Your take on wigs made from human hair

Aug 28, 2011

    1. For me there's not a real "ick" factor when it comes to using human hair for doll wigs or any wig for that matter. I grew up in a house with a beautician(my mother) and a sister who also styles hair. I also grew up in an area where getting your hair braided was very, very popular. People who got their hair braided use anything from cheap synthetic to super expensive human hair so I never saw it as gross.

I'm looking into making my own wigs since I can never find the shades of red that I want for my dolls in styles that I like and I looked into human hair the only problem with it for me is if you don't align the cuticles of the hair correctly when making a wig out of human hair, you get crazy amounts of breakage.

Now, what does creep me out are the porcelain dolls that were made mostly in the Victorian and Edwardian eras that used the hair from their owners on the dolls. That's a little creepy when you consider the "supernatural" tales that are told about them.

    2. It's funny-- to me there does seem to be a difference between dirty human hair and dirty animal hair. I've handled unwashed wool and mohair and it just seems like a product in its raw state-- smelly and dirty but not in a bad way. But someone else's unwashed human hair is nasty to me. I wouldn't want to touch it, maybe because I associate dirty hair and the smell that comes with it to the times I've been so ill I haven't been able to wash my hair. Even dirty dog hair grosses me out-- maybe because I associate dogs so closely with humans (good thing I'm not a hairstylist or dog groomer).

Now having said that, I wouldn't have a problem with a wig made out of human hair, which of course would be clean (as clean as mohair or any other fiber) and hopefully in scale (made from really fine hair). At that point it's just another natural fiber I'm using for my doll. But for a wig for myself I would still hesitate. The idea of wearing another human's byproducts squicks me a bit (although I may feel very differently if I ever need to have chemotherapy...) It's like the difference between wearing a necklace made of a bear claws versus a necklace made of human nail trimmings (although I do realize many would object to the former as well!).

    3. I wear human hair extensions, as I dye my hair often so I can also dye and style the extensions. So putting a human hair wig on a doll wouldnt freak me out. I mean c'mon the human hair you buy is washed and processed and dyed. Its nothing bad ^-^

    4. I think it's a little cweepy (in a good way) but in the old days people used real hair for dolls so it's not an uncommon idea.
But I don't like human extensions/wigs made from real hair in general cause you don't know in what kind of circumstances the hair was procured. I don't wanna know how many hair comes from poor people in third world countries., >_< cause I'll have to fret about that too and there's already enough drama in this world to fret about.

But I wouldn't use real hair on a doll but I wouldn't consider it wrong. There's even something very mystique about it to me ^_^.

    5. Coming from the antique doll world, the idea of human hair wigs never bothered me.

I have tried human hair wigs on bjd, but I didn't really like them... JPOP early on carried some human hair wigs dyed funky shades, I think the one I had was "gunmetal green". The top spiral where the hair was set into the wig-cap never really looked right on bjd compared with the synthetic ones on the market that are made for them. I always figured the dolls were made of something synthetic, so their hair might as well be!

    6. I admit, human hair wigs freak me out. I don't know, just the idea that it used to be on someone's head creeps me out. I understand that it's probaley the best material to use for a wig, it's just not for me.

    7. This doesnt bother me rather the wig is made by human hair or not. Instead, I believe the wig by human hair is hardly styling well comparing with those are not. Sometimes there are some wigs you bought for human & their are made by human hair. They are not easily styling with mud, hair cream etc. Also the quality is getting worse when the times goes by.

I refer going for the normal one. They are easy to styling at least.

    8. human hair has been used as a wig making material for as long as we've been wearing wigs. the hair used is usually from people hired to grow their hair out and the hair is very carefully kept until it's shorn. A lot of hair used in the beauty industry is human hair. or camel hair or yak hair and then of course the mohair that we use for our dolls.

I have to say tho, i don't think human hair would be the right scale for dolls, it's not quite fine enough. I made one out of wefts and it would not lay nicely.

    9. I like human hair for human wigs and extensions, but the strands are the wrong size for dolls, they aren't fine enough. If they were, I'd get hair and make my own wigs, I like the way human hair styles, since you don't have to worry about melting it with heat or anything, or worry about the products you use on it.

Alas, it's not the right size for dolls, unless you have some of the very big 80 or 90cm ones, then it might do well enough. (yes, someone makes a 90cm doll, AoD I believe.)

    10. I have a BEAUTIFUL human-hair wig for my yo-SD made by Sunny World. I love it soooo much <3

It's not the wrong size for my yo girl at all, and it's actually much more easily styled and combed and generally taken care of than any of my non-human hair wigs.

I want to get more Sunny World wigs very soon. I hope all my dolls can have human hair wigs some day....for yo & tiny sized kids, I haven't seen a problem with these kind of wigs at all ^^

    11. I think it's nice to have human hair on dolls. :)
Personally, I think it would also make a very profound connection between owner and doll if the doll were to have hair from the owner.
I don't mind synthetic wigs. I'm either or, doesn't matter to me, truthfully. But human hair on dolls doesn't creep me out in the least.

    12. For some inexplicable reason, it does creepy me out. I know it's not dirty. I know there aren't diseases on it. I know it can't hold head lice. I don't know why but the idea of a human hair wig (for dolls or for my own head) just really creeps me out. I can't explain it. It's completely irrational.

    13. I have absolutely no problem with human hair wigs. Me, my daughters, and even my mother have either had our hair styled in braids with it (my children) or have used wigs with it (my mother and I). It's very nice and I think having a BJD wig that can be styled with our own products with no ill side effects is perfect.

    14. Personally, I have a doll who is currently wearing a wig made from human hair. Why? I made it myself and did not want to use synthetic hair because I wanted a specific color. A lot of the pinks on the internet have a slight orangy-hue. I only wanted pure pink so I went ahead and did it. It is not disgusting. The only weird part was going to the beauty store multiple times to buy large amounts of hair. I think someone may of thought I was crazy, but whatever. I don't see why it is such a big deal. It's a doll, and it's hair. I can dye it and straighten it and that was the main reason I got it.

    15. Yes, the thought of human hair wigs does gross me out. If others like to use them on their dolls, I don't have a problem with it, but I refuse to buy them. Everytime I see them for sale, I think, "Yuuuck!" *_* I prefer mohair or synthetic.

    16. It does creep me out because I would always be thinking how it was gotten and who it belonged to. For the same reason I also don't like fur or leather I prefer synthetic. But I do think its fine for other people to use real hair if they like that better.

    17. I wouldn't like it. I wouldn't mind making a wig from my hair but I would not want one from someone else's hair. It's not only for my dolls, I don't think I'd willingly wear a wig made from another person's hair myself.

Mine are synthetic but funnily one of my friends asked me the other day "So... how's it going with your dolls with human hair?" Guess it looks the same to most people?

    18. To be honest I think it's kinda gross especially if the hair is not yours. I'm not too sure why it grosses me out though, but for some reason I just think it doesn't belong there.

    19. I think it depends on what you want to do with it I guess?

If I was to get one of the bigger SD dolls (70-90 cm) I guess I would actually really consider getting human hair... but only if I wanted the dolls to be very realistic.

It wouldn't freak me out if someone's doll was wearing human hair wig, because, really, so much hair gets wasted at the hair dressers every day that I think it would be much better to use for something liek a doll wig ^^

    20. I've made my own human hair wigs with pretty good success! I had a girl who needed purple hair, and I could not find a wig that worked for her, so I went out to a wig-making supply store and bought wefts/extensions and made my own. The hair I used was really fine, so it actually laid down nicely and looked natural ;) I no longer have the doll the wigs went with, but I still have the wigs. So, needless to say, I have no problem with human hair wigs. I usually buy fiber/fur ones, just because they are less time consuming than making my own :)
