Your thoughts on fur wigs?

Oct 1, 2013

    1. It depends much on doll's style and on quality of such wig. If it's quality is not bad at leats and the doll has appropriate style so the wig won't look absurdly then why not?

    2. He loves faux fur wig.

    3. I love them on boy or girl dolls but it does depend on styling. I've seen many I thought looked incredible and others looked like they never touched it just plopped it on their dolls head. A little styling can make a fur wig fabulous.

    4. Real fur (angora, tibetan mohair, etc.) - I think they look REALLY nice for a certain type of hair. If your doll is supposed to have wild hair like Pixar's Merida, then fur is where you want to go. Personally, as a connoisseur of wild curly hair, I have a love affair with fur wigs. They are definitely my favourite of the bunch, especially because the fur actually looks like in-scale hair on the doll. (Of course, it should figure that my one remaining doll is meant to have straight, black, East Asian hair...)

Synthetic Fur* - these can look really nice for short hair, BUT, it depends on the type of synthetic fur. What you need is something that isn't super plasticy, so that it's actually something you can style. That really, REALLY cheap craft fur has really springy, plastic-y fibres and it just looks like the doll is always electrocuted. Ditto on synthetic fur that's too thick. Human hair grow a certain distance apart. If the fur is too thick, it stops looking like human hair and starts to look like a big fur hat (it's also usually harder to style as well).

I've owned a really nice synthetic fur that looked like bleached surfer boy hair, and for the character, it was just right. And I also owned a wig that was.... made out of nice fur, but it made my doll look like tribble-head. WAY too furry. D:

      * I'm not including things like the long, woven-into-headcap synthetic mohair in here, by the way. That's an entirely different beast.

    5. I like how fur wigs look on tiny dolls as well on some fantasy dolls. But personally I prefer mohair wigs on tinies, and fiber wigs for bigger dolls.

    6. I think fur wigs are so much easier to style.

    7. What are the best picture examples of short male hair with fur? I googled them before but the image results are like a sea of not awesome. It's encouraging to read that peole have seen fur wig done well. Tho, I have not seen them, heh.

    8. I personally don't own any fur wigs but would love to in the future. :3
From what I've seen though I don't really like the fake fur wigs, they look a bit too poofy for my liking.
I can understand the appeal but they're not for me.
Real fur wigs like alpaca however look absolutely amazing!
They look so soft and real and from what I've heard are easier to style.

    9. They're not exactly my thing - I can barely style my own hair, let alone a mop of fur :) also the manga style doesn't quite suit the dolls I like - non-humans excluded, they can be great on elves, dragons and vampires :)

    10. It depends on the doll and the wig.

Tibetan mohair is absolutely gorgeous to me with the wonderful, natural curls, but then again, I love synthetic fibre for straight hair that doesn't require a whole lot of styling or maintenance.

For flexibility in styling with medium length hair, I can see faux fur providing a real advantage since it allows for easy spiking, straightening, curls...

I don't consider any wig to be inherently cheaper than another, but each wig provides its own benefits and drawbacks. :)

    11. I love fur wigs, and all but three of my dolls wear fur! I'm not sure why, but I just like the look better, especially on my boys. I do not care for the look of fur wigs that have not been styled though.

    12. I didn't even realize there was controversy over fur wigs, I tend to use them for my boys since they're shorter and more easily styled into boyish looks. I also know and follow a lot of really popular collectors who use fur wigs and their dolls look AMAZING.

    13. Any wig can look cheap if it's not well made, not taken care of, or the materials used to make it were sub-par. A good quality faux fur wig can be just as durable as a fibre wig, and look just as nice. Fur is also better suited to chunkier, funkier styles than fibre is, because it can be cut shorter without exposing the cap. Tibetan wool actually simulates naturally curly person-hair much better than fibre does, in my eyes.

It really depends on what style you're trying to achieve for the doll in question. Fibre and fur are both best suited to different things.

Plus, a fibre wig made out of super cheap synthetic can look just as bad as a bad fun fur wig!

    14. I love faux fur wigs... when they're styled. If you brush them (a toothbrush is perfect) they look like hair, and can look really nice. However, I've seen a lot of pictures (and some faux fur wig SALES photos!) where they've just plopped them on the doll as-is, and then they stick up all over the place, and look stringy and kind of gross. The mangy tribble look works great for some dolls, of course, but most of the time they'd look (and SELL) better if they were brushed and styled.

Lots of my boys wear them, It's easy to spike Crow's up in the back, and I don't have to worry about the watch-goggles two of them are wearing ruining an expensive fiber wig. One of my faux fur wig has a "cowlick" in it somehow, which suits the kid who's wearing it. I've never found a fiber wig that would suit half my boys anyway, they're too thick, too long, too choppy, the short ones stick up too much, they get flyaways... just not right. I find fiber wigs annoying to deal with. So faux fur it is, for many of mine.

Mohair fur is something else, and when it's a good wig without bare spots it is AMAZING. I'd love to have more of those for my girls.

    15. I like fur wigs on certain dolls, but there are some styles that I feel just can't go together with a fur wig. Lolita and fur wigs just look odd to me.

    16. I like them, I used to have a few. It really depends on the style you have in mind for your doll as well as the skill of the person who made them + the type of fur used to make them as to whether or not they look good - just being a fur wig doesn't automatically make it awful. There's some dolls with big ears and stuff that look fantastic in these especially, since they can be easily cut to fit them.

    17. Very nice pictures Hirro...i prefer human hair but at the end of the day for me as long a I can dye it, and brush it, back comb it a little I'm happy...

    18. It depends what type of fur wig it is, real vs. synthetic. Both can look very brilliant on a certain doll, while on other's it might look odd. I like seeing boys in fur wigs, because they do seem boyish (and easier to style), but those are usually shorter. Longer fur wigs seem like a hassle to me and I don't think I'd own them...

    19. I love mohair wigs, a lot of my dolls wear them, they're soft, fluffy, so much fun to style and they look like real hair :D ...or well, they look like mý hair, haha xD I like my dolls to have big hair, lots of hair, so when they wear fiber wigs(which they also do)they tend to be curly, fluffy and big! Synthetic fur wigs, I like them on other people's dolls, but for my own dolls, not so much. I used to have a fur wig for my Chiwoo, but the short hair made his big head look like an egg, haha! But I do like the look of them, especially on boys who are supposed to have short hair. I don't see why there would be a difference between a fur, mohair or fiber wig though-choose what seems best for your doll :)

    20. I like fur wigs but I don't use them much because I hate how they make a doll's head look big and fluffy. I tend towards realistic sculpts and I felt it undermines that if their wig makes their head look like a puff of cotton candy on a stick. It really depends on the fur used though.
