Your take on wigs made from human hair

Aug 28, 2011

    1. I don't mind as people always wear wigs or extensions made from human hair nowadays. When I first heard about human hair wigs for humans I thought it was a little weird (because for some reason I imagined them taking it from dead bodies!!), so it creeped me out!! But now I know there are different types - human hair can me "machine made" but have the same properties of human hair etc. I guess some people enjoy the properties of human hair as it can be fllat iron and curled so as long as it makes them happy.

    2. I think the use of human hair for charity or for doll wigs is fine, even admirable, but, personally, it really just creeps me out.

I don't want someone else's body parts near me or anything I am handling.

I've seen some incredible jewelry and even lace work made from human hair, but no matter how gorgeous the art is, still creepy.

    3. By profession I am a wig maker (humans mostly) my work ranges from film& TV to cancer patients. I use both Human and synthetic in my work, each have there own merits. I often find people have misconceptions of both. I personally like the idea of playing with my dolls hair I also colour and high light the way I want it to look, but there are things you can do with synthetic and fur that just cant be achieved in human.

    4. I have a few big Himstedt dolls at home that all have human hair (they're not wigged dolls) so I am used to that, in fact I like it, they're a very nice quality.

    5. I'm not a fan. I like knowing where that hair was before I touch it.....now wigs for charity is a different story. For a doll.....it seems like it could have gone to a better cause. Just my opinion.

    6. I think it would creep me out too much. It nauseates me to see hair off of someone's head, like on the floor at the salon when someone's gotten a cut and the hair hasn't been swept yet. I don't even like cleaning the hair out of my own brush, so there's no way I'd want to touch some stranger's hair.

    7. The funny thing about this question to me is that, when I first saw dolls, I thought the wigs WERE real hair. It wasn't until later when I bought my own doll that I learned otherwise. So I guess it doesn't matter to me if someone uses human hair or synthetic fiber wigs for their dolls.

If someone made the wig themself out of their own hair, now that might be pretty cool.

    8. I'm certainly not creeped out at the thought of having a wig made of human hair but I doubt I'd ever get one myself, if only because they sound kind of expensive and I doubt I'd find one I omgneeded enough that it would warrant the price. I'll stick with synthetics ahahahah

    9. I guess my 60cm Obitsu, Lady Xanax is a very "icky" doll indeed. She is the 5 dollar head that came with the doll when I ordered her body. While waiting to find a resin head I liked for the body I figured why not play around a bit with the cheap vinyl head. I had some hair from a recent mohawk-shaving that wasn't quite long enough to donate so I rooted MY hair into a mohawk on the head. She later got horror/ gore modded. Lady Xanax doesn't show herself around here often 'cause she's pretty gory. It does creep me out a little bit to have my hair IN a doll... a gore doll. A little too vodou for total comfort. It's clean, I can wash it 'cause I glued it in. For maintenance I run my own hairbrush through her hair every now and then to coat it with it's own oils. She's about 4 years old and her hair is still the same as the hair still on my head. So...yeah, it's a little borderline "squik" there even though she's mine. She never got a resin head; she will always be Lady Xanax.

A note on her name. I am not promoting drug use. It's just the name of a song.

    10. Actually, I think that sounds like a pretty interesting idea. I would likely tell people if that were the case! I'd even use my own hair if given the chance ( I have too much anyway) Alas, most of my doll characters have random, funky colored hair so I don't believe it could ever work. Attempting to dye it then put it on a dolls head would likely stain them! TT-TT

    11. I wouldn't go out of my way to get my dolls a wig made out of real hair, but it wouldn't gross me out or weird me out in the slightest if I encountered or owned a wig made of real human hair.

I guess I've been adjusted over the years. My father is an antique jeweller and he frequently acquires old bracelets, necklaces, brooches and the like made out of real human hair. At first I thought it was creepy but over the years I got over it and started looking at the items for the beauty of them.

Similarly if someone wanted to use human hair to improve the aesthetics of their doll I really wouldn't mind.

    12. [paragraph]Well, a friend on another community just made her doll a wig out of her own hair... And when I saw that wig on the doll, I suddenly regretted not saving the 10 or so inches I cut off my hair 3 months ago. (At which time I also hadn't gotten to spend a week of time around my sister's dolls, so wasn't in the hobby yet, so couldn't have thought of it.)Of course when I realized just how much hair I'd had cut off, I also regretted not sending it to locks of love, but my hair didn't do well at long lengths, probably only 20% of it was actually 10 inches past where it would have been cut anyway. (Which is why I cut it - to stop the dry crispiness!) However, while it wouldn't have been much for Locks of Love, it could have made a nice wig for a doll, and with the ability to dye it whatever color I want... Yeah, would have been nice. Too late now![/paragraph][paragraph]So, overall I'm not bothered by the idea of human hair wigs for dolls, however if I were to own one, I think I'd want it made out of my own hair. Then I know where it's been, and what's been done to it, etc.[/paragraph]

    13. I don't think it would freak me out,I'll very happy if my dolls wear the wig made by MY OWN hair(but it is difficult for me to make the wig,and there is no one who can make these kind of wig)
I wont buy a human hair wig which made by other's hair,it makes me unconfortable if my doll wear it.
Because I think if my doll wear the wig which made by my hair makes me and my doll closer.(well,it just a felling~)We also have some similar clothes, shoes.
Also,if I my doll wears the wig made by ma hair I'll tell others proudly:)
If other people's doll wears a human hair wig,I wont bother me, it just a wig~

    14. I wouldn't mind it if I knew it was ethically sourced... I remember reading something about hair extensions being made from the hair of kidnapped or trafficked women which has always made me feel concerned...

Animal hair is kind of the same... Also for things like fur and leather...

    15. I'm rather meh, so long as it looks good and doesn't require extravagant care, and of course isn't nasty. Though admittedly, I'd much prefer that the hair goes to someone who needs it rather than sitting on a doll's head.

    16. I love it. I made a wig out of my boyfriend's hair. He initially cut it to send to locks of love, but he forgot to send it in and then they thought it was too old. So I used it.

I pretty much don't take that wig off Aubreigh now, even though she's supposed to have black hair and his is dirty blonde/brown. It's so much softer than the others, and it has a nice wavy bounce to it that the others don't have.

It hasn't needed much upkeep. It was sitting in a bag in his room for 2 years before I used it. After I sewed it, I washed it with organic shampoo and conditioner to tame the fly-aways a bit. But it hasn't needed anything special, and it hasn't faded or anything, I held it to his head and it's the same color.

My hair is just past my bum now, when it gets to knee length I think I'm going to cut it back up to bum to make it a wig. Not sure yet though.

My sister and my mom thought it was super creepy. But my Nana and my boyfriend's family thought it was really cool.

I would probably make human hair wigs for commissions if it wasn't so expensive. No way I'm paying $135 for enough hair to make half a wig. D:

My boyfriend's niece (5yr) really likes Aubreigh and treats her awesome, so I figured I could make her doll a wig out of her own hair if her mom decided to buy her one. I think that would be so cute. :)

    17. I'm kindof on the fence about this...personally, it kindof makes me uneasy... But on the neutral side, I figure if they're well taken care of, they probably look very nice and are probably really soft... ^^;

    18. the only I have to say about it, is that when I see one that I like It's usually too expensive for me to buy.
      -_-

    19. While I have no problem with other people doing this for their dolls, the issues I personally have with it are:

      1. How can you be sure where the hair is from? If it's your own or someone you know, that's one thing. But as has been mentioned, many hair extensions come from vulnerable people and inject money into an illegal and unethical system. I would never want to support that.

      2. The scale is wrong. Techincally, a hair from an MSD head would have to be a quarter the width of a human hair, and unless you have extremely fine hairs (as opposed to extremely fine hair) the way it falls will be too stiff to look natural. Synthetic hairs tend to be finer than human hairs, I've found.

      3. I couldn't use my own hair because my hair is very split-ended and the bottom six inches or so pretty much has a life of its own. Not to mention in its lifetime it's been dyed all the colours of the rainbow, pretty much, and I wouldn't want to stain my doll with dye. Also, none of my dolls have wine-red hair. I wouldn't use someone else's hair because:

      4. Superstition. There are beliefs that the spirits of the dead return to wherever their mortal remains are- including their hair. While I don't believe this, the idea freaks me out enough to put me off.

These are just my opinions and they only cover my own dolls (and hair). What other people want to do with theirs is fine by me.

    20. It'd freak me out if it was the owner's hair, because that seems rather obsessive

but the only thing that comes to mind for me is how expensive human haired wigs are compared to synthetic xD
