Quiet, skeptical and imminently reasonable, Kaia has the mixed fortune of being the only child of adventurer, mystic and founding member of the infamously odd Order Obscurus, Sir Morton "That Fellow Who Wrecked the Arctic Intrepid While Hunting for Sea Monsters" Ashford.

She never knew her mother, but takes some comfort in relatives' proclamations that she obviously takes after that most patient and worthy lady more strongly than she does her almost scandalously eccentric father.

She's too realistic to ever hope for a "normal life" at this point... Finding that in a household like her father's would be much more surprising than finding yet another mummified mermaid stashed in the parlor cupboard... But would one week without a looming metaphysical disaster or having an angry, arcane horror locked in attic be too much to ask?
