Your take on wigs made from human hair

Aug 28, 2011

    1. I don't care for human hair wigs on ABJD, but that's because these dolls are in a small scale, and generally human hairs are too large to look in-scale with them. That's also why I prefer wigs with finer fibers (synthetics like Monique Gold and JpopDolls, faux-fur, rabbit fur, tibetan lambskin, mohair, alpaca, angora goat hair, and the like). I don't like large-fibered synthetic wigs, either.

    2. Compared to most synthetic fibers, human hair is expensive, difficult to work with, hard to style, and a hassle to maintain. All in all, I prefer saran or kanekalon for my "realistic" wigs, and of course faux fur for my "anime-style" wigs.

    3. Oh I love this question because I have a friend who is totally freaked by human hair wigs.. and I mean completely freaked. For me, I could care less. I am not a wig maker, but I approached my hairdresser about saving some discarded hair extensions which I promptly traded with another friend of mine who works on re-roots of off topic dolls in exchange for some of her work on a doll of my own. The extensions themselves are quite expensive and getting my hands on some hair for her was a serious WIN WIN situation. I didn't have to shell out cash for the work being done on my doll and her custom doll with human hair commanded a much higher selling price as a result. Okay, should I have posted this comment in the 'how to make doll money thread'??
Personally, I'm not all that fond of human hair wigs, and prefer mohair/alpaca or heat resistant synthetic. I'm not repulsed by it whatsoever and could never figure out why hair is considered such a great thing of beauty when attached and such a source of disgust when it becomes unattached. We are all such varied and funny creatures

    4. Great information and viewpoints...thanks for the insights.:)

    5. Yeah I would be one of those that are kind of freaked out by human hair wigs. I can't explain it or why, but it feels gross to me. And this is from someone who has studied osteology/archeology and dealt with many many human remains like bones. Basically two things I do not like to touch are teeth and human hair.

    6. Do you think anyone would buy human hair to make their own doll wig if someone sold it here in the marketplace? Is that even something you'd be allowed to sell?

    7. The BJD's are all based on being "real" lol. i have cut my hair so many times and saved some. i had dreadlocks twice and saved them too. i am def going to make a wig out of my hair. possibly make a doll that looks like me..:) again.. fine art interests.

    8. I don't find using human hair for doll wigs creepy at all. If human hair is used for human wigs, then what's wrong with using it for doll wigs? It's just another fiber, for heavens sake, and is thoroughly cleaned in the process of making it into a wig. It has the same likelihood of being handled by not-so-clean hands as synthetic fibers. Using human hair on a doll does not turn it into some kind of a voodoo object. We use animal fibers (mohair, angora, etc.) so why not human hair? As far as I'm concerned, it's another form of recycling...

    9. I am a hairstylist an work a lot with human hair extensions on my clients, so i tried to make a human hair wig for my BJD and it turned out pretty nice! It´s a great way to change the look of your doll without having thousands of different wigs! Creepy? Voodoo? No way! Unfortunately it´s very expensive if you use good quality hair! I love the wig i made and in future i plan to do another and make video about it ^^

    10. I am freaked out by human hair wigs...I'll admit it even though I know the hair is clean and in good shape. HOWEVER...if the wig was made from MY hair I wouldn't be...probably because I know where that hair has been!

    11. I'm essentially indifferent on the subject, if someone told me their doll was wearing a human hair wig it wouldn't bother me at all. Personally, I just wouldn't like to spend the money for my doll to have a human hair wig. I think it would be cool if I could have a wig made for my doll out of my hair and then we would have the exact same hair color. That's just my opinion, everyone is entitled to their own.

    12. I've made well over 1500 wigs and none of them were human hair wigs. The reason is I just can't get past not knowing where the hair came from (possibly a human traffiking victim --which would GREATLY disturb me) or the hygiene that the previous owner had. There are enough tremendous fibers out there to make wigs with that I don't feel like I'm missing out on a thing.

Oh... one more thing...there are natural oils in human hair that I might be concerned that it might do something to my doll's resin.

    13. It doesn't freak me out, the contrary! I like my materials to be the real stuff, so i'm using human hair, mohair, cotton, silk, leather, fur, etc. I think these materials add more depht to a creation.

    14. I wouldn't mind human hair at all. I would know how to take care of it intensely, and it'd be familiar.
I'd want my hair more than anyone else's though. :sweat

    15. I don't have a problem with any wigs except the ones that look's like rugs. I really am not to fond of them, all of those wigs that can with my full set dolls I gave away. That is the great thing about these dolls, and people who have them, we all like what we like, and if we don't like it we just find some one who does, and let them enjoy it. That away nothing go's to waste:D

    16. I guess the only thing I'd feel bad about is the fact the wig could potentially be using hair that could go toward human-sized wigs for people with cancer and the like. But having a human hair wig isn't really that gross. The hair is clean, after all. It's not like you're making a wig out of the hairy rats nests you find when you clean your tub drains or anything, hahaha.

    17. People wear human hair all the time, so I probably wouldn't mind. The hair is cleaned and prepared, so I don't worry about the cleanliness. I wouldn't make it a habit to find them, however. I would only be bothered if I found out the hair was harvested illegally. I don't want my dolls to wear stolen hair.

    18. Why would human hair freak anyone out? Many people grow their hair for wigs made for children that are in Chemo. All the old porcelain BJDs that my grandmother had were wigged in human hair. I really don't see the issue.

    19. I would be fine with it if it was my own hair, but otherwise, I might be a little weary.

    20. I think it is creepy O_O It is someone's body part on your doll's head!
