Your Surprise/Sudden/Unplanned Acquisition Stories...

Oct 21, 2007

    1. I only actually planned to get two of my dolls. I was looking through the market place, and I clicked on the thread, and I was like, "YES" and bought him. This happened with Taylor, a Resinsoul Sui, and Oliver, a Withdoll Kyle. I was scared I was going to regret it, but I love them and I am so glad they are part of my resin family now. No second guessing for me from now on.

    2. None of my dolls have been planned! I told myself when I first discovered bjds that the only way I could afford to have a doll was to make one myself. Then I fell in love with Impldoll's Charles, but knew I couldn't afford him. Around that time, a friend of mine invited me to share her stall space at an art fair andI made enough extra money to order Charles and have a little left over! He also came with a free head, vivien, which fit perfectly on a bobobie body I stumbled across on ebay for a very good price, which I got with the profits left over. Oops. X) I recently ran across resinsoul's Sui, who fit an oc I've had for over 7 years perfectly, just as I've been given some money as a present. I can't wait til he arrives!

    3. I don't so much do it with dolls, but there's a growing box of random parts/a floating torso that definitely weren't planned. Speaking as a thrifter and a crafter I love having random bits and bobs around to work with or fit together, no matter the hobby, and whenever I see parts, especially obscure body bits that don't come up often, I have to try very hard not to scoop them up... or else I'd never have money for the planned purchases.

    4. This is exactly how I got myself into layaway hell this summer:doh I'm going along...slow and steady as usual...with my planned acquisitions. And then suddenly, wham! Someone puts up a split for a head I'd always wanted but could never get because it's only sold as a whole doll by the company. In splits, people always want the head, not the body...but this time it was reversed so I had to go for it no matter what=Layaway #1. Of course this meant that I needed a special body for that head (and that's another case of the company not selling the body I needed separate from the head.) So I had to buy a whole doll=Layaway #2. Then I was in the marketplace and stumbled upon an adorable Soom sculpt I'd obviously missed out on when my computer crashed last summer=Layaway #3. And then Peakswoods had a special release of romantic MSD sculpts in a gorgeous special skin color and I'd always wanted one of their dolls=Layaway #4. And then, just when I thought I'd reached the ultimate limit of what I was willing to endure by way of tight budgets, I stumbled upon a sculpt I'd always wanted, as a full set no less, at an absolute gonga price=Layaway #5. My summer is full of ramen noodles...Woe is me!:...(

    5. I'd planned on one tiny this year, because I'd always wanted one and because it'd be a lot easier to take on trips than an SD. It was also supposed to be the one exception to my all-doll-purchases-must-be-to-shell-an-OC rule. Then Sullivan (Idealian) happened-- but at least I've got an OC he seems like a perfect fit for. And then Soom released the Cheshire kittens, which I did manage to resist... for a little while. So I have another exception to pretty much the only I have rule I have aaaaand two layaways to juggle. Curse you, Soom! (Please don't do this to me anymore.)

    6. Hey, I'm glad to know so many have the same situation with their collections! Of my 6 current dolls, only 3 were planned. The first surprise was also am impulse buy - my first tiny! He's DollLeaves Puppet V01 and he was in the MP for such a low, low price, I quickly decided to give him a home and I'm so glad I did. I don't think there's many of these little guys around. My mom thinks he's the cutest ever and she's kinda 'meh' with my dolls.

The second surprise was a big surprise! I was looking to sell or trade a large male body that didn't click with me. I had a couple offers that were not quite my style. Then, I was offered a brand new Ringdoll Amethyst. How can I say 'no' to that face? I also made a friend with my trade partner (bonus!).

My third unplanned doll is my 'magic friendship doll', Joshua. A friend was unsuccessful in selling him in the MP and traded his head to me for some eyes. I traded another friend for some eyes for him. I found a damaged body for cheap in the MP that needed new feet. So, I hosted a GO to make the shipping for the feet reasonable. Then on an eBay auction I found the perfect wig for super cheap! My luck wasn't over, another friend sold me some really nice clothes that fit him like a glove! So, with the help of my lovely friends and the DoA MP, I have a new-to-me doll that I really like! I'm hoping for the luck of friends that I can give him a nice faceup while we are having a meet at my house.

    7. Last week on Mandarake:
*browsing dolls, browsing dolls - stop*
"Oh, look, it's a Volks Kurt!"
      *takes closer look*
"Hm, almost full-set. Hat is missing. Papers, too, if I understood correctly. Everything else is there, even original face-up. Oh well, he'll be too expensive ..."
      *looks at price tag*
"He's - HOW MUCH??? Dang, for THAT price I'd be an idiot NOT to buy him ..."
*sleeps over it and clicks "buy" button the next day*

And now he's in Frankfurt, in customs, waiting to be shipped on to Munich.

    8. Planned and purchased a Doll Leaves Evan, and when he arrived, I started thinking it would be nice to get one of the past event Noir heads that I missed out on. They could body share, yeah -what a nice daydream...next day spotted a Noir head for sale(!) and immediately purchased it. Only issue is the resin is years older and MUCH darker than the new DL resin. Oops, what have I done? OK, I HAD to see if I could find a body that would match, did in less than a week, and ordered it. I gotta stop daydreaming!

    9. The funny thing is, the two dolls in my collection which I agonized over for a long time before getting, are the two dolls I regret buying. Most of my other dolls were quick decisions, and they are the ones I love the most.

I got Tumnus, Rex and an Edmund head from a 5 Star Event, and had not planned on it. It was the first time I took part in an event, and I only took a few days to decide to do it.
Tumnus is my favorite doll, and I am SO glad I bought him.
I recently made the decision to buy Dreaming Doll Misora from the Marketplace. I knew I wanted an MSD girl. I had wanted one from 5 Star, but their choices for that size doll are pretty sad right now. I was just browsing through the MSD dolls in the Marketplace and when I saw Misora I thought she was very cute. I did a quick bit of research on her, and then contacted the seller. I absolutely adore my Misora "Mia" girl, and have no regrets. I should do impulse buying more often.

    10. Tripp was planned. The reploids started as a concept and rapidly snowballed. I'm still stunned that I have three.
X I fell in love with and offered a trade I didn't really think her previous owner would accept, (I only just had MP access, no feedback and offered custom clothes) Zero was my early Birthmasaversary gift from my guy when we found out Batchix only had two of her sculpt left in the right colour (I panicked) and Vile we got right after Zero because her previous owner didn't bond with her and I follow her on tumblr so I got to call dibbs :D but yeah... Zero was kinda planned after I got X, then my boyfriend started agitating for a Vile doll after that. So it was like a weird chain reaction.

    11. My minifee Liria was a unplaned. I was browsing the Fairyland page and then found the event. I fell in love in the sculpt and had to have her. Sleept on the idea and then bought her. So now I have to find eyes/shoes/clothing beacouse I don't have anything for her

    12. My daughter had been in the hobby for a couple of years and had me flirting with the idea of taking the plunge myself. But I was beginning to think it was not meant to be. Seemed like every time I was able to save some money some event would occur and I would need to spend it. I found my Abadon's sculpt and was in love and shed tears every time I was forced to spend the money I was saving for him. I had had a particularly harsh day of errands had gotten into a fuss with a friend and was generally feeling very overwhelmed. My daughter called and asked if I could come for a visit at her house. I explained that I was not good company and had had a bad day and apologized for not being in the mood to go for a visit. About 30 minutes later my door opened and in stepped my daughter with a long box in her hands. She smiled and said, "since you didn't want to come for a visit, I decided to come visit you instead." She puts the box down in my lap and hands me a pair of scissors telling me to be gentle opening the box. With complete confusion I start to slowly slice through the yellow tape. When I opened his box and seen that it was my Abadon and she had bought it for me feeling I needed a friend. I held them both to me and cried.

    13. Last year I was done, or so I told myself. Barring acquiring a certain pair of Dollmore fashion BJD's, not likely to happen, I told myself no more BJD's. I was getting to maximum capacity of the case I intended to show them off in. But then I saw a Miro 70cm body and a Supia Rosy in the market and I caved. She has such a pretty face I thought, and I admittedly had been looking at Supia Rosy dolls for quite a while. Then OMG, a Ringdoll Frankenstein 2011 head came up for sale at a price I could actually afford. Horror freak that I am I just had to grab him and get him a body. (RS Dark Grey, 70cm on order.) While I was doing that this cheeky green RS girlie snuck into my cart. RS Dai, in green, a longtime want. For a long time I was torn between a NS Dai and a green one. I got the NS Dai a while back but in the back of my mind that green Dai was still sitting there, calling to me, and I guess it was just...time...Resistance is futile....lol

    14. I'd actually just sold my Simply Divine floating head on tumblr and was going to hang on to the money in order to get something from Lillycat once they started appearing in the secondhand market in the color I wanted or on her site. What I wasn't expecting is immediately falling in love with a different doll after coming back into the hobby. I saw Adori from Haru Casting on tumblr and immediately splurged on the smiling head, eyes, a wig, and now a secondhand body for him. I wasn't expecting that since I've never really wanted one of the tiny dolls, but here I am. Guess Lillycat has to wait!

    15. Well my first unplanned BJD buy was actually my first doll. I was considering getting a doll because I had just received some birthday money and one of my friends had a doll. I wasn't sure yet, though. Then I found an Illusion Spirit on eBay for a very low price with clothes, a wig, and eyes and I just impulsively bid on her. Well I ended up winning the bid and that's how I got my doll! Now she is very spoiled and has a new faceup, better clothes and wears a new wig and eyes that suit the character I had in mind for her.

    16. I bought a new body for my Minifee Luka, but couldn't quite bring myself to sell his old body yet. And then I stuck his sleeping head on his old body and...lo and behold I somehow aquired a fourth doll. OTL.

    17. i've been waiting to reply to this thread!!! i just bought a migidoll ryu head * ^ *

actually i'd made a promise to myself literally only 2 weeks ago that i would wait until i get a full-time job to buy a doll, but then migi announced that one of my favorite molds—the ryu—would be going on sale for the last time this month. i knew that if i let this pass i'd never forgive myself LOL so i just bought his head :D go me!!

i'm still sticking to my original promise of waiting until i get proper job to start buying him a body and other things, but my decision to buy was almost instantaneous huhu. before i knew migi would be retiring the ryu sculpt i was almost certain my first purchase would be an ell. but i'm actually pretty glad this happened! unexpectances are the best.

    18. I bought my Peakswoods tiny tan Leo at Dollism in Buffalo, NY completely by impulse.
I had saved money and had a wig and clothes set aside for the msd girl Hael full set from the Dollmore booth.....but I went to Peakswoods booth first and saw him looking so cute and caved right then and there. Plus, the lady running the booth was an excellent salesperson.
And now Hugo is one of my favorites. :)

    19. I wanted to buy mi first Yo-SD girl, it was going to be a Grape, one of DollsBe little ones. I saved a lot of money, waiting for the pre-order to open for months.
When the pre-order was opened, he had released 4 new sculpts and I irremediably fell in love with Mango at the very first instant I saw it. I had to purchase it, that smile was too much for me, and I instantly forgot about Grape xD

    20. I had 2 unplanned happy purchases this year! One was when a peach cheese mouse I had inquired about in the MP in September that the seller misplaced was suddenly found again after Christmas. The other was some sort of magic. A doll I had received in a trade and then had to sell in 2013 suddenly came up for sale. I had sold him back to the person I had gotten him from originally. He still had the Easter themed face up I had given him!!! So, 2 very happy stories for me. :D It did unfortunately jeopardize my plan to get Mac before Pipos retired him, but how upset can I truly be? (Still sad about Mac though....)
