Your take on wigs made from human hair

Aug 28, 2011

    1. I say no. It kind of creeps me out to know that it's actually someones hair, someone I don't know. I also don't really like wigs made of animal fur of any sort. As it is now, I only buy synthetic doll wigs, and I don't see that changing.

    2. I have never seen a human hair wig that i was impressed with. I think that if i found one that was very nice I would probably buy one. But so far synthetic is fine for me.

    3. I wouldn't be opposed to a human hair wig... provided it is the style that I am looking for. It is not any different from using animal hair in wigs - both are hair. So far, I have found animal hair wigs a little disappointing (They show their origin very clearly when photos are taken) and that the synthetic wigs usually lack the 'spring' of human hair. It's not particularly freaky to use a human hair wig for a bjd... of course, that is dependant on the supplier of the hair. :| Human hair wigs seem to be less-regulated than animal hair wigs... so I'd worry about the 'cleanliness' of a human hair wig if the supplier is not clear about the hygiene quality of the source.

    4. I wouldn't have a problem with it. It would only freak me out if I found that the hair had been forcibly taken by a mad wig maker armed with a shaver. If the hair is purchased commercially, then it's been sanitized and I like the idea of being able to wash it and style it regularly and easily.

    5. I find it unsettling mainly because I don't know the person, or their backstory, or where the hair has been. If I made it from my hair I would feel better but I wouldn't because it still fells weird.

    6. The tale "wigs are made from dead people's hair" is really popular among my classmates. What'd you do if you woke up at midnight to see a gloomy stranger standing next to your doll begging you to give her hair back? :?

    7. I dont have any human hair wig, but i think its ok to have human hair on dolls. For me they dont look to real with them.

    8. I see no reason for myself to be disturbed at the idea of a wig made from human hair.
After all many wigs for humans are made of human hair and when it comes down to it a wig is really just a wig whether for a doll or human.
Thing is, I wouldn't be willing the pay the extra cash I'm sure people would want for these human hair wigs. Especially if it's not something I'm all that crazy about.

    9. there are wigs made of HUMAN HAIR!?

now...as a whole I don't find that too creepy...but I do think it's a bit much when someone makes a wig out of their OWN hair for their OWN doll...that's taking it a bit far. one thing that does come to mind, from a material point of veiw is that hair 'dies' so to speak. it gets tattered, brital, split ends, that kind of thing. I can imagine the hair would sort of lose it's luster after a while and you'd need a new one. so personally I'd rather a synthetic wig....to be completely honest, I prefer fur wigs over all else. :D so fun to style.

    10. The idea creeps me out to be honest. Human hair on a doll's head sounds very ~voodoo~ to me. >_>;; But for human hair to be used for human wigs, that's fine with me.

    11. That would a bit creeps me out. I used to have a human hair extension and my sister made fun of me that "Whose hairs?? Are you sure that it's not coming from someone's corpse?? Make sure its owner doesn't come and get you ha ha ha" (she's so mean -*-) after that when ever I saw human wigs or doll wigs state that compose of human hair, I would always think about what my sister said.

    12. Human hair... the idea is kinda creepy to me, a little too close to Doll Master or something equally supersticious. I'm a faux-fur wig girl myself, I can never get synthetic to style how I want ^^;

    13. I... just don't know. I mean, if I found a very nice human hair wig, yea, I'd use it on my doll. If it just did not look right, I wouldn't use it. I'd still be wary though about putting one on my doll. As somebody else said in this thread, human hair tends to be a high-maintenance thing.

    14. I think hair is generally first bought then processed, so it's all right. In the first place, it is far easier to obtain hair from scraps at a hair salon, or something, then to say, dig graves or something for hair, so I don't think anyone would do it, even from a purely economical standpoint...

That said, it is more expensive, so you must like it enough to justify the extra cost.

    15. to quote some celebrity i dont remember the name of (and im paraphraseing as idont rememebr the EXACT quote)
"how is it that one can consider hair pretty, brush it, stroke it, and even go so far as to kiss another person, on the head. but as soon as one of those litle buggers gets free, its like it carries the plague?"

Human hair does not freak me out, but i wouldn't use it as there isnt that much benefite versus costs.

    16. The pro side to this con is that you can at least use your own shampoo without worrying about how it may effect the wig. Can use a flat iron or curling iron without worrying about the same damaging effects as with synthetic..and can equally use products or dyes that would ruin a man made material wig. Con side of my plus sides though, if the hair used is naturally curly, wavy, or has red tones you may have to constantly style it.

I personally have no real preference. I think real hair would be pretty fun to work with for a wig, but wouldn't want to get it from just anywhere. IE, I would use my own, or hair from a friend who's ok with their hair being used in that manner.

My only issue with human hair wigs is although it may be clean and safe, I like to know where my hair is coming from. Hair sold for wig use, you can't talk to them about how they have to take care of their own hair and get a heads up on what to expect.

Generally, I have to say I prefer wigs made of kanekalon, fake fur, or other synthetic material based on the above possible concerns.

    17. This might seem super silly but the reason I wouldn't put someone's hair as a doll wig.
Is I'm creeped out by the idea of someone turning the doll into some sort of voodoo doll.
But I am not grossed out by it ;D :3

    18. I think I'm starting to piece together the reason why I'm not crazy about human hair wigs for dolls, but I am OK with human hair wigs for people. I think it's because I see human hair doll wigs as going too far in terms of how much I'm willing to do with my own dolls.

I have no issue with the general practice; it's just something that I, personally, am not willing to do.

    19. Totally not creeped out by it.

I'm extremly rational, and an atheist. I see no reason why it should be creepy. If the hair was unwashed, then I would want to be told so I don't touch it, lol... but otherwise there's no creep factor involved.

If someone went out of their way to make up a backstory... like it's the hair from a bizarre, ancient human sacrifice, or they scalped someone for it theeeeen, I might be slightly creeped, but not because of the hair, because of the creepy backstory. lol

    20. I laughed out loud when I read how you started your answer because it explained exactly how I feel. Only I would possibly have used many words to explain it. Those 3 letters do all the work.

"ACK..." --- kind of down in the bottom of my throat.

I have that knee jerk reaction too. Something like the invisible personal-space boundary that we all carry unconsciously -- you know it is there when someone gets into it, and there is a reaction from somewhere...this ACK, is louder but I think it is stored in the same place in my brain. Haaa

I read a lot about human hair wigs, and all the other items used, as it falls into my hundreds of interests in trying to make things for my dolls myself. Even watched some YouTube video showing the quality and versatility of the hair -- from some human somewhere... Apparently it can be kept as clean, if not cleaner than some of the other choices.

Intellectually I can shut down any explainable reason for that ACK feeling, but it is still there, just more like ,,,,ack,,,OKAY, not really, come on...

I bought some antique mohair doll wigs from France and real human hair doll wigs. The antique mohair is sooo...soft! The caps are in wonderful condition. Just as I wonder who the person was with the er...DNA to match the human hair, I wonder if a doll in a far off land ever wore these wigs.

As to cleanliness. My cousin raised alpacas -- we are talking about animals who live outside, and, um...have sex. At least their owners who want to have, or sell babies, hope they have sex. ;)

Unfortunately, my cousin sold her alpacas just before I became a doll collector. DRAT!

Now I wonder if it is a fact that should be disclosed if I should take a doll visiting, while wearing somebody's hair on his or her head. Of course I WOULD TELL if I were to sell one of those wigs. I haven't had time to play with them yet. I'll have to look for a thread about it here.

Maybe off topic of doll, but still about the human hair...I've had chemo and had to wear a wig for some time. I would have the same ACK feeling about wearing human hair on my own head. I didn't. But I sure got a LOT of compliments on my "hair cut" -- the wig I got looked great. Evidently no one could tell it was synthetic.
