100% Permanent Face-Ups and Body Blushing?

Oct 2, 2009

    1. Hey hun, so you used primer, acrylic paint.... what kind of gloss did you use before putting on the sealer they recommended? And is that sealer like MSC or more like.... varnish or something?
      Thanks!

Not completely clear on whether someone did find a method that works or not yet :( But I know there are people interested.

    2. For me the whole appeal of a BJD is that they are customizable and can become a completely different doll if your interests change. That's why I love them. To make them permanent would be like going back to owning Tonner dolls, you are stuck with the one look. Except of course you paid a hell of a lot more for your BJD!

      No, not for me! :)

    3. Blushing, I can see being permanent...

But... I mean, BJDs are meant to be fully customizable, and putting on a permanent faceup or even blushing to me, just kind of ruins some of that customizing value D:
I loooove changing my boys' looks, even right down to the body blushing- so having the option of changing the shape of their eyebrows or the length of their lashes, or what their lip color is best, etc.

Taking even just one aspect of that customizing away... I might as well start collecting those new jointed LIV Dolls :C

So, yeah, absolutely nothing permanent for me on my boys xD

    4. I changed my mind to much to make anything permanent.

One day I want my doll to be subtle, the next, I want her to be bold. Like day and night make-up for people, I believe in always being able to adapt a look within the doll's personality. Besides that, I love changing looks, so my doll would need to be able to do that without a crazy amount of effort.

    5. This is a sealer that comes in both a paint-on and a spray-on version. The paint-on is easiest to find. It's NOT as matte as MSC, so you WILL get a slightly shiny coating on the doll. Basically you proceed as normal then use the minwax as the final coat.

    6. Nice! Thank you so much. I will try sometime on a practice piece to see how it turns out "in person". :) Thanks

    7. As far as body blushing goes, I would love this. I body blushed my SD and she has scratches all over, despite how many layers of sealant I used. I keep having to re-paint on her nippers because they keep scrapping off and its starting to look more and more like I should just wipe it and do it again.

When it comes to face ups... I think I would like it, so long as I found the perfect artist to do the face up. I struggle with them, myself, so I wouldn't want to do it myself. However the face up I got on my AoD boy when he first came was so beautiful that when it first scratched, I started to cry. I would have loved to be able to keep it forever.

    8. I wouldn't consider doing this, for even if there's a faceup that's so close to perfection that I'd like it to keep forever, there may be a day when you might - just might - not want that doll's head with you any longer. It'll be easier for the new owner to create a new character for that doll, unless he/she has explicitly expressed that they'll like to keep that face-up. In a way, the temporal nature of faceups is also kinda appealing, since that's another reason why we value them so much.

Even if it's an anthro, I'd rather it remains customisable on the surface. I have a fox that I'd done a full body blushing in grey pastels for. Even though it comes off easily, I'm just glad that there's another chance for me to re-do it.

    9. I wouldn't want any permanent on my doll. And I say that only because I'm compulsive and would jump in a jiffy to change him up. Not to mention if you permanently fixate your doll to look like this, that takes all of the fun out of owning a BJD; one of the perks is getting to customize the doll, including the face makeup, body structure etc. I know this is pricey but you just spent 500 dollars on a doll. >______>;
Maybe its a good idea for people who go to a lot of cons and let others handle their dolls (I for one wouldn't let Jesus touch my doll...you never know who just ate something sticky or gooey that could potentially ruin/stain my baby) but for others who don't go to too many cons I don't think it would be very fly.

    10. Would you do this? Why or why not?
Yes, for body blushing, at least around the joints. And for manicures and pedicures, too. I'm always super busy with work and school, so not having to worry about touching up blushing would be great.

Would you buy a doll with this treatment? Would you opinion change if it was an anthro painted to be the species it was sculpted as?
I wouldn't buy one secondhand if I couldn't get a look at it in RL first. Settings on your monitor aren't always representative of RL coloring. I wouldn't want a doll to come to me with what looks like a permanent sunburn!

    11. Body blushing, sure, why not? I love the look of it, but I'm not going to have my girl's body blushed since it wears faster than a face up. a 100% permanent face up though, not really. I like how you can change their faces too much, and I'd never want to take away that option.

I also would never buy a doll with a face up like that. Like I said, body blushing yes, but full paint or face ups, no.

    12. Permanent body blushing sounds cool to me. I would love to have a doll with a nicely blushed body and be able to make it permanent. But not face-up. Really, there is only one face-up id ever want to be permanent if I had it and that's the Blue Knight face-up for Abadon. Over time, tastes change and some people may find that with that change, they'd like to change the face of a doll. Body blushing...there doesn't seem to be too many ways to change it around.

    13. I keep my dolls in a doll case so I have never had that problem. I don't see anything wrong with it.

    14. I'd love it all to be perminant yes! Most of my dolls have custom face ups that I wouldn't never intend on changing. They have the exact faces I want them to have with no intention of ever changing them. My oldest doll is about 4 years I think and I've never wanted her to change, I love her face the way it is.

    15. Heh! Funny this topic should come back up just as I was sending these pics to a friend.

This is my SHARPIE FACEUP. Yes, Sharpie. Or, well Prismacolor or some similar type of permanent ink from a pen. And yes, it's quite permanent so far. Note the orange lips? Well those don't seem to want to come off. I will find a way, however. I have more experimenting to do, and she's a work in progress anyway....

      but I was bored and thought it'd be a fun experiment! ^^;;

(please excuse the ridiculous eyes and frightwig, they're the only things she has on hand, atm)

    16. That's great! I wish all my dolls were drawn with sharpies lol

    17. Raven what an amazing Banji ! I think she looks like an antique wax doll with that color tone accenting her like that.

    18. Would you do this? Why or why not?
I actually had no idea it was possible to have permanent face ups or body blushing! I always heard that it would chip or fade... and that people often redo face ups... But if I had to pick and choose, yes I would actually do this for a couple of my dolls! Especially if I absolutely loved the face up on them and wouldn't change a thing.

Would you buy a doll with this treatment?
I most definitely would! I tend to really love the face up jobs that I see on the dolls I'm interested in purchasing, and if it could be permanent, then so help me, I would buy every one of them with permanent face ups!

    19. Don't know if I replied, but for me, I like the idea. I'm getting my first doll with a basic face-up, and this is because I would rather not screw up my first doll, and I'd want to play with her out of the box and not have to give her her face first. Not all "faceless" dolls are attractive, I think. And I seriously doubt I'd ever change it.

And that probably goes double for blushing the body. It just makes life so much easier. I don't know why you wouldn't permanently blush a body (of course, after you liked your work), because to me, it would feel like a pain to know that her blushing is rubbing off and that I need to do it again at some point.

    20. It would be ok for me to use permanent face-up and body blush on Tyra cause I would never change the character she is.
