Your take on wigs made from human hair

Aug 28, 2011

    1. Nooo, that would be too creepy for me.

    2. My sister has a box of her human hair extensions in the house. Now it doesn't scare me (or obviously her) but my Mum found the box and opened it out of curiosity not knowing what it was. She thought it was a dead ferret in a box and screamed the house down. That's the only experience I've had with people being weirded out by human hair, haha.

I honestly really don't mind apart from the fact that it might have been better donated to somewhere that does wigs for people who might benefit from it more than a doll. But if they chose to sell it to make wigs, that's their choice. I don't think it's weird to buy it at all, so long as it is properly cleaned and up to hygiene standards.

    3. I'm terribly bothered by human hair wigs. I think it would be a pretty interesting idea so long as the hair was properly cleaned and wouldn't effect the doll negatively.
I might be a bit freaked out if I knew who's hair it was (unless it was the owner's hair).

    4. I don't see a problem; it'd make dyeing and attending it a lot easier imo.. And if it was naturally dark it wouldn't stain the doll...? I'd assume anyways.

    5. Ew, that's disgusting! You mean people can use clean hair from a reliable wigmaking source and actually put that horrific sanitized shining stuff on their doll's actual heads, allowing them to style and handle it as if it were on a live person, passing all kinds of diseases? </sarcasm>

Um, it's hair. Hair is just strands of protein. Possibly one of the most cleanable things about a human, and not an essential body part so much as a byproduct. Unless one has religious issues with using human hair, or you believe that dead, detached hair harbors some life of its own, energy or portions of another person's soul, I don't see why it's a problem. Humans have been making wigs for centuries. I have no idea why it should be shocking or upsetting, but I guess if people felt like it wasn't cleaned properly that might be iffy.

    6. not for me

    7. Hmmm...if my doll were into voodoo then she could use the hair for binding spells to control those the hair came from....but she isn't, so....probably not.

    8. Well, I often wear extensions that are made of real human hair, and if they're good enough for me, they're good enough for my doll :)

    9. I can understand different sides of it, but I personally am not bothered at all by human hair wigs, even on dolls. I'm also quite fond of human bone jewelry.

    10. I'm a hairstylist so obviously hair doesn't creep me out.

That being said, people who are freaked out by it should realize that most extensions for humans are made of human hair.
It has so many advantages to synthetic hair that it is crazy. Number one is that human hair can be restyled with heat (without the threat of melting).
Also, if you've ever owned a human hair wig for yourself, then you should know that it is so much easier to care for if it is human hair because it does not tangle as easy and it easier to detangle/care for.

I think most people are grossed out by it because they think it is "dirty". With extensions and wigs for humans, the hair is thoroughly cleaned. I'm sure it's the same with the human hair wigs for dolls so there is really no reason to think it's gross.

In the end though, it is all up to personal opinion and personal like/dislikes.

    11. Wouldn't bother me at all or seem icky or unclean or weird or gross or creepy or any of those things. As long as it's lice-free, I don't have any issue with human hair... heck, it's a heck of a lot cleaner than human hands!

But I wouldn't want it on my dolls, simply because most human hair is quite thick and coarse, and I don't think the drape would be right. I really really dislike human-scale items being used for dolls - things like fabrics with too large of prints, fabric that's too stiff so it sticks out in a way that it never would on a person, or knitwear that a single strand of the yarn is twice as thick as the dolls' thumbs... Unless it was incredibly fine hair (like from a human baby or something), it would be too thick like, per strand, to work on all but the largest dolls. If I want something that can be dyed and heat-styled like human hair, I'll use mohair.

    12. I am personally okay with them.. Just that they have to be cleaned an all! > < Don't want funny stuffs on it either!

    13. Doesn't bother me. As multiple people have said, human hair on dolls is something that has a long history. I used to read Doll Reader when I was little so I'm kind of used the idea by now.
That being said, I don't think I'd buy one. I'd prefer something finer textured. I kept some of my own to try and add to a doll but the scale just felt wrong. Mohair or synthetic is fine for me.

    14. I HATE when the wig look too shiny and fake on pictures, of course there is some high grade synthetic fiber that aren't that shiny but I'd be curious to try a wig made from human hair on my doll. I have some wigs for myself and one of them is made with human hair, I can say that it is sooo much easier to clean and style then synthetic fibers!

I never thought about that though! I myself have pretty fine hair, so the scale isn't that much different but you can't really choose how thin you want the hair when you buy human hair wig eh! You made a good point here!

    15. I wear a lot of wigs myself, and I would never get myself a human hair wig, so I would never get one for a doll either. Mostly it's a price issue. Also I LOVE Japanese Kanekolon wigs, and the nice ones look really natural, so I don't see the difference. And yes, the thought of wearing someone elses hair kind of freaks me out....

    16. i have one but i made it out of my extra weave from my extentions. but in general i wouldnt be creeped out. they are a pain though for me

    17. My vinyl Zwergnase doll has human hair...scale-wise it is perfect and it's all lovely and curly. I like fur wigs, and with them the animal is dead, human hair's from a living donor, so what's the problem. I don't find hair on humans disgusting....

    18. There is the ever-so-slight squik factor... but it doesn't stand up to any sort of logical thinking at all.

I mean, yeah, there are fur wigs for dolls that have skin caps! That's weirder. Still not terrible if you think about how many of us are eating FOOD from animals.

People have lots of irrational fears and thoughts. I try not to succumb to that, if at all possible.

I have a cloth doll that has a human hair wig... it does need upkeep (which I am too lazy to do), and looks like it could use some super-deep conditioning. So I'm not eager to have human wigs for the extra upkeep it'd need.

But if there was one that was PERFECT for my dolls, I'd consider it.

    19. While the idea is kinda cool, it's not something I'd ever want to spend money on personally. ;v;
I enjoy a good 'ol fur wig myself!~

    20. I think wig human hair should be reserved for humans, especially for patients: the cancer patients who no longer want their hair natural and fake wigs do not give the same effect as real hair. And it cost so expensive: (
