Your Surprise/Sudden/Unplanned Acquisition Stories...

Oct 21, 2007

    1. Hehe, it's funny but my most love boy doll was a bit implusive. I had been watching L-lamb's sale thread for her beautiful Miko, thinking 'love the posability! And his face :drool but too pricey for me' Then someone offered to buy just his head so I thought I'd ask for his body and look for an Arashi head later. Well, it ended up being only $150 less than her total price and since I knew it would be hard to find a head for that price I went 'screw it' and bought him complete.

    2. as many of you know there was a unoa lottery in march mabye jaunury last year, i entered for a sist and lost, but there wre a couple cancelations, they redrew and i WON!!!!!! after i was down about not winning a doll came the suprise emial I WON!! if id never checked my mom's email account i would have never known!! that was lucky!!!

    3. My bambicrony was unplanned! I was still saving for Soony :sweat
Pyrope: Omg! look at them *sends link to soli_mush* I really want one!'
Me: I know, why don't we go splits and see if we get a discount?

Yeah... now I'm in debt damn you Echo!! But you so cute :aheartbea

    4. I am really surprised how common Surprise/Sudden/Unplanned dolls are in the hobby, and how many of them are loved! It seems like this hobby would encourage people to think it through and wait, which is true in some cases, but there is a breath of spontinatity! Woot!

I forgot that my first doll was a complete surprise too! At the first Volks tea party in L.A., I was just the driver for my friend who had been a big Volks-head for a year or two. Volks let me come and participate in the events... I was just kinda looking at the one-offs seeing what was there... BAM! A Lady Sylvie one-off! I didn't know a Sylvie from a Syo, but I loved the doll's eleaborate outfit, long hair that matched mine in color, and her red eyes. Made my friend enter with me for Sylvie, but I didn't expect to win! I ~NEVER~ win. Anything. Ever. A group of 100 people can play a game with 99 prizes given out and I am the one who has nothing to carry home. I worried that, since I wasn't planning her, I'd regret buying her, but I instantly bonded with her. It is all her fault I am driving an old car but holding five dolls!

    5. My Bobobie Sprite was not planned, but she is here with me.....and now comes the planning on another doll, but still planning...

    6. My Kyouzou (Hollow Ichigo) was a total gift of the gods/good Karma/whathaveyou. :)

A friend and I were discussing how cool it would be to make a doll into Hollow Ichigo, since I already have Ichigo. Did a little searching, and found the perfect eyes: black sclera, yellow iris, black pupil. Didn't think we'd really find them, but there they were! And cheap!
But I knew the odds of me finding a white skin version of my Iple House boy (version whatever, they haven't made him for a while now), and a Soo Ri to boot, were pretty long, so I didn't buy the eyes.
But my friend did. ;) She had more faith than I.

It wasn't but a couple weeks later (certainly less than a month because she hadn't even gotten the eyes in yet), and I stumbled upon Silk selling her white skinned Soo Ri!!! The perfect counterpart to my normal skinned Soo Ri Ichigo! :o
It was such an unlooked for surprise, and such a shock to find him so soon!
I grabbed him up as soon as I figured out I could get him without getting kicked out on the street. ;)

So, he wasn't really planned, so much as dreamt about, and then serendipity dropped my greatest wish right in my lap! :dance

    7. Ahhhh, I love him!!! Congrats and be sure to post lots of pictures!

    8. I hadn't been planning to buy my Custom House Jun. I'd just bought my Narin boy, and was pretty much tapped, not to mention there was my wedding coming up. But he was the limited edition version from 2004 that made me want my own doll in the first place! :o Up until that point, I had thought some dolls were okay looking, but I hadn't been in love before.

He appeared in the marketplace, and I eyed him out for ages and ages, before the price dropped. I kinda had to go into my non-doll related savings to get him, and the rest was put on credit, but I'm glad I did. I don't think I would have gotten another chance like that. :D

    9. Trust me, I know the feeling, the game with 100 play and 99 go out with prizes and I'm left with nothing. When I go to a Dolpa and find a one off I want, I can't get my hopes up. I won't win.

Most of mine are unplanned. I thought for sure after losing out in the mad dash for Elf El 06 I would never get him. So when he was offered again, I was surprised I managed to snag him, due to having dialup. He was wanted, but definately unplanned!

    10. So many of my dolls have been unplanned, they were just ones I fell in love with at first sight & if I had the money I'd buy them. Only 2 turned out to not stay.

One of my best buys though was my Dollmore Lillis Liv. Somebody on another board posted her for sale. At that point I'd never even heard of her but when I saw her photo she just looked so sad that I couldn't resist & rationalized her purchase because her price was so low & a lot of extras were included figuring I could just split everything up & resell it. Well, the minute I took her out of the box I knew she wasn't going anywhere. I popped in some new eyes & she completely came alive. She's still my sad doll & she doesn't seem to be a popular doll but I absolutely love her & her character has become an important part of my little universe.

    11. My original plans were to save up two grand and go off to the LA Sumika to get Morgan and Sinclair, two FCS concepts I'd had for months now.

Then I take a look at the ridiculous price difference between Volks International and Volks LA for standard model SDs, and realize Elena was the perfect headmold for Tomoe, another unhomed doll concept of mine.

... some wheedling later, I get permission from my husband to wreck the budget a bit and order an Elena from Volks International. She's confirmed but not shipped yet...

And I've postponed my LA Sumika trip to Spring Break. (The money isn't the problem, not with me working overtime like I am now - it's the physical time I'd have to take off to go to LA from NC.)

    12. Rhiannon fits under this. I had been wanting a doll for months and I told my mom once I finished CNA classes I was going to get me my Too and Bee-A set. Well unexpectedly I was joking with her that I found a cheaper girl that was just as pretty and while showing her pictures she was "why not just get her with a face up and in a few days order her?" Needless to say I sat there shocked and kept double checking with her to make sure it was okay and well yeah I got my little girl as an unexpected college grad gift.:)

    13. xD;; Stanley-Vladimir was actually... xD; The limited Kirill on DOD had come out so randomly and I saw they were vampires. It was quite interesting to try and convince my mum to let me get him, but in the end, it worked. He's definitely my unexpected boy, but I'm still waiting for him to come home : )

    14. Haha, a few of my dolls were unplanned!

My Elfdoll Lydia's head was a birthday present to me (surprise!), and I later got her a body. I wasn't planning on my Ark, but someone offered him to me and it was love at first sight. I hadn't even thought about getting a Yo-SD but when I saw Ayumu he fit one of my characters perfectly and I knew I had to take him home.

And my latest surprise was my Unoa Zero girl. XD I thought I wasn't going to win her in the lottery at ALL (I actually had planned to stop buying dolls for a very long while after my Leeke twins) so it was quite the shock to discover I had won her!

    15. Haha I can understand that completely! That's exactly how it was when I saw Lu-Wen! Why oh why must Luts tempt me so? :...(

    16. My incoming Lu-wen was an absolutely unexpected purchase. I´ve always had in mind several characters I wanted to have in BJD, but never thought of having a doll for this.
In August I went on a trip when I had no chance to get a computer, so when I came back home and entered Luts website I found that gorgeous boy staring at me. That was the moment I decided Lu-Wen was MADE for my character, Lu-Wen and no other,. As it was limited I had a sudden urge to get him. So that was totally unplanned.

In fact my first girl was a surprise acquisition too, as my first choice had always been a DoT Shall. That was the doll I had decided to be my first step into BJD world. But then I found Eithelnen´s head (DES) on ebay and I just knew it, she had to be mine. XD

    17. Two dolls weren't really planned. Although I was thinking about my story and found out something was missing. I need a few more characters to be a little more versatile and tell the story from different points of view. But I wasn't planning in buying a new doll soon, because I did not really know which one to buy.

... and then Raouken sold both her Gomidoll Iru's. Man, I loved those little faces the moment she'd got them and now they would be gone. Knowing there was only a véry small chance in finding one of them again I bought one of them. (funny part is, the Iru's would've been Oracles in my story.. Timothy's character turned out to be a flawed one)

Only a month later Esthy showed her pictures of Peroth and I was blown away. Since I had already started saving for my future Williams, I had enough money to buy him, as he was perfect for the easily agitated, not to smart young man I had in mind. And now I have my second character sitting next to me (only needs a body though).

    18. Several of my dolls were uplanned or impulse buys, especially the MNF Elf Shiwoo twins. When Luts released them, I just had to order them! Most recently, I ordered a body for one of my floating heads (who is NS), and the body that arrived is white skin. Rather than going through the hassle of sending back a perfectly decent body, I took it as a sign and ordered another head for her. =P Poor NS head will have to wait a little longer.

    19. Raphael, my Latidoll Oracle M, was definitely a surprise, and he's definitely staying! :aheartbea

Some of you who may know this story from Arrival Gallery will have to forgive me for gushing about this again. :sweat

When he came out in July I think my keyboard suffered from drool overload. I wanted him so badly. I didn't have the money for him though, as I was still paying off Caterina, my first doll. I accepted him as a loss, and hoped that someday I could pick him up secondhand, or buy a regular M, since it's basically the same without the elf ears.

My birthday is October 23, tomorrow actually! :o Anyway, we celebrated a bit early at my mother's because of work scheduling, and on the 12th, I found out that all this time, they had been hiding Oracle from me at her house! (We can't get packages at our apartment.) They sat me down and told me to close my eyes, and then sat that huge black box on my lap. I was so surprised, I started crying, something I rarely do. I was just so touched that they'd gone through so much trouble to get a doll for me--I have never had such an expensive gift--and keep it a secret since JULY! They are horrible at hiding things, so it was just an incredible experience. I think my mom got a bit teary-eyed too at seeing me so happy.

At any rate, my hands were shaking so bad I didn't get many pictures that night that didn't come out blurry. You can see the ones that I did take here, though.

    20. So far Sarah is my only planed doll. Vincent came with Sarah we ordered her during the first Na-Nu-Ri event and I was almost halfway to saving for His body but then Luts released there honey line and I just couldn’t resist little Pudding I had exactly enough money for her (with the free shipping ;) ) and I’ve wanted a doll that’s about Yo size for a year now and now I’m waiting for my little girl.
