Your thoughts on fur wigs?

Oct 1, 2013

    1. When I first started out in this hobby, I absolutely hated fur wigs. I found them really difficult to style and they just didn't look natural. But I did pick up some tricks over the years, and now have two dolls who have fur wigs on permanently. (I think I prefer them over fiber wigs now...) There are styles you can create with a fur wig that cannot be replicated by fiber wigs.

    2. I like different wigs for different things. I have fiber wigs that are "regular" and ones meant to look like mohair, I have mohair, and I have faux fur. I really think anything has potential, depending on what you want to achieve. For a long time the faux fur wigs were one of few option for boys if one wanted short hair, and if one learns a few styling tricks, they could look great. I have some on hand just in case I might need them for a certain look or something, though I don't use them all the time.

    3. The first wig I bought for my doll was a fur wig. It suits her the best out of all the wigs I have for her. But I don't like the way it looks on photos so I am looking into making her a wig out of Alpaca fibers or maybe even fox fur.

    4. I love fur wigs on male sculpts, but for some reason I am generally not a fan of them on female sculpts. That being said, I have only had some lower quality fur wigs. I think if I was able to get my hands on a higher quality fur wig, I'd be completely different towards them.

    5. I prefer fur or brushed yarn personally. I feel like they style a lot easier and look more natural than non-fur wigs.

    6. I love both. I think it just depends on what you're trying to achieve.

But, I did hate fur wigs at first. I thought it would be like troll hair. Now I know better. Fur doesn't have to look like that and it can be really soft and silky.

    7. As many others, I did not like fur wigs at first, but then I got one for a doll and the less expensive price is definitely a plus! Also they're great to style - really easy :) ! Here is an example of a fur wig on one of my dolls:

Since fur wigs are not expensive, I'd just give it a try and if you really don't like it at all, the loss will be minimal ;). Some more points I would like to mention: They do make the head look a little bigger, for instance a 7-8 inch fur wig on a Doll Family A MSD head (the head has a pretty big circumference!) looks good (picture above), but the same wig on my MSD Doll Leaves Wish or on my Dollzone Freddy MSD head looks just ... weird xD really oversized. The wig pictured above is faux/synthetic fur but very soft to the touch and easy to style. I usually comb with a toothbrush or tiny plastic wig-combs. I also use a tad of water to flatten it a bit when styling. Also because of the way faux fur wigs are made it should be no issue to adjust/cut them a bit (the headcap) if you need to change the shape and of course you can also cut off/shorten the fur if you want it a little shorter or style it in a certain way.

P.s. This is actually a girl head on a temporary male body xD since I have no female body yet.

      Cheers,
      Milenn

    8. I agree with what others have said in that I think fur and other wigs are great depending on the look I am aiming for. I currently have two dolls with fur wigs but they don't suit my others. That said sometimes I really struggle finding the right wig for my dolls especially the boys.

    9. I think fur wigs have this versatility of style that synthetic wigs might not have, and if you're really good at arranging them, they can look fantastic. But if you're like me and have zero skills in that, it'd look horrible. Another thing that detracts from that is that you've to arrange it every single time if it gets messed up or if you remove it, and you might not get it to look like the previous one. So it's pretty unpredictable, but as I get better at styling it, I'd probably like it much, much more.

    10. I really like them, they're so fun to style and have a really nice, natural look !

    11. I have a few fur wigs but mostly I don't like he look of them so don't use them. They generally look like fake fur to me, not like hair at all.

    12. I love fur wigs but they are a little hard for my to manage since they get everywhere easily.
I think they look nice but I have also heard people on BJD Confessions say that they are really ugly or cheap.
I can see how some might be cheap but most are quality and just plain adorable.
In the end, it doesn't matter what people think. You do you. :)

    13. I quite like fur wigs, but then I guess it depends on the wig itself. I think they can look really cute!

    14. I never liked fur wigs either, until I finally figured out how to style one. The first I had was a cheapo, really rough and shedding. But I played with it a bit and it ended up looking really good on my doll's head. Recently, I just bought another fur wig, this time a bit better quality, and it's so soft!

I really can't wait to put it on my new doll when he comes in. :)

    15. I do NOT like them at all. I don't think they photograph well at all. I LOVE Mohair- and lambs wool but not the fake fur stuff.

    16. I would have said that I hate them and would never buy one, until I bought some incredible clown outfits by a great clothing artist - she made matching faux fur wigs and they just fit the character perfectly! So, never say never

    17. I like fur wigs for emo and scene-like styles, especially the coloured ones :D
But they really have to be brushed....there are too many pictures with chaotic fur wigs in the internet *_*
I manage fur wigs with a little, soft toothbrush :)

I got fibre hair wigs, too, but only one of them is very soft and has an awesome quality...unfortunately I don't know the brand -.-*
So there are more or less crappy wigs in every kind of material.

    18. I had to laugh reading this comment as I have seen some fur wigs that do look just like this to me too! It really does depend on the quality of fur used. A toothbrush I have found is invaluable in styling these types of wigs as unbrushed they quickly look a little matted.

My preference is for a glossy finish to a wig, but I wouldn't not buy another fur wig. Like anything quality counts.

    19. I like how they look on other people's boy dolls, but they never really suited my own boys. So I've kept away from them.

    20. I don't really care for them.
