Your take on wigs made from human hair

Aug 28, 2011

    1. What I am asking is does it freak you out? Why or why not?
It kinda does gross me out, but I'd still buy it/wear it if it was the look I wanted with the price I wanted. Its kinda just getting over the fact "this was attached to someone's *head* at one point." However, if it was rejected from locksoflove or something like that, then I think it would be a waste if it wasn't turned into something like a doll wig.

Do you proudly tell others that your doll is wearing human hair? Or do you sweep that little detail under the rug?
I would probably sweep that detail under the rug. I'd probably avoid saying what type of fiber it is unless the person is DYING to know what it is and where to buy it.

How do your friends and/or family view the idea?
      Its "gross" and "creepy!"

    2. I have no issue with human hair wigs. I like to redesign my wigs with heat styling and human hair is the best for that. Women have been wearing human hair extensions for years. In India and other parts of Asia, the selling of hair is a billion dollar industry. I am really not sure why this should even be a duscussion thread. If you like human hair wigs you will use hem and if you don't you wont. I feel that about sums it up, wouldn't you say?

    3. I have no problems with wigs made of human hair. It might actually be a really good wig to get because you can then style it like you would your own. Human hair is used to make wigs for people, so why not for dolls as well? In fact, human hair is used for weaves and extensions and many people the world over have no qualms about wearing it. As long as the hair is cleaned and sanitized and was given up by its host willingly, then it is all well and good.

    4. It would make me feel uncomfortable. Mostly because voodoo dolls need the hair of the person inside them to "work". I've watched to much occult stuff.:doh

    5. The concept of a human-hair wig for a BJD doesn't freak me out, just like wigs for people that are made from human hair don't freak me out. I view it as nothing more than another resource to be used. I don't understand be disturbed about human-hair wigs, or someone using such a wig. Maybe I'm not sensitive, or I just view humans in a different way from most people, but I don't see what's so sacred or gross about human hair. Okay, well, I can see why it would be gross if it isn't properly cleaned/processed, but if you're getting the wig from yourself, I'd hope you'd clean it. And we know the pros clean it and so on and so forth.

So the hair was on a living human being. Plenty of things we use in daily life come from living creatures. It's not much different. Humans are animals, too, and our hair can be used just as well as a sheep's coat for wool.

    6. I use all kinds of fibers in my wig art ---from animal fibers -- alpaca, lambswool, mohair, merino, corridale, etc. to plant fibers---bamboo silk, banana silk, etc. to synthetic fibers--nylon, saran, angelina, etc. I don't know why--especially since I use animal fibers--but the thought of using human hair makes my skin crawl. My daughter was just saying how that is so bizarre that is because she finds animals to be less unsanitary than humans.

I was told once that human hair has oils in it that can damage your dolls. Don't know if that's true or not. I will never know because I can't bring myself to use human hair. Just my personal opinion.

    7. I think that if a wig that I really liked and could afford was made out of human hair, and I could be guaranteed the hair was volunteerd willingly, I would not let it sop me. I probably would not use my own hair though. Or maybe. I don't know.

I do see some benefits of having human hair for the wigs though. Not only is it easy to style, but it's also soft and nice. On the other hand human hair gets really brittle after it is cut off and if it's not treated with stuff.

However if someone else were to tell me their dolls wig was made of human hair, I would maybe be really freaked out by it. But I don't know. Never met anyone with a doll that had a human hair wig.

    8. It doesn't bother me but I am more concern in maintenance and I heard that the oil in human hair may affect the doll head especially resin. I do not know if this true but (for now) take what looks good on my doll irregardless if it is synthetic or natural as the basis for getting it not the source or where it comes from.

    9. I'm totally ok with human hair wig. They are very easy to style .. you can even dye the wig to the color your like..

    10. I don't like that idea. Of course I'm a cosmetology student and I don't like the thought of our manikins having real hair

    11. I don't see the problem with human hair, other than it's got to be really expensive. :sweat
I also asked my boyfriend, as we own the dolls together, and he just shrugged and added a "why not".

    12. It never occurred to me to be grossed out by a human hair doll wig. Many people use mohair but I don't hear anyone say they are grossed out by that. That fiber came from a dirty animal that never had a shampoo in it's life until the mohair was shorn off of it. I would think that people would be far more grossed out by mohair wigs with the leatherized skin as the base for the wig.

    13. Have to admit that the thought of human hair on one of my dolls makes me feel a little uncomfortable. I'd always be wondering whose hair it was (as it certainly wouldn't be my own)!!

    14. Oil is produced by the skin of your scalp, not your hair. Human hair goes through several treatments before it can be sold, so im sure and residual oils are removed during those treatments.
Hair is dead, a never was alive so it doesnt bother me. I have more of a problem with animal hair to tell u the truth. People choose to sell their hair, animals dont have a choice.
I have human hair bonded extensions myself. Remy hair, which is suppose to be the best, but I prefer the feel of my dolls sythetic wig. :/ lol

    15. Hair is dead. No matter if it's animal or human. It's just hair. There is no living matter...no harm done (if there is no SKIN involved!).
People use real human hair (Remy) in wigs and extensions all the time..it's a big business. People sell their long hair from all over the world for this business. Sometimes it ends up in the doll world. I have no problem with it. It's all business and keratin. lol!

    16. I'm sorry if this has already been said, but it doesn't really freak me out to think of a doll having a wig made of human hair. I do, however, think that it is somewhat wasteful when there are people out there who really need wigs- i.e. those who have battled with cancer and had to shave their heads because of hair loss from the treatments. I would much rather see human hair used for wigs that are going to be worn by actual humans.

    17. It makes me feel uncomfortable. >.> Its the whole "I wonder whose head this used to be on..." but I mean I have nothing against it. I actually am in the midst of growing my hair out to donate it. But I am a very squeamish person to begin with so I might be the wrong person to ask ^^"

    18. I personally have no problems with human hair doll wigs. I mean, it's easier to dye and manage a human hair wig than a synthetic hair wig.

    19. They don't freak me out simply because people do it all the time. I see women walk around with other women's hair in their heads, transplants are parts that come from other people, and lets not forget people fornucate to procreate with other people! So what if someone owns a wig of human hair for their doll, it's not like the doll is wearing human leather or the hair was freshly ripped from a person's scalp.

I don't brag about the material of my doll's wig, but I do own a human hair wig, and I made it myself, and no, it's not mine. If someone asks me what comprises the wig, I'll tell them without hesitation.

My parents honestly do not care, one way or the other, and nor do my friends.

    20. ??? I can sit on my hair. Guarantee I very well may make a doll wig. Human hair wigs are the best for styling, after all. Oh, I've donated to Locks of Love btw.
I prefer fur to fake as well, but it's hard to work with I think. So most of the wigs I have aren't real fur or hair.
Certainly does NOT freak me out. People have been using this material for millenia - why would it?
& I also have NO problem telling people - I don't mind getting into arguments w/PETA types....
