Your take on wigs made from human hair

Aug 28, 2011

    1. Update! I answered this last year, and just wanted to say I finally made a human hair wig. :) I actually really like it! It's perfect for my character and I love how I can straighten or curl it. And it is my husband's hair, so I know where it is from and that it is clean and donated voluntarily. :)

    2. As long as the wig was made from hair that was freely given, I don't see a problem. They make human wigs from human hair, so why not doll wigs? I think you'd just have to take really good care of it...

    3. I am currently working on a human hair wig made from my dearest and most beloved friend and I love the idea. :) She had very long, silky and beautiful hair in a very unique brown shade, but as her hair is rather thin she preferred to cut it off, to give herself a fresher, healthier look.
She gave the braid to me and I decided to make something out of it.
As soon as I've found my own cut-off hair (haha, I'm quite desperate to find it...) I will make a wig from that one, too.

    4. I think I would be more comfortable making the wig myself if I went for a real hair wig. That way I know exactly where the hair came from, getting rid of that unknown factor. And I could clean/dye/treat the hair anyway I want before I finish it. Plus, since I'm so cheap, making a wig would be better than buying one!

    5. Honestly, I've never thought of it before. But reading everyone's comments, I see pros and cons. (I'll also preface my comment by saying I've only read part of this thread, I haven't read the whole thing yet)

Does it gross me out/freak me out, no. If it felt weird it probably would, but that's be my reaction to any wig regardless of material. I know many people say "you shouldn't sell your hair you should donate it" but I've heard many not so savory things about even the 'best' and well known hair to wig donation places. I have long hair (mid thigh length currently) and though I've donated hair in the past, I've done research and of the places I have to choose from if I were to donate again and honestly, I wouldn't do it again. I'm not going to go into details (if you're wanting details, Google is great for things like that) but I'm not in the camp of "no hair should be sold!" or "all hair should be donated!". If I were to chop my hair off again I'd probably look into selling it. Unless I could find a reliable source to send it to, I'd prefer to sell it. It'd be kinda cool to think 'wow! A doll could wear this someday!'

I don't know if I'd ever buy a human hair wig because of all the maintenance they require. (My hair is still attached to my head and it needs a lot of attention! I can't imagine a wig!) Also, I'm sure the price would put me off of the idea.

About telling others, I don't ever announce details of my doll (except occasionally the model/mold. Example I usually say "This is Alice" but sometimes it's "This is Alice, my Kid Delf Aru" to more dolly oriented people). If other ask I tell them. I don't like to be proud/vain and I also don't like to lie. If they asked, I'd give an answer.

    6. I am not sure whether to think it's creepy or special.

I guess my squick factor is about where is the hair coming from and why or how was it sold? Is it from an ethical source, that sort of thing.

    7. What a croc,

Human hair wigs are great as you can wash them and re style them with or without heat.
with fibre wigs you have to use wet heat.
Human hair wigs will last much longer, yes they are slightly more expensive but think how much extensions cost.

Personally I like Mohair wigs as the scale is better and the ease if styling is the same as human hair.

    8. I cannot use human hair for wigs or extensions for myself or my dolls. I have a very bad compulsion to pick at and peel apart split ends. If my doll's wig began to split I would spend hours in euphoria peeling apart every split end until there was nothing left.

So, I use synthetic wigs to prevent myself from doing this.

    9. I put human hair on my own head for about 7 years, so I don't really have a problem with it. I still have some around for just such an opportunity as creating a wig/reroot for a doll.

If I didn't already have a stash of hair, I probably wouldn't use it because it's EXPENSIVE!

    10. Human hair IS expensive, esepecially if it's been dyed a certain color. If it was a little more affordable I think it would be a more feasible option. I do enjoy how they can look on dolls. However, I love the way synthetic wigs look too. You can do just as much with them as you can human hair if it's the right kind of fiber. It can also look just as realistic.

    11. For me i think it's a matter of getting too close to that uncanny valley. I don't think I'd be outright freaked out but it is a bit unsettling to me.

    12. I would use a human hair wig without thinking twice if it was what I needed. I see it similar to using one's own blood to paint; not everyone will like it, but it's the choice of the artist, not theirs. I'm sure that human hair wigs behave much better than synthetic; completely heat-resistant and (if it were my hair, anyway) curls up nicely just by soaking in water.

    13. I don't like them.
I think sintetic will be enough for my needs with dolls.
I remember when I was little ans was shown a doll with human hair. She as a long stock Pipi that someone had replaced her hair in the 80's.
I was young and it still felt weird. Is a visceral thing and not a logical one, but I dont like them.

    14. While I agree it's a choice, there's always a fine line between whether you should and should not do something just because you can. :/ I don't think this is a good comparison because this is very extreme and for a normal painting blood should not be acceptable but for an extreme painting with very hot emotions and the blood actually means something (and it's gotta be extreme) then it's acceptable.

Updating from last year, I'd really rather still not use human hair on a doll. If I used my own hair, it'd be really creepy telling people that my doll's use my hair. And with someone else's, I could just tell people it's real hair which is less creepy but more creepy on me because I really don't know whose hair it is. Not a germ thing, but soooo uncomfortable. :/ This isn't so much an ethics issue as it is what's comfortable for you.

    15. I don't see any problem, I use some extencion with human hair, and if i found a beautiful wig fr my doll with human hair I want it!! Usually I looking for synthetic wig, but this is not a problem~~

    16. To me it's somewhat creepy although I can't even say why. Maybe I have just watvhed too much Supernatural^^

    17. I will not use them, unless it was my own hair or someone I know. I've seen how they cut girls with long hair to blood to get as much hair from them as possible.
But I don't think I would have been creeped out if someone told me they used human hair, I would just dislike the idea of it coming from some poor girl.

    18. in all honesty, it creeps me out lol, so no, not even if it was my own hair lol

    19. Yes, it does feel kinda creepy. But, eh, well, people use other people's hair as extensions so I see no problem with using it for their dolls. I would just personally not do it--It must look beautiful, but...I dunno .___.U

    20. Lol, I think that's part of my problem too. XD
