Your thoughts on fur wigs?

Oct 1, 2013

    1. I used to hate fur wigs. I just could not stand looking at them. But then I got my tiny mermaid doll with her tiny head and I could find a wig that fit her anywhere. So we ordered some wigs from La Esperansa and it got us so fast and had the cutest little pony tail. And I could style it decently well. Honestly, Fur wigs seem to look bad because people just plop them them on their dolls heads and don't bother to style the hair, which is why I didn't like them before.

Would I put fur wigs on the other larger dolls? Probably not. but if I had a character that needed shorter hair or something I could see it.

    2. I had a fur wig and I think there quite nice and easy to style.

    3. Intially I didn't have any interest in synthetic fur wigs because I thought they might look too artificial, not realistic enough. But then I went on Etsy and found several handmade fur wigs that I really liked on there. I purchased my first fur wig for one of my Dollfie's and I am super happy with it, it has just the "alternative" look I was after for that particular doll plus its really soft and pleasant to touch. I have seen some really cheap looking made fur wigs around that I personally wouldn't buy, I had one once sent to me free with a BJD I purchased and it was ghastly. :horror: But like others have already said you can get very good quality fur wigs out there for which I can testify. Yes the wig is rather poofy and a bit like candy floss but it actually looks very quirky and I like it, for some of my dolls it just wouldn't work so I think it can sometimes depend on the doll sculpt and of course personal preference.

    4. I love fur wigs! But I'm really disappointed that they look so huge on MSDs, which is more of a problem for guys than girls. I am always looking at pics of SD guys in fur wigs, thinking, Oh, that looks really good on him! and then I remember that I don't have any SDs and it would look a whole lot poofier on MSDs. :-( But fur wigs can looks really cute on girl MSDs! like the ones made by MonstroDesigns!

    5. I think it depends on your aesthetic. Some people like fur wigs, while others prefer hair. To each his own. (Mine use mostly hair, though.)

    6. Fur wigs are my preference tbh. I can't seem to get into synthetic wigs. As for things like mohair, alpaca, etc I'd like to explore in that direction as I grow in the hobby, but for now fur wigs are both cheaper and something I like, so... if it's not broke why fix it xD

    7. I think it may depend on the doll, too. Some look better with the regular hair wigs, while others look better with fur.

    8. I personally cannot style fur wigs very well, but I've seen a lot of fur wigs that I like. I wish I had the skill to style them where they look somewhat realistic.. So far I have had no luck.

    9. I wasn't too fond of the fur hair look before reading this thread because messy hair really bothers me - but after browsing everyone's opinions & photos I think I've changed my mind! I'll probably stick to fiber wigs for my first few purchases but I feel much more open to trying out fur in the future.

    10. When I got my first ever fur wig, I decided that I absolutely hated them. I'd been iffy on them to start with as I had only seen them on emo or scene dolls, and the one that I got free with my third doll was definitely intended to fit that look. On top of that, it wasn't of a super high quality. I had so much trouble styling it!

Now that I've seen and even bought a couple more fur wigs though, I have to say that I really do love the texture! They're soft, and I prefer handling them over synthetic wigs. While I still think synthetic wigs lend themselves more to certain styles, there's something about them that just doesn't compare!

    11. It really depends. I am not real fan of fibre wigs, but I have few, because sometimes they look better.
I love fur wigs, which are made from real fur. They are variable, mostly super soft and look very realistic. But the problem might be price... and the fact, that you never know, if it will fit your doll or not, unless seller has the same model of a head or you make it yourself. It's frustrating, pay lot of money for beautiful real fur wig, and then don't be able to use it properly, because it doesn't fit. :/

I have two alpaca wigs, which should fit to my doll, but as long as they were did for similar doll head size, but not exactly the same, there is few milimetres difference, and it doesn't fit perfectly and keeps moving on head. On photos, it doesn't have to be visible, but it's real pain experience, that every time you move or pick the doll, her hair falls.

Right now, I bought ton of angora mohair, so I will be making own wigs for my dolls, to make the fit only for them and perfectly. Till that time I am using fibre wigs, which I don't really like, and for boy, who should have shorter hair, fake fur wig. Well I hate fake fur wigs, in fact, but he looked even worse in fibres (and I tried about five on him and all sent away right after.)

Can't wait for some free weekend, which I will be able to do all wigs for my dolls.

    12. I prefer synthetic fibre wigs myself, I'm quite fussy when it comes to wigs. I don't really have a doll character who has fluffy hair and all my characters are girls and I feel like male dolls suit fur wigs a bit more.
