell from souldoll. I chose her because she looks very doll-like. Haha, is that a wired reason. Anyways I still love her a lot.

    2. When I finally decided to buy a doll, I knew that I wanted either a 27 cm or a 45 cm doll. I lurked on Junkyspot endlessly and added and deleted doll after doll from my cart. I somehow found MintOnCard and decided to look through their in stock dolls. The minute I saw the Asleep Eidolon Blueberry, I knew that she was the one for me. :)

Other dolls I had looked at included Mystic Kids Lillian, Doll Leaves Flora and Loongsoul NuanNuan.

    3. He was beautiful. Ringdoll Sol, still love that face so now I have two.

    4. It's quite spontaneous I think, because I initially aimed for a totally different sculpt. When I saw his sculpt being offered as one of LUTS events, it immediately struck me and he became my very first BJD XD I am glad I got him instead though, Kid Delf is just the right size :) The main reason being that he has a "sweet-looking" sculpt and I wanted him to have a much "alert" facial expression. The wig color and style that the company offered as the set's option is a plus for me too

    5. I picked mine because I thought the sculpt was gorgeous and I didn't know how to do my own face-ups so the company face-up was super important to me haha. I made sure I liked eeeeverything about the doll before even considering it. Ugh, it was a tough decision hahaha.

    6. First I wanted something from IOS, ( They're my favourite company) but the funds were just not there. So I decided to go simple with an Obitsu. I actually am just waiting for her in the mail, and I am just so excited. I feel confident in my decision, even if she isn't the doll for me, she a low budget doll, and that was the main factor.

    7. I originally wanted Impldoll's Mzzen but baulked at the price and size. So I looked through all the doll companies on AliceCollections (because silly me thought that was the only place you could get dolls for some reason) and I stumbled on Doll Family. I saw Star and Yue and fell in love and put them on layby pretty much immediately. They were both lovely face sculpts and decently priced.

    8. I picked 5stardoll mostly because of their good prices, and their sculpts are quite lovely. The serious face of their Edmund sculpt also fit the serious character I had in mind for my first doll, so I happily chose him as my first doll. c: Unfortunately it took me too long to decide whether to get Edmund or not so by the time I decided to, he was discontinued. Thankfully I managed to snag a blank Edmund head from DDE and bought 5stardoll's newest SD boy body to create my doll. I don't regret it; they have really nice sculpts!

    9. I picked 28M Fashion David Kuncci mostly because of his sculpt and of course that pre-order special event (Which give me discount + full christmas package). There is not enough reason to hesitate back then! XD

    10. Well I'm pretty new to the Community (even though I've been looking at dolls for about a year now)~ The story of my first doll, was when I was just browsing through doll wigs on aliexpress when I came across the most gorgeous doll in a messy 'mohair' (I think synthetic mohair) wig. However, what had me gripped was the model of said wig. He was absolutely gorgeous, and I then decided I had to somehow get him. The problem was, I had no idea what brand or model he was!

I messaged the seller of the wig frantically to find no help, as they hadn't taken the stock photos.. However, in a desperate effort to find him, I managed to trace the photo back to a taobao shop, and after creating an account, I found the chat button... I was so worried, as I had assumed the language barrier would be too great and all my frantic searching would be stopped short, but after some embarrassing translated phrases in broken mandarin and a phrase translating to 'SOS I actually speak English', I was relieved to find that the seller could in fact speak English themselves..

After a half an hour text chat with plenty of misunderstanding and confusion, I was finally linked to the doll. A RingDoll Andrew. With those two words I knew where and how to obtain this blue-eyed beauty, the next horror, was at what price..

Seeing his price, I was a little relieved that he wasn't as expensive as some dolls, but I wasn't comforted by the £300 or so pricetag, so I tried my best to busk, only for it not to go as far as I wanted.. I nearly gave up, and kept him as a pipe dream with his pretty face pinned to my pinboard in my university accommodation.

What made his arrival possible was by the work of my angel (and loving boyfriend) who had been lovely enough to buy the doll for me as a combined Christmas and Birthday present, which I had kind of guessed and initially scolded him for (spending all that money he earned on me when he could have used it for something he wanted, he really is too kind)

And here I am, waiting for him. I'm now in a place where I can get a part-time job during holidays and finally earn funds for dolls (another reason I scolded my other half) so I have another doll on the way (my last proper doll I think/ hope), but there we go~ I'm not an avid collector, as I dabble in far too many hobbies, but I feel blessed to be in a situation where I can afford to satisfy my niggling need for some BJD beauties~

    11. To be honest- I really don't know :'D Looking at his company pics now, after he moved in, I really don't see what made me buy him. I feel like they aren't even close to showing how beautiful and soft his face is. They are from an upwards angle or from far away and I also couldn't find any owners pictures I liked. So I actually got pretty worried while I was waiting. But as soon as I unwrapped his head I knew that he was a good choice.

Maybe that I didn't know how much research you usually do before you choose a doll made me buy him? That I just wanted to jump right into it with one of the tallest, male dolls available? That he came with free jointed hands?

    12. I was looking for an SD boy, and his company photos absolutely captivated me. Thinking back on it, it was probably the combination of the narrow, dramatic eyes, the sharp and prominent nose (I love his nose so much), and the lovely red wig he had in the company photos that prompted me to save for a Mystic Kids Lawrence. The day he arrived and I finally got to look at him in person, I knew I'd made the right decision :)

    13. Well the first doll I bought was from a second hand person on tumblr and the price was right the timing was right so I bought him. I liked him a lot seeing the pictures she had. But once he got here, that was when I fell in love with him. he's everything I wanted and could ask for in a first doll.

    14. Being a poor college student at the time back in 2007-2008 and wanting to get into the hobby wasn't an easy thing, especially when I knew the prices of BJDs in general. Well, long before I hit the $400-$700 isn't bad mentality. My very first doll was Wrath, my AOD Rao. :D The facial mold was perfect for the character and the price was right at the time. It hurt my wallet to take that first plunge, however I have no regrets and my collection has only grown since then.

    15. Well, I have yet to actually have my doll in my possession, but I know that I found the right one and I am planning to buy him closer to the end of the year (I'll probably cave before then and put him on layaway...). It's PoPo Doll Mu Mu (boy) and I feel like I have been talking about him all week, but I am just inlove with this doll! I have already planned what I want him to look like. I definitely know I won't regret this purchase, even though I am also a college student having money issues lol it's all worth it. Previously, when I was just considering the idea of a BJD, I had a vision in mind for making an adorable shota boy in a school uniform. I found the perfect doll too (SoulDoll Woundwort), but then I found Mu Mu and I just couldn't stop going back to him. I kept asking my friends for their opinion and they all told me that I should go with Woundwort, since he was what I envisioned my dream doll looking like, but I kept trying to back up Mu Mu and now I have come to the conclusion that I need this doll in my life.

Really, for me, I like dolls that look unique and I really love elven features, so Mu Mu definitely delivered that. Although any other doll I purchase in the future won't look remotely like Mu Mu, so my taste in dolls really range, but I suppose I always wanted a little elf boy to call my own.

    16. I bought my first doll because of one of the photos the BJD company posted in his photo story. Those upturned eyes and soulful look had me within seconds, and I couldn't help but buy him although I was sure at the time that I wanted a more adult-looking sculpt instead of a cute one. So it's probably impulse?

    17. In fact I was not going to buy a doll because I knew the prices are too high for me. But after browsing our local BJD forum I realized I can afford a nice SD boy at USD200 and that changed my mind:) The owner's photos were very sweet and so I ordered a Resinsoul Feng to start:)

    18. I bought my first BJD recently on Ebay UK. I was actually looking for posable 12th scale dolls house dolls as I collect dolls houses and came across a tiny Felix Brownie for sale and just couldn't resist her.

    19. I honestly originally got Lillyth because I thought her face was cute, especially her little smirk. To make it even better, and perhaps the ultimate deciding factor, was her price. The ebay seller had gotten her at an Estate sale and had no idea of her true value, so I got her for a steal. I was wary of getting a recast, but someone who is very familar with SOOM dolls helped me authenticate her, and she had some of her original accessories. (Faux pearl necklace and special edition eyes).

    20. I grew up admiring antique French bisque dolls. I loved the colouring, the creamy skin tone, the way they seemed to beg for attention. I imagined owning one with all these qualities, but with a softer, prettier face. When I saw Luts' Yul (moonlit song version), it looked exactly like the doll I had created in my mind as a little girl, only smaller. Unfortunately, she doesn't look quite the same in real life as she did in company photos, so I'm still searching for that dreamed-up doll. Dollmore's Lusion dolls are closer in size, but none have had her face.
