Your Surprise/Sudden/Unplanned Acquisition Stories...

Oct 21, 2007

    1. I was spontaneously gifted a sweet little junk casting from a friend in my local doll group, with the suggestion that she would be a good head for faceups. Well, I summarily named her Æthel and built her a temporary bust, and she's wormed her way into my collection! She's even convinced me that she needs a body, so I can build her beautiful Anglo-Saxon garments! :XD: We'll see--my planned LLT Roderich gets priority over a stray junk-head!

    2. My first doll was unplanned. I'd seen her on a friend's blog and fallen in love. Well, about a year ago, my friend decided to downsize her rather large collection and posted a list of the dolls she was keeping on FB and said everyone else was up for adoption. I hadn't been planning on a doll, but - if I didn't say something, I knew I'd probably never see my beautiful girl again. So I made an offer, she accepted - and eight days later, Fawn arrived. She doesn't always get the face time in photos that my tinies do, but I love her to pieces.

    3. I was on eBay, browsing for an old Custom House sculpt as usual. I randomly saw a Musedoll and got really hooked. The rest of the story is as they say...

    4. I saw someone selling a Pukifee ChiChi, blank. I'd never seen a Pukifee before, and I fell in love with him immediately. I showed him to my sister so she could see how cute he was, and she, of course, wanted it too. I stepped to the side and let my sister buy it. Seeing how happy she looked when I let her buy it was worth it, even if I was a little sad to let him go. As soon as she got her hands on him, my sister turned to me and said "surprise! I saw how much you liked him, so I tricked you into letting me buy him for you." I was so grateful!
The same sister also bought me a Doll Family JiFeng elf version for Christmas this year after seeing him on my wish list. She even dressed him up like a punk rocker, since I usually dress that way. Sisters are the best!

    5. My first two BJDs were extremely planned out. They were going to be (fraternal) twins. I'd looked at a ton of dolls and decided exactly what I wanted. I had their names, looks, and personalities planned... then had some unexpected life stuff come up, had to relocate, hit a financial slump, and wasn't able to get them for a few years. I didn't give up on it, though, and now that I'm in a better place I was able to save up enough that I could comfortably order them both at the same time. (Because like I said, they're twins, and it wouldn't suit their characters to only have one of them.) I paid for them, and now comes the waiting game. :)

...Which brings me to the unplanned part. ;) As excited as I am about them, I couldn't help thinking it would be really fun to also have somebody smaller that I could travel with more easily. I didn't plan to actually buy another doll right away, I was just going to look and see what my options were and how much I should expect to spend to get what I wanted. While I was browsing the Marketplace, though, I happened to see a doll that was exactly what I was looking for and that I could easily afford. I waffled a bit, then let the seller know I wanted to buy her. It's very likely my impulsive third doll will get here before either of my two planned-for-years ones.

    6. Me (for years): "Volks Sakaki is an awfully cute sculpt. I really ought to get one of my own some day... But they're rare, and pricey, and I'm not at all sure one would really go with the rest of my crew"... *stalls*... *waffles*... *makes all kinds of excuses*... *never seriously looks for a Sakaki of her own*

Friend Mary Alice (Pretty much out of the blue one afternoon): "I think I need to stop denying that I'm in love with more realistic dolls. I'm selling Mister Not-at-All-Realistic Sakaki."

Me (with not one second of hesitation): *squeak* ... "Mine!"

Doing that drained my entire doll fund and set back the ordering of another sculpt that I wanted for quite awhile, but it was completely worth it. No regrets. None.

    7. My Dollfie Dream was a bit of a surprise/unplanned purchase. For years I've always said "I'll buy a DD someday, but not today, Fairyland is having an event!" >_>
That, and the price for the average non-standard DD is a fair bit more than I've paid for any resin doll. Bit nerve wracking to make that jump in price for something unknown.

Then one day last year I had just sold a doll and had some money in my PayPal account. Then I looked online, and found an absolutely adorable Dollfie Dream. She was a decent price for a limited, but just a couple hundred dollars more than I had in my account. I decided that I couldn't justify it and resolved to save, and if she was still around in a couple months I'd get her.

The very next day I got a cheque in the mail from the government... Someone had reviewed my income tax and decided I'd been shorted *exactly* the amount of money I was short for the Dollfie Dream! It was obviously meant to be! I bought her right away and haven't regretted it for a second. I love love love her to pieces <3

    8. I was planning on getting either a Rex, Victor or Stella from Iplehouse last year during their Xmas event. But then:
      1) IOS said they were going release their older molds so I jumped on that.
      2) Iplehouse released Leonard and he was too gorgeous not to come home.
      3) Soom released a special order Puss in Boots in the color I wanted so I had to get him.
      4) Then a week or two later Soom released Zak which I thought would fit one of my characters really well...so there goes my money again.
      5) Finally, Iplehouse released Lawrence and I needed his outfit so I got him, too.

So come Xmas and I realized my bank account was empty so I couldn't get anything.

    9. I had been thinking I want a Volks Coco but hated how she sold out and I never had the funds when she was in stock. Then came the online FCS and low and behold there is that MSD F-18. I have been wanting that little girl since I discovered (I think through here) that with the right face up the F-18 looked darn close to Kurumi/Miruku and since then has been on my list. So I missed out on getting her through the online FCS cause by the time I had the money the order period was done. Now I'm doing my taxes and I started thinking of the last time I had bought a doll and figured out tonight it had been nearly 6 years and I've been in the hobby for 8. So I told myself look for a MSD Myu to complete my twins and be done. Until I found not one but two F-18s for sale. First one answered back and I sent the money right away. Best part because I live so close to the seller it will only take 2-3 days max to reach me. So now I'll have my mini-Kurumi and still wondering how I managed to pull this off so smooth.

    10. I have saved up my money about 6 months for a SD 75cm boy, but when IH release 4th theme and I fallen in love with my little girl. I bought her without thinking, that's a crush made my died in love :))). That time and now i continuing feel she was made for me :">
She was an unplanned doll, but i really love her a lot and i happy for this surprising gift XD

    11. So, I've always wanted a IH Claude, but Dollchoice has no layaway so it gives me the illusion that I am spending more money when in reality it probably isn't. So my first doll ended up being IOS Sezz on a Popodoll body which was totally unplanned because IOS were releasing their molds at some point last year so I got Sezz first. Then i needed a body for him so after some careful research I got the popodoll body.

Then when going through IH website, I came across Aria and literally fell in love with her sculpt, I looked away from the site for 3 days but the entire time when I was awake and when I was asleep I was thinking "Unghh to buy or not to buy?" and I lost 3 nights of sleep because of this. My argument ended up like this: "Well you don't like any other female doll sculpts aside Fairyland who is sold out of Feeples atm so there's nothing wrong with buying and it's not like you're gonna buy any other dolls afterwards" so I just went "Ok brain you are right for a change and enough is enough its time; I dont get myself anything nice anyway and those youtube gurus like StyleSuzi - I mean she treats herself with a PRADA bag and last year or something she bought a CHANEL bag! Geez louise and here I am just wanting a doll! ONE doll!" So yeah i boguht her.

Then I saw Dollclans and on their website they say they release molds like every 3 months I think? I can't remember but I saw Kien, saw his sculpt and thoguht he was totally awesome and fitted a character I had, then I saw their Christmas event and how it was $60 off and jumped on that...

...and I'm still not finished because finally, I went to fairyland to see if there were any Feeples released and saw that they had their Feeple60s on sale and I was like OMG HOW LONG WAS DIS? and I remembered I had sent an email like a year ago asking when they would have Feeples for sale again so when I saw that Feeple60 was there, I went click click click and by the end of the year my savings had disappeared.

      Just like that O_O

    12. I do things in 3's apparently. :T

Last year was Ringdoll Frankenstein, Migidoll Cho on a Luts body, and a Volks orphan. All within 3 months. (2 in Jan, Volks in March)

I told myself I was done and need to work on my new babies.

.....Now I have a Luts winter event head waiting for the Body, a supergem Sabik, and an April Story Rosella.

All were impulse buys/unexpected buys. :T I do love them though. I am not quite sure what my plans will be, but once they are all in my home I am sure I'll figure out some fun things.

I have to agree, the Volks staff are amazing people. (I need more Volks babies.....my poor wallet....)

LOOKS LIKE I'LL BE DOING OVERTIME AT WORK FOR A COUPLE MONTHS. @_@"

    13. That's pretty much half of my BJDs. :D As soon as I went on DoA marketplace, I saw Obitsu Haruka for sale. I think I hesitated for a day or so but it was very short period. Then around two and half years later my friend messages me that she saw head of my grail doll on ebay. Again, hesitated for a bit but I got her. Still waiting for body. But the most spontaneous buy was my newest girl - MiniFee Elya. Mom saw her head for sale and we bought it. We didn't expect her to have body any time soon but just a week later her body was on its way. According to tracking number it has reached my country already, so I should have it home this week. ^^

    14. My Grenade was unplanned (well her head at least) I was after a cheap practice head I saw a DollLove Ceceila and really liked the sculpt and she was on sale so I snapped her up a few days later it hit me how similar she was to my OC Grenade. I had never even thought of getting Grenade as a doll but it just seemed so perfect. Now I'm debating if I should buy here body now or wait until after my 21st birthday.

    15. Kazuki, my Unoa L-Bi that I purchased last month was completely unplanned. Although L-Bi has been in my wishlist since forever ago I wasn't going to be getting him quite yet... But then I saw him on the marketplace... I had the funds from selling another doll... And so I just went ahead and bought him. I can't wait to pay him off and bring him home!

there have also been several Soom surprise dolls that I never thought I'd own that came up for sale either via FCE, or otherwise over the years... My Smokey, Lami and Dia are all part of this...

    16. My first unplanned doll was a Switch Huisa head. I've always love Switch's sculpts. And at that time switch was taking pre-order for La Vie En Rose and my friend and I had extra money. I bought Huisa and she bought Milhwa.

Another unplanned bjd is my newly arrived Soom male Dia. I've been infatuated with Dia for long time, it's such a gorgeous mold. I never thought I would own him, but I just happened to picked up extra hours from my jobs when the Soom Christmas kit events was going on. I decided to buy him, and he was also a birthday present for myself.

    17. mine has a two part story:

For almost three years, there have been three dolls I really wanted: Ringdoll Valo, Ringdoll Pan, and Ringdoll Petter. Valo was my first doll, and I thought I had time to get Pan and Petter. But...last September (or around there) Ringdoll announced they were discontinuing Pan, and my heart BROKE. I wanted him as an older brother to my Valo, but now...he was going to be alone!

That's when my one sneaky friend bought his head for me as a christmas present, which I wasn't able to get from her until January. She hid him for THREE MONTHS! I'm still so shocked. I never thought I'd get him. Let alone have someone buy him for me!

He had been sitting here since January without a body, until the same friend and I were talking about what body I was going to get for him. Last week sometime, she sent me a link to Fantasy Doll's 1/3 version 2 body at MOC, which was in stock, and a really affordable price -even with the semi ridiculous amount for shipping-.

I've come into a LOT of money, even with saving up for vacation, I had a good chunk left. I debated for a few days in buying that body. I knew nothing of the company, nor how the body looked, posed, etc. I like a good amount of time to research stuff before I buy it.

But...I wound up yelling yolo, paid for him on the 13th, and he arrived the 15th.

I know I should have saved the extra money for vacation, but I'm SO happy I bought that body! It's so beautiful, and matches Ringdoll's white REALLY well!

Now I can take them both with me on vacation, and neither of them will be lonely, or have to stay here!!!

    18. My second (possibly first) doll was unplanned. Someone was auctioning off their dolls via Google Docs instead of ebay or anything so I put in a bid when it was still low, then I kept the tab open. When it started ticking into the last few seconds, I entered a bid, not actually expecting to win. I thought I'd get outsniped because two people had been bidding back and forth steadily.

...But I won! XD And since she's going to most likely arrive before the first company doll I ordered, she'll end up being my first.

    19. My last doll was unplanned. I had planned on a specific boy sold at JS, and when I went to their site I decided to check in the clearance section first. They had an aged DZ Aaron, who was a sculpt I had never really paid any attention to. The more I looked at him , the more I liked him. Plus, with the discount, he was almost the same price as the boy I had originally came for. Added into all that was the fact that he had just been discontinued by the company, so I realized it might be my last chance to have him. So I ordered him, and before he arrived I found out that his original fullset outfit was still listed on MOC in stock, so I got that too! He ended up being perfect for my little family, even though neither he nor his character were originally planned. I'm very happy with him!

    20. My Souldoll Uha was unplanned. In December I ordered Souldoll's Justitia and thought I might want to get an extra Zenith body so I wouldn't need to switch out that massive armor and just be able to switch off heads. I got a good deal for an Uha on the Marketplace here but I didn't expect to fall completely in love with her. And there's no way she's willing to give up her head for any length. A couple a months later I picked up another Uha for that body and she turned out very different from my first girl even with the same default faceup and I loved her too so now I have sisters. And I still need another body!
