Your take on wigs made from human hair

Aug 28, 2011

    1. I think it would freak me out for my doll to have human hair. Maybe for me it's crossing the line a little? Somehow making them too real? When I was little I used to think my cabbage patch was real and would wonder around my room at night while I slept (wasn't frightened by this, just intrigued) so maybe I'm a little odd anyway. :)

    2. im really not a fan of the idea, not only how they become way to real, but to have something up that was part of a human... oh no! to because the hygiene, but just...no

    3. *shrug* The highest quality wigs and extensions for humans are made from human hair. It doesn't really bother me. If you're buying commercial extensions/wefts there's no sanitation issue - all the hair has been treated, possibly stripped of the cuticle so it tangles less, and dyed to certain factory colors.

None of my dolls are currently wearing a human hair wig, but I did buy some human hair weft to try making a wig once. I only don't have it on anyone because I made a poor choice of fabric for the underlying cap and it wouldn't stay on. Someday I will probably pick all the stitches out and remake it. Though I actually like the look of mohair more - it's better in-scale.

    4. It doesn't freak me out at all, and quite frankly, I don't understand why it would anyone else? This hobby is all about customization right? So wouldn't hair be apart of that? Not all synthetic/fur wigs will behave as you want it to, but human hair will, and it probably looks more natural too. I'm somewhat of a cheapskate though, so I'd just as soon stick with $10 fur wigs, heh.

    5. It doesn't bother me, I like being able to do more with it. The only thing that would freak me out I think is if a doll somehow used real human nails, I've always had a thing about nail clippings :/

    6. What I am asking is does it freak you out? Why or why not?
Human hair wigs for dolls don't freak me out the slightest- just like human hair extensions for women don't bother me.
I own a few dolly wigs that are made of human hair- and it's something I don't mention to people, simply because I can't be bothered to listen to the whole 'eww that's nasty/creepy/etc.'

    7. Ewwwww...I think it is creepy! I am aware that is illogical but I do not care. It is still creepy.

    8. Idk if creepy is the word I'd use, but I'm just not feelin it lol. I don't think I'd freak out if someone said their doll had a human hair wig, but I don't think I'll be rushing out to get one for my girls. Plus like someone else mention, you actually have to take care of it like real hair. No thanks. I'm not gonna shampoo and moisturize my dolls hair lol

    9. I think it's really logical to use human hair, as we kind of know how it works, plus we don't generally have to kill or mistreat humans to obtain it (I suppose there must be some scam, somewhere, though...) That said, I would feel weird knowing that I wig I owned was human hair... even if it's been sterilized and everything, I still get the whole "contamination by association" thing... it makes me a little squeamish. I have no issue with the association of human hair with dolls, but I guess I'm a little weird about human hair in general. Huh.

    10. Well, human hair is trimmed, washed and cleaned, plus I'm sure that it does style better than synthetic. Personally I don't think it's any stranger than using mohair or tibetan lamb pelt (which does freak me out a little - knowing that there's actually lamb skin on my doll's head). If you've ever seen unprocessed wool/mohair, it's far worse than human hair. The wool is covered in dirt, faeces, twigs and all sorts of rubbish. Not pretty. I'm a lot less worried about human hair, which is generally clean.

    11. I think the hair used to make any doll wig would have been thoroughly cleaned so it's not really disgusting to me. Really it's the same as a fur wig, the hair just came from a different animal. I just don't think I'd buy one because the cost is more I think? And there are so many really nice synthetic wigs available.

    12. Oh, no! Never! Yuck. I would never put real hair on a doll.

    13. It doesn't freak me out at all, since you can find wigs and extensions made of human hair for people. It probably goes through the same commercial making process as those, so really a human hair wig on a doll is not out of place and also I'm sure you can style it better than synthetic hair. Well if somebody random would offer me to make one, I might not buy it for sanitary issues, but from a professional company I don't mind at all. At least the hairs don't go wasted. Only things that freaks me out (I used to work in a museum) are crowns or accessories made of human hair (and mostly if they're work of several family generations and are including dead people's hair (taken after death)). Well that's creepy. :ablah:

    14. I'd be okay with it if the wigs were made with ethically gathered hair, and cleaned of course. I hear a lot of stories of poor women either getting next to nothing for selling their hair, or they gave it away as part of a religious ceremony but someone took it and sold it, or there's people who donate their hair to charity and it gets sold instead.

But if it's ethically gathered, then why not? Assuming it looks good on my doll and whatnot.

    15. I don't have a problem with it. I actually have really long hair at the moment and I was considering cutting it and making a doll wig out of it. At least I know that my own hair is clean and well maintained. I might feel slightly more odd about owning a wig made from a stranger's hair, but if it was a really nice wig I'd probably get over it.

    16. It doesn't freak me out~ as a matter of fact I own a couple french (I think?) in origin dolls (unrelated to BJD of any sort) that came with human hair as a default. The people around me probably wouldn't mind either... I know my parents don't. Wigs made of human hair are nice, soft and easy to style and take care of and clean~ I wouldn't mind BJD sized wigs made out of them~

    17. I quite like the idea. If I had the money I think I would probably get one made. But I can see peroples discomfort with the idea. Its just a bit strange to think about I guess, Im sure if I gave it to much thought id find a reason to edge away from the idea

    18. Actually, I once saw a documentary and it's quite the custom for the temples to sell the hair that was gathered in religious ceremonies. Those temples need money, too, for maintenance, etc, you know? And as far as I gathered from that documentary, the people donating the hair know about the hair being sold. They also showed that the hair is washed several times, actually, before it's sorted and dyed. So hygiene doesn't seem to be an issue, either.

As for me, I don't think I'd have any more problems with a human hair doll-wig than I'd have with human hair extensions. If a human hair doll-wig were exactly the thing I was looking for, I'd get it. If not - then not.

    19. I don't see any (ethical or hygienic) difference between human hair wigs for people and for dolls. I've never used either, but at my theater, our make-up girl makes wigs for us and other productions as well, and so while I'm not intimately familiar with the proceedings, I know at least that the hair she uses is perfectly safe and perfectly ethically obtained. The difference I see is the practical one, where human hair wigs are more high maintenance, but since that wasn't the question I'll just stick to; no, human hair wigs don't creep me out.

    20. Doesn't really freak me out, they're sure to be a lot softer than synthetic, and there's so much more you can do with human hair than plastic fibers.
