Your take on wigs made from human hair

Aug 28, 2011

    1. I don't see how it's obsessive, my doll is wearing a wig made from my hair right now.
I got a short haircut, and had a ponytail that was too short to make a human size wig. So what else could I do with it? Either throw it away or make a wig.
Personally I find it less creepy cause I know where it's been.

    2. I'm indifferent on it. I wouldn't really buy a wig from anyone that I don't know because you have no clue where the hair has been or if the person had been around any viruses. I would only really use my own hair to make a dollie wig or even a friends hair if they ever had their hair cut short enough that I'd have enough to use.

    3. I, too, find it a little creepy, but then again I gag when I have to clean my own hairbrush... It's just a thing, I guess! *_*

    4. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it. I've donated my hair to locks of love, if I had to wear a wig I'd prefer real hair, and, if I knew how, I'd probably make a wig of human hair for one of my dolls. Human hair just feels and looks nicer in my opinion. I don't see anything nasty about it if it has been properly cleaned.

    5. I started with antique dolls, so human hair is normal to me, with antique dolls synthetic wigs are frowned upon because they look out of place. For a long time if it was a quality (non play) doll the wig would be either mohair or human hair because sythetics looked cheap or plastic. This has changed with the nicer ABJD wigs. I prefer synthetic for the ABJD, its not out of place and the strands can be made more fine and flexible. Human hair too thick and coarse for ABJD most the time, (I like it best for my large antique dolls though its easier than mohair)

    6. I own a wig made of human hair and I think it's beautiful. I've showed it to people and some were a little bit weary about it but at the end they touched it. One of them said it was cool. Other person on the other hand freaked out and looked at the wig as if it was a cockroach.

    7. The only problem I can see with using wigs made of human hair would be that they'd probably require more maintenance. As someone else pointed out, they need to be moisturized frequently otherwise they'll dry out. I'm not sure I'm willing to do all that extra care when I could just get a perfectly good synthetic wig. :sweat

    8. I think if the hair was nice an fine as opposed to coarse I would always choose the natural material over synthetic. I have spent lots of time in the beauty supply looking for hair to re-root some of the other dolls I have. You can really see the difference in the human hair when seeing them next to the synthetics.

My favorite though is mohair. Very close to human hair, but super fine.

    9. Yeah, why steal hair from dead people when living people are growing and cutting it all the time? Now I did hear about dead people and/or killing people to steal their skeletons to sell and that was real & scary.

Back on topic, I can't explain it- human hair wigs don't necessarily bother me but someone using their own hair for their doll seems strange to me. It just, personally, odds me out. Then again it is a very "green" approach to dressing your doll!

    10. I think human hair wigs are kind of creepy... BJDs get the title of being creepy already, and human hair wigs just intensify that creepiness. I think synthetic fibers also look nicer, but that may be just me. And Mohair is wonderful, as it is much cleaner and softer. Again, just me, but I don't like the idea of human hair.

    11. I tried to make a wig of my own hair for my doll. It was interesting. Unfortunately due to the lack of time and decreased interest I gave up the idea for some time. But it was fun doing it. I still have the wig unfinished and hope I will continue with it someday again :)

    12. One of Aisling's wigs is made with real human hair. It's no biggie for me, except the price and the lack of color range.

    13. I love this thread! I love finding out that some people think harvesting hair from a corpse is easier/ cheaper/more desirable for the average doll wig maker that just paying a living human for some!!! What virus could survive in Human hair, particularly after it's been harvested and made into a wig then stored in a sealed bag or whatever? Is there any germ that could survive that process that lives in hair?

It's hilarious the fears we have when someone says it's human hair rather than synthetic - but then I guess those weird fears you can't quite put your finger on are often irrational, and it doesn't help knowing it.

I wouldn't have a problem as long as the hair used wasn't coarse, because I would find it a lot easier to style and restyle human hair than synthetic. Just like doing my own hair... but less of it :)

    14. The idea of having human hair as a doll wig freaks me out a little bit. (Not saying its wrong, its just not for me:sweat) It almost feels like we're breaking a rule about dolls and trying to make them as real or human as possible. the idea of a human hair wig digs straight into the uncanny valley, epecially because real people wear human hair wigs for various reasons. Besides they take a lot of extra care and you can get fantastic colors from synthetics. Long story short: maybe a bit TOO real for comfort.

    15. I am a Cosmetologist so let me explain a few things. Human hair is VERY expensive (that being said I would still buy it.) It is not hard to come by just certain types are rarer then others. Sythetic hair can be just as nice if not better for actual human wigs and extenstions. That being said I think human hair wigs fo dolls is artistic and wonderful!

    16. I would probably not buy one, but mostly because it would need more care than a wig made of synthetic fiber.

    17. Not really. I have a bunch, one of which is over 2 years old. It says on the weft packages to condition it once a week or once a month to keep it healthy. But I haven't had the need to yet even with the oldest one, and they are all just as soft and silky as ever.

I think when it says to put all sorts of stuff on it is just if a person is going to be wearing it and it will get oily.

    18. I wouldn't want a human hair wig.
Im one of those people who thinks that hair is quite gross it it's not attatched to someones body (and sometimes even then). The thought of it growing out of someones head, gross.

    19. Most human hair wigs that you buy commercially are highly processed to eliminate the possibility of dandruff, lice or the natural oils going rancid. Their upkeep isn't the same as the hair on our heads because it lacks the constant production of oil and damage.

Human hair wigs are similar to mohair wigs. Mohair wigs require maintenance especially those with the skin still attached. It must be lightly oil every few months to keep it from drying and cracking. Human hair wigs for dolls would require some maintenance but it's not as expensive as what we spend on our actual hair. Where as human hair wigs meant for humans require much more attention because it's actually getting dirty where as on a doll it isn't.

I don't really see an obsessive/gross factor as it's not much different than mohair or other natural fiber wigs. Not only that but human hair was a common choice for adorning dolls before synthetics were available.

If a wig were made from the hair of someone's head without any processing then I probably wouldn't buy it. Unprocessed hair can carry parasites as well as fungi and disease and all of these can be contagious.

Although, I can see how it could be an inexpensive way to make a wig and would photograph nicely because of the fine nature of the follicles and texture.

    20. I don't particularly have a problem with human hair, but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy a wig made with human hair, I way prefer the synthetic ones to be honest xD
