100% Permanent Face-Ups and Body Blushing?

Oct 2, 2009

    1. I've never thought of this before, but I would really like some dolls' faces to be permanent. I sometimes see a beautiful doll and imagine that, if I were the owner, I would be crushed if the faceup ever got damaged or had to be replaced due to time, etc. If I were to get a beautiful artist faceup, and if it turned out perfect, I would want to keep it forever and never let it change! It would have to be perfect for my doll's character, and completely indistinguishable from a faceup done using non-permanent methods. I would need for it to be a perfect world, I think, in order for such a thing to happen, so that I wouldn't have to think about long-term effects like difference in yellowing, etc.... :3
I think it depends on what objective I have in mind before buying the doll. If I want it for the mold's beauty and its resemblance to a character I have in mind, then yes, I'd love it to be permanent! But if I wanted it for having a 'doll' more than the doll's character, and if I thought I'd ever change my mind about said doll, I would say no, I would not want it to be permanent.
I don't like body blushing really, so I don't really count that as a factor in my answer (I don't even really have experience with body blushed dolls ><).
I think that it would only hurt resell value when the person doesn't like the faceup! But if the faceup appeals, and is good for the other person's character, then I think some doll owners would want the 'permanent' effect for the same reasons I just listed here. ^^ Everyone's so different in this hobby, I really do feel like it would appeal to some people and not others (although that's with everything of course xD).
      For some people, I think that there might be issues with 'character remnants' though... for instance, if I bought such a permanent-faced doll, I would feel that the other person who had the face done is passing a character to me rather than a doll that I can 'make my own' fully. I think that's the customization part that a lot of people in the hobby feel is essential to 'owning' a doll. Even if it was the smallest little addition of an eyelash or change in tone of the doll, and even if the overall effect of the faceup was the same, I would rather have it be only slightly different and 'mine' than completely the same from one person to another. I think even if the faceup was still 'perfect' for my character, I would rather have it be a tad 'mine' than completely 'other', if that makes any sense. ><;

    2. permanent faceups are pretty cool.

    3. I just recently thought about this.
I probably would not give my boys a permanent face up or body blushing, simply because I like to be able to change their expressions and general style through this from time to time.
However I'm planning to give Zowie (my Miho) a few of his tattoos soon and the idea of having permanent tattoos on him is quite appealing. It's not like I can take a Magic Eraser and remove my own tattoos, obviously. That's kind of the point of having any, imho. Why not do something similar with dolly ink then?

Since I'm not planning to resell him anytime soon, I don't particularly care about any possible influence on his worth, positive or negative, but in general, especially with my other dolls, I'd consider this an important aspect.

But I'll see what I'll do with the boys, nothing's set in stone yet.

    4. I have several dolls with make up by famous artists, who don't take commissions and it'll be impossible to fix their make up if something happens. So, I wish they'd have permanent make up.

    5. can this be done? like with maybe clear varnish or something? how is it done?
thats what i want to know O.o sounds interesting.
but i do know one draw back to using something like varnish or polyurethane(hope i spelled that right) is that it would give whatever you made permanent a shine to it on top of whatever face up you did or whatever you wanted like that permanent.

    6. Someone might have said it already, but I bet you could do it with inks. I heard some inks bleed on resin, but from using them on paper I know different inks act different ways, so you'd have to experiment to find ones that didn't bleed or change over time. I bet you could do it~ (I might actually experiment with this when I have some spare resin around, which I'm likely to soon. I'd love to find a permanent body blushing method. And it wouldn't matter too much in the case of blushing if the ink bled a little, as long as the texture didn't turn weird or something.)

    7. I experimented with the Minwax sealer on some spare grey feet, and is was epic fail. The feet had been blushed and sealed with MSC UV Cut, and when I used the Minwax it did really strange things to the surface. I'll post some pics of them later.

Also, before I do any work on the bodies or faces I give a light coat of MSC---gives a bit of tooth to the resin.

When I do the aesthetic work on my dolls I do it in stages with sprays of MSC in between each stage. I tried to use the Minwax, and then spray with MSC to cut the shine down (used satin finish Minwax).

I also took a pair of cream white feet from my Yur that had no coating on them, and gave them a spray with the Minwax. I'm going to try blushing over them, and then spraying with Minwax to see what happens.

I have a couple dolls that I'm really proud of how they turned out, and I want to make their body work especially more durable.

One of my favorite gals I just had to completely redo her face--got a scratch on the cheek that could not be fixed. I was really upset about it.

Has anyone actually had any luck with Minwax?

    8. I would definitely do the permanent body blushing, mainly because it would be a hassle to have to repaint it constantly (since people handle him so much).

    9. Me me me me please :) I am very interested in this for body blushing purposes mainly, as I am planning on handling my doll quite a bit and don't want to be spraying and blushing every other day :)

I am not sure about how I would go about dunking the whole body.... I guess in individual pieces... I don't know. But anyway, yes please, if you -or anyone else- has pics, please! And thank you :)

    10. ok, here is my problem i am almost out of msc i am in costa rica and they have regulations on importing sprays,
so i am saving what lil msc i have for tiny faceups.
my daughter has a pair of hooves, i primed then sanded with tamiaya flat base coat, to get a grit to paint with then did a watercolor coat to tint it after drying i used 2 coats of volks acrylics then glossed and volks pearl powder with tamyia x-22 gloss
they are beautiful, but i am so afraid when she restrings her doll the knee and ankle are gonna chip or rub off and ruin the paint, i want something i can paint over the gloss coat to finish them and make it permanent at the very least the knees and ankle areas that will rub brush on is fine can i use minwax on them to acheive this permanent perfection and if so what minwax product do i buy i really wanted to go to the store tomorrow. please help

    11. I think for body blushing, that'd be pretty darn cool.

I also like the sound of perminant faceups, but I think I just change my dolls too much too often to be able to do that. I'd want and need a pretty solid idea before doing something like that.

    12. I think everything's already been said on this thread that I might think to add, but I certainly enjoyed reading it! The extra tips and tricks I picked up along the way gave me ideas. I like the dipping joints in dye for a permanent blush idea, though I'd probably be too scared to try it on a doll I loved-- and I don't have a tester doll in resin yet. Mostly, though, I'm in the same camp as those who wish they had the option of making a few utterly perfect personal character dolls' paint jobs permanent, but wouldn't want to buy one with permanent faceup unless it was utterly amazing. I like the customizability and inherent possibility in these dolls too much, like everyone else.

    13. sadly apparently just like MSC, ZM, AND TESTORS, MINWAX is not sold here either. and I could find no polycrylic sealers here either only polyurathene and thats acetone based etc blagh.

i did however find out Deco Art brand is here and sells clear matte and gloss acrylic spray paint. hummm

    14. Resurrecting an older but still useful thread (was linked-to in another thread recently)! (Oops, not that old - I missed the last page of posts!)

I don't know if it would be an option, and it's only in brush-on form, but when I was into making beads and figurines out of polymer (bake-cured) clay, we brushed on Future Floor Wax to seal the surfaces. It's a liquid pure acrylic coating. We would put some in a little bottle that came with a brush, and it produces an almost matte finish, more of a "satin" finish with more coats. It worked very well considering the amount of rubbing and shifting big polymer beads being used as jewelry go through.

I know it wouldn't be good for faceups (not a spray form), but might be an alternative (and considerably cheaper) for people doing extensive acrylic-painted tattoos. Perhaps even brushed on over the MSC for durability?

    15. The art store i went to here suggested a brush on sealer used for goldleaf it has a pic of the mona lisa on the bottle she said it was used on resin too but also comes in a bottle with a brush.

i have however now primed, painted, glossed (brush methods) then done 2 coats of acrylic gloss spray coats. problem with the gloss though.... the hooves look fantastic but when i put the top of the leg ontop of the foot it wants to stick so once strung i fear them not moving or sticking together or the top of the knee grinding off should i spray with a matte instead or should i try just applying some form of lubricant like vasiline in a thin coat on top of the foot/inside the calf and around the knee, i just really don't wanna ruin the paint job i am due anytime and i don't think i have time to start them over as i am 37weeks along and i want my daughter to have her hybrid back together this weekend. /sigh

    16. For dolls I knew 100% was staying with me and would never be changed yes! Esp the bodies as that is expensive part of work and the fact clothes can rub off the blushing and tattoos esp. I would love my Shigure to get that and his GF Serenity. But the LTF kids just the face plates I would really have to know artist understands what I want.

    17. (HI BLITZAVA! It's Padfoot! ^^)

      Anyway XD

I dunno. I'd be kinda scared about it to be honest, though it would be like everything else in the world: cons vs. pros. Advantages vs. Disadvantages. A big disadvantage would be if someone unfortunately HAD to give their doll away for financial issues and the new owner wouldn't really have the ability to make the doll original.

    18. Well apparently it is becomming clear due to this being the rainy season it is just taking an insanely long time to dry.
I can now set the calf on top of the foot and it no longer has a tackyness too it so i told my daughter wait til wed. and restring your doll all appears well it's just the humidity and we moved here from florida but we had air conditioning and here we just have fans and screen doors and windows, so there is no drying them out faster inside the house so when humidity is high it's just high and appears to just require 2 weeks drying time to cure and their fine lol.

    19. I would like a more lasting faceup. Might even consider permanent. But what I do want permanent is the body blushing, and any tattoos :P
Still hoping for something that will work, so if anyone is still experimenting, please post results.

      Thanks!

    20. Wait, it's possible to do a permanent faceup?? Teach me!! * please?
