Your Surprise/Sudden/Unplanned Acquisition Stories...

Oct 21, 2007

    1. Sane, my Volks SD Mimi, was an unplanned impulse buy. X3

I'd been looking at her on the site, thinking, "She's so cute...I wonder if I'll see her in CA when I go for my trip?"
I was attending AX this year with a friend and her aunt, and we'd planned a trip to the Volks LA store. I had really liked Mimi and thought about getting her but didn't think I'd drop the money at the store....
I asked the manager if they had any Mimis left. They only had one; a two-year-old former display model that they'd placed back in her box. She was a bit stained from clothing but they cleaned her for me ^^ I picked out a cute outfit for her and a wig, and BAM; she was mine. I was trembling as I paid for her, smiling and guilty at the same time. X3
Then, as we were walking towards the car, my friend 'forgot' her cell phone and she went back in to get it; a couple moments later, she came back out with a Volks bag containing a CUTE CUTE CUTE Monochrome Lolita outfit! ^^ I actually like the outfit better than the one that I bought for Sane...... One day, I'll get shoes to go with it XD
I was stunned at my friend's great generosity (we all know those outfits aren't cheap @_@) and I cherish that outfit. ^^
That whole experience--the impulse, the love at first sight, the generosity of my friend--imprinted itself on my mind. I will never let go of Sane because of that! :D

    2. My SDC sweet dreams Kaede was an impulse buy. I had heard that the Volks Akihabara showroom was having their dolpa after event a month later than the other stores due to renovations, and at the time I was only living about half an hour by train away. I went there to see if I could get a MSD outfit and ended up coming home with Kaede.

    3. Avery.. xD a cp bory from another doa user -- very very spontanious decision xD (and I don't regret it at all <3)

    4. I recently had an unplanned acquisition. I was browsing the marketplace and stumbled onto a sales thread for a Rosette Armeria. She'd had a slight bit of damage (a chip under her bust), and so was a very reasonable price. And I just suddenly decided that I had to have her. Luckily, the seller was in the same country as me and I could afford to pay in full right away, so I had her home within a week. And I absolutely adore her and am thrilled I took made that spur-of-the-moment decision :aheartbea

    5. Chie, my new Leekeworld girl!

I have been planning to get my floating head a body for a literal year now, but I decided to check Leeke's website for new wig options and fell in love with their limited art girl on accident. Say goodbye to those body plans!

    6. I had a sudden increase of 6 dolls in the span of a month. 2 were given to me as birthday presents. 1 was a LE Doll that I saw and just had to have, bought on the spot. 1 I bought for a friend who didn't have the money for the doll at the time, she has since bought the doll from me and it's left the 'family'. The last 2 were given to me from someone sort of leaving the hobby. But it was a bit of a shock to have so many dolls join my doll family in such a short time frame when I had slowed down on buying and had a large family already. Sort of spurred me into getting rid of some dolls, just to have more space.

    7. My unplanned doll was semi-unplanned. You see, back in January, I decided to get my first BJD, so I was planning on buying a doll, but the doll I got was unplanned. I spent a LOT of time researching sculpts and what-not, and finally decided on an Asleep Eidolon MSD. Then, I decided to save up at least half of the money I needed to buy her before actually putting in my order, which was going to take me at least 3 months or so.

Come February, I noticed that a lot of events were going on. Since I was really, really new to the hobby, I didn't know what an event was, just that it was a good time for buying a doll. Initally, I was simply going to wait for an Asleep Eidolon event, but curiosity got the best of me, so I decided to check out the Doll Family-A event just to see what this whole "event" thing was about. I clicked on the first SD girl I saw and was AMAZED buy the deal I saw! After some calculations, I realized it would be cheaper to get an SD with a face-up from Doll Family than it would be to get a face-up-less MSD from Asleep Eidolon, plus I would get a free doll! I looked at the doll I clicked on and decided that I liked her face. A few days later, I had her ordered an on layaway.

I'm still so very pleased with my "impulsive" purchase. My Anneke is so beautiful and makes me really happy!

    8. I ordered my first Iplehouse by accident. XD I was torn between getting my DC girl Beth (nYiD Aria) or my YiD boy Brent (Andrew mold) first because I loved them so much. For all intents and purposes, they're "twins" (long story x.x). Anyway, on an MMO where I had built both character I had really come to love playing Brent a little more and was leaning toward getting him first. Anyway, it was December and Iple was having special for their Doll Choice. I logged in and decided to "price" Beth (face up A, peach skin, mobility joint). I was really planning on a layaway. Well, I clicked "checkout" and kept clicking because I didn't see a layaway option. (I hadn't read the fine print about that...) Suddenly I see "Grand Total is..." and realized the doll was no longer in my cart. Then I see in my junk mail something new and it was a confirmation from Iple on the purchase of a new doll. I almost melted down from anxiety. I panicked and called one of my friends who has ordered a lot of Iple who said I could cancel in three days time without much hassle. After thinking it though, I decided that I had the funds squirreled away and since she was technically created first, I was going to get her first. Put the payment in and two/three months later, she arrived home safe and sound. I always joke that was her making the decision for me. XD She was bound and determined not to let Brent be first. XD The funniest part is, when I picked her up, I almost had another heart attack because I worked at the time and she was sent to a friend's. The mailman didn't know they were home and left a pink slip, and it looked like she had almost been sent back to Korea (I cried, I really did). Anyway, I managed to make it to the post office where I met my friend's mom and we got the doll together. The employees there asked if I had ordered a kitchen sink. XD Then I drove home and had my first box opening. :D So all around, it was a terrifying and exhilarating experience. xD

    9. I recently had an unplanned and sudden acquisition although I don't have it just yet. As soon as I finished Souji's main outfit and I think, "YES JUST ONE MORE AND I'M DONE", Sadol releases the set of kendo uniform and gear totaling $505.00 and limited ordering period. I'm going to be eating congee for a whole month. :sigh

    10. I try very hard not to have unplanned acquisitions... But I've been into bjds since 2004 and crazy stuff sometimes just happens! *_*

Recently, I was at the KBJD Show. It's hard to plan for things you don't know you will see at a bjd con, so... I bought two dolls without having any plans.

When I went to the BJDC in 2012, I saw a doll there and bought it.

Three times, a friend has just sent me dolls! So--total surprise!

I won a doll as a prize at a CCBJD Con. Surprise!

I saw a large doll being sold for $99 and couldn't resist.

      ---

In a way, most of the dolls I have are unplanned, since I see them on limited sales and have to buy or not. And I've seen a number of dolls come up in the Marketplace or Ebay... but usually those are dolls I've been looking at before--so I guess they are a little bit planned.

I'm now thinking that I don't really plan much for ANY of my dolls, although some are definitely total surprises! :D

    11. I got Avalon by pure...Well luck I guess. I was browsing the marketplace a day before my birthday because I was originally going to start a layaway for a Kid Delf and thought I could find a better price second hand...Well outpops this thread saying Resinsoul Song NS and I clicked it...Instant love. My mom got him as a birthday present for me on layaway and when I got him I swear it felt like my birthday all over again! XD The others...They have stories of their own. Kazumi and Noah my hybrid girls are from trades (though Kazumi was just her body I bought her head), Vala and Veronica were gifts, Vala from my mother for Christmas and Veronica from my father for my birthday.

    12. I still can't believe my luck with my only impulse buy--Volks Suiseiseki. I made a trip into Umeda Mandarake because I hadn't been there for a while, and there were the Rozen Maiden twins with their fullset outfits and everything for a lower price because they didn't have their original boxes. I bought Suiseiseki that day and went back for Souseiseki the next ^o^ I ended up deciding I didn't need them both, but it was really amazing and I can't believe I got the chance to pick up such a rare girl. I think perhaps they didn't know fully what they had! I'm still trying to give her the faceup that I want:)

    13. Well I had TOLD myself that I'm just going to have two large girls and that's it, and then I saw a Buddy Doll Claude on ebay for $300 and he was a full set. Wig, eyes, shoes, outfit.. original face-up... everything and I just... placed my bid and crossed my fingers and I got him!

I was very sad when Buddy Doll went out of business years ago and i'm very excited that I took the chance and bid on him.

I TOTALLY forgot how giant these 70cm boys are though >.<

    14. I haven't really had a lot of impulse purchases, but I did get a nice surprise earlier this year. I'd seen news announcements about a dealer closing up shop, and raffling off a few remaining items for charity, and decided that while I pretty much had no chance of getting anything I wanted, the first-prize doll was really lovely and I may as well take the chance. Can't win if you don't enter, and all that, right?

Imagine my surprise when I picked up my phone for my usual just-woke-up email check, opened the email from the dealer, and saw "first prize winner" in the body of the email! I was totally stunned that this girl was coming home to me! She's just as beautiful in person, and while she's not fitting in as the character I originally planned to put her into, she's inspiring me on another one, and some others to go with her. And she's from a company I hadn't even looked at before, but I'm now shopping at for a possible brother for her. She's really a fantastic little surprise!

    15. My only impuls buy was an A-family petdoll (fox). He just happened to go in my shoppingbasket when shopping for eyes and clothes.

    16. The only impulse buy that I every had was last month. I was looking on eBay and I saw a luts kdf pine girl for sale in Australia and what was more awesome that it was in the same state as me. I bought her and she arrived a few days later. I do not regret getting her as my little Rikku is perfect!!~

    17. I've done a couple of impulse buys - my third and fourth dolls were far from planned, and my recent purchase was not meant to happen quite that way.

With the third and fourth dolls, purchased at the same time - I was thinking I would just be sticking with the minis, tinies are just too cute and I would never like them! I spotted someone on ebay selling a second hand Bobobie Cookie and someone else at the same time selling a tiny Dollinian doll. Well, they are cute...and they aren't expensive...eh I'll try it... *click* Turns out I like cute little tiny dolls, oops ^^; They spawned off a collection of tinies.

As for the recent one, I was using a dealer to reference some potential future doll and clothes purchases, but I'm not going to buy anything! Oh wait, that outfit is a discontinued one and I want it for my Ronger anyway...next thing I know I'm paying for not only this rather nice tiny outfit I've been after, but three doll heads have slinked into my basket :P I totally justified spending $90 on doll heads by saying 'well, I'm already buying the outfit, so the postage won't be that much more if I add in these three...'

    18. My local anime convention was hosting a BJD cosplay contest, and the prizes were little Hujoo animals, a rabbit and a cat. At first I didn't think I'd have enough time to throw together a costume for my boy, but about a week before the convention I decided "to heck with it" and threw together a quick Pikachu kigurumi. Lemme tell you, he hated it. Pouted the entire time. But it turns out that hasty kigurumi netted me first prize! >.< That day, I took home my very own Hujoo Nano Rabi in pink, named her Amelia, and the rest is history.

I never thought I'd own anything smaller than an SD, maybe an MSD, but my tiny little rabbit is growing on me like you wouldn't believe. I want more little animals, to be her friends!

    19. The most impulsive doll purchase I have made would be my fullset Real Puki Toki. I saw the teaser pics, and then he came up for sale a week later. Started debating buying the fullset Friday afternoon, and ordered him the next morning. The Lume Doll Elin and Xaga Doll Ken came home much faster than planned because they were available. And then I decided quirky DZ Wendy would fit with my odd scale collection, and Mint on Card still had some. None of them are going anywhere.

    20. I agonized over my first Iplehouse KID for days, during a LE time period, before hitting the button. So she wasn't exactly an impulse purchase, but she was definitely a "I didn't plan to fall in love" kind of purchase.

The second and third Iple girls were definitely impulse buys. I bought them second-hand, and felt like I was rescuing them.

For this year, I've actually planned out my purchases, and I hope I can stick to the plan!
