Putty is a type of substance used to secure eyes to the inside of a doll's head. Putty is ideally temporary, and shouldn't be confused with other methods such as hot gluing. Putty can be purchased with a doll from most doll suppliers, or there are a number of alternative options available for eye putty:

Recommended:

  • Volks reformulated putty
  • Kneadable Erasers. Some people say they do not stick enough to resin.
  • Silicone Ear Plugs. Not for use with silicone eyes! Some people think they are too squishy.

Other Options (see CAUTION below):

  • Stickytac, BluTac, FunTac, UHU Tac or similar.
  • Sillyputty Goes hard quickly, so only suitable for a permanent change/insertion of eyes)
  • Modeling clay in light colours i.e. grey.
  • Sculpey For glass eyes only. Some people report crumbling after extended use

CAUTION:

Damage to Resin: Please note that some substances contain plasticizers or dyes that stain or damage resin or the eyes. They may also contain sulphur, which can damage resin. Please take care when using a substance other than a putty specifically designed for doll eyes. Always test the putty on a small surface on your doll if you are uncertain if it is suitable.

Sculpey is known to cause urethane and silicone eyes to crack and degrade over time, in addition to damaging resin, face ups and flaking away Mr. Super Clear (MSC).

Damage to Eyes: Some putty will react with different types of eyes. For example, the LUTS website notes that Plastilina may react with acrylic eyes. Please also take this into account when choosing which putty to use.

Do not use silicone based putty with silicone eyes. It will bond with the silicone of the eyes and can dull or cloud them.

As a general rule, oil, sulphur or plastic chemical based putty will react to acrylic and eat away at it.

Doll companies that carry puttySome may or may not be sold out
