Your thoughts on fur wigs?

Oct 1, 2013

    1. I think they look great on 'teenage/early 20's' dolls, but I don't have any of those yet, except for Erica in my sig who is a lolita girl and would rather die than wear one!

    2. I Think it's quite hard to give an only thought on fur wigs, because the final result depends on the quality more than any other kind of wig, in my opinion.
I've seen wonderfull dolls with fur wigs, especially casual dollies but I've also seen the crappiest ones.

A nice, non-messy quality fur wig can look awesome depending on the character, but a cheap messy fur can really look awful. I don't currently use fur wig on any of my BJD but it does not mean I'll never do :)

    3. I've seen some fur wigs around that have been beautifully styled and look really good on the doll but personally I'm not a big fan of having them for my own dolls, mostly because I struggle with styling them, though I'm sure it's a talent that comes with practice. Mostly I just really like fiber wigs because of how pretty they can be, plus there seems to be a lot less fuss in regards to style. That's not to say that fiber wigs don't come with their own problems (my heart always drops when some of the strands come loose from the wig)

    4. I enjoy looking at other people's dolls wearing fur wigs, but none of my own dolls seem to suit the styles that fur wigs can create. I have also tried mohair wigs and they drive me absolutely batty, so it's fibre wigs for me! I am trying again though with shorter styles that might be easier for me to deal with!

    5. May I ask where did you get the wig.? it is beautiful.

Question. I'm new to all of this so do you suggest I buy a fiber wig to a fur wig for my first doll.? I can see people have different veiws on wigs and I'm now not sure what to get. Please help.

    6. I'm new to this to Niki Jones and the best advice I can give, from my experience so far, is to start looking at lots of other dolls, how they are styled and what can be achieved with different wig types. That's how I came to the conclusion that my character's hair was going to be best created by a fur wig - just from seeing how they look on other dolls, and what can be done with them.

    7. I like both kinds just fine depending on the quality. My Iplehouse Claude, for example, looks so much more in character when sporting fur wigs. I have one from Iplehouse and two from Dollclans (which are wonderful!).

    8. I got the wig from Monstro Designs on Etsy. They're gorgeous wigs. :)

    9. It definitely depends on the fur quality and styling. I've always liked fur wigs, but I went fur crazy when I learned to make my own. There are things you can do with fur that just don't work in the scale for dolls with fiber wigs, it's easier to find certain colors in fur, and it's much less expensive (especially when you make them yourself, ha!).

As for where to buy good fur wigs from, I've bought several from artists here and on Etsy and not gotten a bad one yet! I've also bought some from Ebay. But really, learning to make them was great! I can do whatever I want with them now, and it only takes a little time (and I find it fun and relaxing) and very little skill. I don't sew at all. Wigs are it lol
I think your best bet is to talk to people who have wigs you like and find out where they come from, check out the options, and go from there!

    10. It depends.

I used to HATE fur wigs, I thought they looked so crappy and cheap. But then I realized WHY I felt that way--fur wigs need to be brushed and styled. A fur wig pulled out of a bag and stuck on a doll's head just doesn't look good. It looks more like a wild hat than hair. And it takes away from the whole doll. A doll could have a gorgeous faceup, pretty sculpt, awesome clothing...then plop an untamed fur wig on its head, and all that beauty just goes out the window for me.

However, get a good quality fur wig (soft, proper fit, not frizzy or matted) style it well, and I think on the right doll, it can be very very cute! Five of my dolls now have fur wigs (most from BeachgirlNikita), and I think they work better for the characters than any fiber could.

    11. For me, it really depends on the look you have in mind. I like fur wigs for shorter, messier hair, though one of my girls has a slightly longer fur wig that I keep smoothed down most of the time. I also think that you have to know what you're doing, or it's gonna look bad. I've always found it easy to style fur wigs, and it's easy to learn pretty quick, but sometimes you see a fur wig and it's like 'How did they manage to get that wrong?' Still, I don't often see those, and they usually are just beginners who get better within a week or two. Then there's the quality of the fur! I haven't gotten any bad ones yet, but I've found plenty of 'craft' fur at fabric stores that just feels cheap and styles and sheds horribly, and I've seen a few wigs for sale online that look kinda like that stuff, so I stay away from those. But in general, I like them!

    12. Honestly I like them....but only on boys, I would never put a fur wig on any of my girl dolls, which is just because of you know...this complex I have about hair. Boys have short okay looking hair, the girls have long beautiful hair. That, and just, I think they look very strange on female dolls, and conversely, I think male dolls look best in fur wigs.

    13. I think it depends on the personal style of the doll. Different personalities are suited for different styles. My off topic bad boy doll has a fur wig, and it looks great! However, I'd never stick it on his fashionista sister, it just wouldn't make sense!

    14. Gah... NO, I do NOT think that fur wigs look cheap! Geesh, what is all the focus on looking cheap/expensive??? It's all totally subjective, depending on everyone's own opinions and opinions are going to be all over the place! You can't rely on them at all, because of that.

Just use the kinds of wigs YOU want on your own doll! Who cares what some other person thinks??? They don't own you or your dolls!

I happen to like how fur wigs looks on some dolls. There are some fur wigs that look better than others, but it all depends on what kind of look you're going for! There are some fiber wigs that have wig-caps showing or that frizz up easily--and they can be expensive or inexpensive, so price is not a factor in something looking good or not...

    15. The more basic ones are, but the ones I was looking at were rainbow and that and as I recall they were like $20, 30 some of them depending upon which ones? I liked them, the one rainbow wig a whole lot actually, but the wigs plus shipping it was just too much for me. It's been a while since I looked, admittedly, but I'm pretty sure it was Monstro, sounds familiar.

    16. I love furwigs on SDs and MSDs but for the tiny dolls I prefer fibre wigs just because furwigs make their heads look bigger. I'm talking about boy dolls mainly because that's what I collect, for the one girl I had she used fibre wig. I know that some girls look good with them but generally, boys look better with furwigs because it gives them that messy look characterized with the boys. Furwigs can be styled if you have the imagination to do it(and it's not hard, really), I actually think that fibre wigs are harder to style in a different way other than the standard (at least the short wigs since long fibre wigs are easier to manage).

    17. You guys are talking about faux fur wigs, right?
Despite faux fur being so inexpensive and the wigs being so simple to make, I've seen some surprisingly nice ones. The acrylic fiber is soft but with a lot of body so it's easy to finger-style. You can't do anything like that with other synthetics such as nylon or saran.

    18. I'm actually very impressed by your image, I kind of thought of fur wigs as... pretty much the same style, and wasn't much a fan, but I must only be noticing lower-quality wigs. Perhaps I'm not even recognizing what it is once it hits a certain quality level. Interesting discovery...

    19. Here is a better view of Whisper's wig:

Everyone has such great opinions! What I have gathered with my experience of fur wigs is that a) you MUST brush it in order for it to look good. It often messes up, so keep a toothbrush handy. And b) it has to be very good quality fur! The fur MD uses is very thin and soft, so it doesn't look clumped and messy like a lot of fur wigs tend to do.

    20. I really don't like the look for fur wigs. I've never owned one personally so I don't know if they're easier to maintain or not though I would suspect they are.
I have however seen a select few designs from a specific artist who's done beautiful work creating gorgeous fantasy dreadlocks from fur wigs. If I ever consider buying fur wigs in the future, they will definitely be from her.
