Your view on 'Grail Dolls'

Nov 13, 2010

    1. Have you ever had one, or not?
Yes, I acquired my "Grail Doll" very recently.

If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?
      ^

Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
Slightly, but only because he is new. Whenever a new doll arrives, for a time he gets a little more love than the others. I've had Caleb for about 5 months now, so it has balanced back out.

Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?
Not at all, but I do think rarity and personal finace does come into play. A "grail" by definition is something hard to come by - a doll that is only $200 can be a grail if it took it's owner a very long time to acquire it.

Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?
Not at all. I was lucky enough to see a delf Woosoo in person after lusting for him for so long. Seeing my "grail doll" in person solidified my desire to have my own.

Omake: My "Grail Doll," Caleb, a Delf Woosoo:

    2. Have you ever had one, or not?
      Yes.

If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?
      Finally yes, yes, yes!

Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
Well, maybe just lightly spoil then other.

Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?
Actually, I found most BJD are very expensive, even second hand one too.
Anyway no, your "grail doll" is your own personal choice of love for that doll(s), whatever the price might be.

Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?
Nope, only to found that she's more lovelier and more beautiful in person that what I'd expected.

    3. I don't think I really do have a 'grail doll'. I do have one or two dolls that I love and feel I absolutely HAVE to have, but they aren't LE's, sold out, or even all that expensive, so I'm not really sure they qualify as a 'grail doll'. But then, the whole concept of grail dolls is still a little new to me. :sweat

    4. Have you ever had one, or not?
Yes, I have two. Crobidoll Ziwoo and Crobidoll DD Lance.
If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?
Close, Ziwoo is currently on layaway for four months. It hasn't even been a month yet and the wait is already killing me. :(
Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
Can't really answer this because I haven't received him yet, but I think that when I do eventually get him I will treat him the same as my other dolls. I treat my other dolls with care and try to be gentle with them and take good care of them. I think I will treat my Ziwoo the same. Maybe I will play with him less, but I think that may just be because he is bigger than my other dolls.
Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?
I don't consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls. I think in order for them to be a grail doll they must be a doll that is hard to get. Whether it is because they are limited or have been discontinued. Sometimes that makes the doll more expensive because of second-hand market mark up, but not always. In fact my Ziwoo was the same price as the standard Crobidoll R-lines, so he I wouldn't consider him extremely expensive, but he is hard to find.
Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?
      I hope I won't be disappointed.:sweat

    5. Have you ever had one, or not?
Yes, a Dd Anne Lotus Near. I missed it by a few weeks the first time it was released. And have been hunting one down ever since. I have gotten to hold one before and It just cemented my affection for this unique doll.

If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?

I have just finally secured one from the MP.

Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?

I don't suspect I will other than having to be careful of it as it is rather unique.

Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?

No but I do tend to think of grail dolls as being some what more difficult to aquire due to limited release.

Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?

I don't know yet but I doubt it.

    6. Have you ever had one, or not?
Yes, I have a pullip Paja.

If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?
She really sort of fell into my hands from an ebay auction that I won. I bid on her assuming I wouldn't win and somehow no one else knew about the auction and I won her very cheaply :)

Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
      Not really, but I do worry about her getting hurt as I would NEVER be able to replace her ;-;

Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?
No, I consider them to be difficult to find.

Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?
The opposite really, I discovered why she was so sought after once I fell in love with her.

    7. I just discovered my grail doll, the new limited volks SD16 Megu. It is unfortunately very expensive, and very limited, so she is very hard to get. A grail doll doesn't have to be expensive, but unfortunately, this one is. If I got her, I wouldn't treat her any differently and I highly doubt I would be disappointed :)

    8. Have you ever had one, or not?
Yes, I think Limhwa Limho Mono would have to count as my Grail Doll, after the period of anxiety of wondering whether he would ever be readily available on the first-hand market again. In addition he is the mold I chose for my most revered OC, so he's extra-special to me.

If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?
He is my newest arrival in fact, my Xmas '11 boy.

Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
The only way I have treated him differently so far is I haven't done his face-up myself, he came with one and it's just too lovely to remove.

Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?
Not necessarily, to me being "Grail" has to do with how difficult the doll is to acquire and how long one has spent pining for it, so price is only one of the factors. There are dolls on my wishlist that will be more expensive than Mono was, but I could easily order them right now if I had the money, so they're not as "Grail" as he was, I don't think.

Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?
I'm in no way disappointed with my Mono, in fact I didn't think I would like his body as much as I do, and even those long girly fingernails have won my heart now that I own him.

    9. Have you ever had one, or not?[b/]
      Yes.
If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?[B/]
I just bought two of my grail dolls within the last four months.
Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?[B/]
I view it differently than my other dolls, but I am careful with all my dolls. I love them all in their own way.
Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?[B/]
I think they are the BIG goal doll that is hard to come by. This usually means that it is out of reach in someway, so it could be: discontinued, limited or really expensive (to the individual).
Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?[B/]
Nope. Still waiting for one to ship, but I could never be disappointed.

    10. Have you ever had one, or not?
Oh gosh yes! Dollzone Anson, and Withdoll Priscilla, and I would love a Peakswoods Goldie, or a Unoa Lusis.

If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?
I have my Priscilla, and I am waiting on my Anson. I don't know if I'll ever get Goldie or Lusis, as my taste has slowly been changing...

Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
No, Priscilla is not as fragile as Anson will be though. I will probably not handle her as I have my others.

Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?
Of course not! Any doll can be someones 'Grail doll'! And expensive depends on the person. Many people thing 40 dollars on a doll is expensive, let alone hundreds, even thousands!

Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?
In a way I am upset with Priscilla, but only because she has no outfit. She has to wear a shirt all of the time. I just want to show off those awesome legs! <3

    11. Considering the term "Grail Doll" mentioned by Ostrich..
A "grail doll" is The One Doll. The one you fantasize about for days (or even years). The one that's sold out or LE, and thus you think you'll never get your hands on it. Based on the responses most of these dolls are expensive, though they certainly don't have to be.

Have you ever had one, or not?
Considering Ostrich's definition, three of them are grail dolls (Pipos LE Dorothy of course, and LUTS event head 2009 and 2010, since they will not be produced anymore) and I'm planning to add the fourth one soon (Volks SDGRG Winter Smile Nono)If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?
      The last one, hopefully soon

Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
      No, I love them equally

Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?
I consider "grail doll" is our own personal choice of love for that doll(s), whatever the price might be, expensive or inexpensive. But the point is you like it very much, and it is sold out or LE, which makes it difficult to get them if not through Ebay, auction or MP, so yes it is.

Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?
No. I only buy the one I like, and so far I never feel that way with my dolls :)

    12. Have you ever had one, or not?
I consider a number of dolls on my wishlist to be grail dolls regardless of availability or cost. So, yes, I have.

If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?
I've managed to add two to my collection so far: Sleeping Elf Bonbon and a DZ Dragon. Again, not particularly expensive or hard to find, but dolls that I've wanted very badly since almost when I first got into the hobby.

Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
At the moment I only have Miss Bonbon here with me, and yes, I do. I tend to handle her more, take more pictures of her, and put her in her box when I'm done.

Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?
      No, I don't, obviously.

Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?
      So far, no.

    13. Have you ever had one, or not?
Yes, I do have something of a 'grail doll'. More like doll-that-has-yet-to-exist-quite-yet. I often look at dolls that are -almost- what I want, so close, but they don't have x, y, and z factors that would make them -perfect-, and I tell myself to wait patiently and hope against hope that the company will one day come out with those features.

Right now, my 'grail doll' is a Feeple65 woman with tan skin, a small bust, and a dreamy half-lidded face (the last part probably totally doable by modding a sleeping faceplate, but then again, tan-doll). I'm very picky with doll bodies, and with such a big, expensive doll, I want the body to be as beautiful as possible, with nice-looking joints. That's Feeple65!

If you have, have you managed to add it to your collection?
Not yet, since obviously that doll has yet to even quite exist yet XD . If I did see it, I'd be in quite the panic though at this stage. My wallet's not prepared! For this kind of doll, I'm willing to be quite patient. I'm ready to wait years if it comes to that.

Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
If I had her, I would. For the other doll concepts I have, versatility is key; I want to be able to dress them in all kinds of stuff, change their wigs, their clothes, their shoes, etc.. That's what I find fun about them! And I like playing with my dolls and carrying and moving them around a lot too. But this baby? With her size, her expense (no doubt she'd be at least over $800 blank), and her 'goddess' character concept? I only have one look in mind for her, and it's very elaborate and probably also expensive to pull off (so... much... jewelry... OTZ ). And I'd probably have a little altar set up in the home somewhere where she can royally stand or slouch around as a piece of glorified decoration.

I see this doll, my 'grail doll', more as a decoration or a piece of art than I do a toy or companion like I do the rest of my dolls (though those dolls are clearly art as well) .

Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as grail dolls?
For me, yes. In fact, I find it a bit strange that so many people seem to have a number of grail dolls in the first place. It seemed more like a grail doll, was just that; a singular. But, I guess for every person a 'grail doll' means something else.

      <3 ali

    14. I have one... He is Dollzone Alpha, and I hope to be able to buy him sometime, but will probably end up getting less expensive dolls instead of saving up for him, because I have an impulse-control problem.

    15. Have you ever had one, or not?
Yes, the doll that actually got me into the hobby; a Dream of Doll Ducan
If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?
      Yes, after about 4ish years of wanting him and 2 collecting XD;
Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
As of this post, I've only had him for a few days and I don't think I'm treating him any different.... Maybe staring at him more lol
Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?
No, to me a grail doll is one that you love just by looking at it and no matter what will always love it.
Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?
The only disappointment I had was the wig and having to spend so long styling it, but otherwise, no disappointments :)

    16. Have you ever had one, or not?

      Yes. I've had several.

If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?

I got one down and five to go! ;3

Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?

Whenever I get a new doll, I get all excited and spend more time with it. I do go the extra mile of doing extra things but I love all my dolls the same. Grail or not...

Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?

Hmmm, I consider the 'sold out' limited edition dolls to be Grail. Because if someone owns one, they don't want to sell and when they do, they expect you to sometimes pay 3x more the orginal price of the doll.

Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?

      HELL NO!
I love her to death. Glad I made the choice to buy her. :3

    17. Have you ever had one, or not?
Yesssss... Soom Beryl! Also Afi and Ai, to a lesser degree- I really wanted them like nothing else, but didn't want tinies at the time.

If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?
I have my little Winnie Dee Ai on her way home to me now, my Winnie Dee Afi on layaway, and FINALLY!!! A Beryl on layaway!

Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
I think I will stare at them and shower them with more attention than the others, but I won't neglect my others, either.

Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?
No way! I consider the dolls that are almost unobtainable, or are the ones that people want the most, as grail dolls. The doll that has you coming back to them after 2 years and going 'I WILL have you one day'.

Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?
      My girls and boy aren't home yet, but I already know that my Winnie Dee Ai's right leg is yellowed and not her left, and I don't even care... I just want her to be home ;-;

    18. Since i dont have mine yet i will try to answer these from a prospective POV.

Have you ever had one, or not?
Not currently but in the function of buying one soon... Dollshe Bernard :fangirl:
If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?
He will be sitting up there with the rest i guess...
Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
I probably will, like my Doll Chateau who (is also a kind of "grail doll" as well) I tend to be gentle and ginger with
Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?
Nah, I think its more what the person wants, Dollshe isnt an expensive company as with some companies that completely topple in prices..
Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?
I certainly hope i wont be... but i have been looking at a lot of them online with and without faceups, and the body that's specific to the one i am prospecting to buy. So i think I have a good idea of what he will be...

    19. Have you ever had one, or not?
Yes, I'd consider 'grail dolls' my Supia Rosy, Granado Boyd and IH JID Ryan. Basically because after I got them I couldn't find other dolls of the same type more desirable. I'm still somehow haunted by Iplehouse, especially JID Asa, but I'm not fully decided whether I want a couple of SDs or not... they're perfect, but they're so bulky...

If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?
      See abovem

Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
To some degree, yes. I guess I'm subconsciously extra careful with the handling... and they get to wear the best outfits :)

Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?
Not really. My thing with Iplehouse is not price-related but more of an aesthetic obsession kept under control by the realization that it would be just too much resin for me to handle.

Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?
I was a bit disappointed about my Rosy's body in terms of seams and hand mobility but otherwise satisfied

    20. Have you ever had one, or not?
Yes. Dollfie Dream Saber. Any one of them, I'm not picky. :)

If you have, have you finally managed to have it in your collection?
Not yet, but maybe one day. :) I will remain hopeful.

Do you treat it differently to your other dolls?
I think I would. I'm a little OCD, so I might treat her as something more special than my other dolls because of all the work it will take to get her.

Do you only consider the very expensive dolls as Grail dolls?
No. It usually ends up that way because the very expensive dolls that one wants are usually the ones that are more difficult to attain.

Have you managed to buy your Grail doll, but then been disappointed in some way with it?
I will let you know when I manage to get her. :)
