5StarDoll Minis discussion part 1

Aug 8, 2009

    1. I'll take pictures of my 5Star MSD girl body. I have the one with the hip and bust joint, type B? I'll edit this post with a link to my flickr soon.

      -------

EDIT: Well that was awkward. Right when I'm taking pictures of a naked female doll, a boy comes rushing into my dorm room and I'm like OH MY- and he says "is that a naked doll?" Awkward.

Anyways, here are my MSD Elva posability pictures. She really is a beautiful and brilliant little poser, but I'm not too creative with poses. She can also stand on one leg, but I was walked in on before I got that picture. BTW: she has been poorly sueded with hot glue (it's been a while) and I sanded her um... pointy bits. Badly.

    2. Those pics are great! Looks like she has a wonderful range of posing :D

I hope someone with the C type body will share some similar pics with us too. I'm still unsure why they did away with the thigh swivel joint.

    3. I'd personally love to see the C body too. I don't know what I'd do without the thigh swivel. It's so helpful. I really don't like the trend where companies are getting rid of the hip joint and are only doing the bust joint. It really makes a difference in posing!

    4. knightjeran, thank you; those are wonderful! So thorough. :)

    5. Wow, this thread is so silent. I'm going to post a little drive by spam. I just faceupped a Ji, Yoka and an Emma. My favorite is Emma so far so here's a pic of her. I'll post a group shot at some point. If you guys want to see the other two let me know. Ah sorry for the dust on her face.

    6. I ordered a Wicked Stitchery grab bag in slim msd size for my Ji last Friday and I just recieved notice that it should ship today. I'm guessing it should get here this Friday. I'm really excited because the two yosd grab bags I ordered for her twins were great. I will try to get up pictures of her in her new clothes by this time next week. I will also try and get up some pictures of her with her kids once her daughter arrives and I make them their armchair.

    7. Thank you Knight Jeran for the wonderful pics. My Emma can't do all of those poses! But she is a new 'C' body and doesn't have the hip or thigh joints. Neither does her sister Gigi (Ji). Tacy(Tong,Tong) has the same joints as your doll and could probably do all of the poses but being a little girl wouldn't look the same! I wish I could post pictures, but I am so new I am not allowed to yet. Have to be later. But I did enjoy all of your poses.

Hi Snow072291, I would love to see the things you have gotten for your girl. I find the 5 Stars a bit bigger than other minis and the clothes don't fit as well, especially the top. It's good to know that the yosd outfits fit them, too. Thank you so much for the information.

    8. Her clothes should get here either tomorrow or saturday and I will be sure to report back. It seems like all of my dolls so far are hard to find clothes for. The twins that I mentioned before are fantasy doll tinies and a bit skinier than most yos, Cora is really curvy (not complaining, I Love her body), and her husband will be a souldoll Hunoi on the new, longer body. At 47 cms that boy is going to be hard to find clothes for and souldoll's clothes just cost too much for me right now.

    9. Hi Snow072291

Does it seem strange to you to make dolls so differently sized and not make clothes for them, too? I know I can get clothes for the 5 Star tinies through DDE, but though they have a few clothes for the MSD and SD sizes you can't get them unless you order directly from 5 Star. And I think you may have to buy a doll at the same time. I guess I need to keep looking around for things for them.

Wow, you make furniture, too! Seems a hard thing to make to me. But if you can it saves on having to buy things for around $200. Girls can use things to sit on. I did get a couple chairs at Michaels and they are the right size for Emma and Gigi (Ji) and Tacy, though she is a bit small and looks like a little girl in a big adult chair. I suppose that is what she is, too.

    10. I'd love to see the Ji, Invie!

    11. It does seem odd too me. Maybe we could try asking Moc to order some for us when they put in their next preorder. It looks like the clothes will get here tomorrow, stupid campus mail.

I'm still tryind to figure out how to make the furniture. It would be easier if I could get some wood or flam but I don't have a car so I might try to make the bed first. I think I will try to use the very thin wood we have on campus for the art majors, wire, and some dowel rods. Hopefully it works.

    12. Here you go! This is not a great pic of her tho and I had darkened her eyebrows after this. I'm going to try to get better photos of her this weekend if I have time :)

    13. Igotthe clothes today from Wicked Stitchery. Everything fit except for the jeans. I will try to get pictures up soon.

    14. Lovely Ji Invie! Love the colors and the light touch you used. Great sweater, too. Did you have any trouble getting the color to stick to the doll? I used pastels and it seemed like the mouth just didn't want any color there at all. But she came out nicely in the end. More basic than yours I think, but I am new to this and haven't done much yet. Much more experienced with cloth doll faces.

Hi snow072291, Gee I wonder why the jeans didn't fit if everything else did. Of course it could be lots of things like the waist or hips being too large. Or the doll's rear end. But I'm looking forward to seeing everything that fit. Waiting is such a pain, but I'm sure the pics will be worth it. As for MOC and the clothes I wonder if they would if we gave them pics at the same time or something. I have a friend from one of the boards and she gets clothes from them, but she bought a doll there. Unfortunately she isn't getting anything new at present. But I'll ask again about doing an order and see if ours is large enough if she will order things for us. Let you know soon. Hmm, don't know where to get wood on campus. Not that I have been in University for quite a while. Santa Cruz had a great system for the bus. Came every half hour and you just needed to show your student body card for the fare. However, the bed idea sounds like a go and then you would have some experience, too. I have seen something with just a straight piece and cute swirled feet. But dowel rods for feet sounds good, too. Especially if you are going to put a dust ruffle on the bed! Ooo, so exciting, can't wait to see what you come up with. Personally, I'm not good with wood. But I can sew and knit and stuff like that.

      Have a great weekend everyone.

    15. Thanks Goldie! I got the sweater from Alice's Collection. It's so pretty and the weave is so fine. I highly recommend it. The 1/4 size jeans I got also fit well so if you guys are wondering, Alice Collection clothes seem to be a good fit.

When I first started I had so much trouble with MSC chipping after I finished my work O_o. It was so terrible to spend so much time on a faceup and see it ruined. However I now have a pretty good method. First thing is to make sure your head is very clean. I use a perfume and dye free liquid dish soap and scrub with a magic eraser sponge. The magic eraser sponge will lightly sand the surface to give it some tooth for the MSC to grip. After cleaning let the head air dry and until you completely finish your faceup do not touch the head with bare skin. The oils from your skin will cause the pastel to stick weirdly to the oily parts and the MSC will also flake more easily in those oily areas. Thats it! Next time your faceup will work perfectly!

EDIT: Oh I am a little OCD so I always wear gloves if I am doing excessive handling of the head. For example if I am taking the head off or changing the eye I will put on rubber gloves. When doing faceups I will wear gloves the entire process but will probably try to find cotton gloves since I don't like the feel of rubber gloves.

    16. Sorry, my computer isn't reading my card for some reason today. As forthe pants it was a mixture of her having too plump of a bottom and those lovely athletic legs they have.

    17. Invie, thank you for the wonderful information on the face ups. I'm sorry you had face ups ruined before. I know how I hated ruining a face on one of my dolls. Of course when it is a cloth doll you have to make her a whole new head, too. I will have to get out my gloves for Emma's face up and follow your instructions, too. Emma got caught out in the rain when I sprayed her so I just finished with a Mr. Clean eraser getting off all the wihitened MSC. So now she should be all ready for the washing part. If you don't mind my asking, which pastels do you use? And did you mix that so natural color on Ji's lips? I bought a starter set but if I do more than the three 5 Star dolls, think I will need more colors! Ji came out too pink for what I wanted. Fortunately she is still very nice, though not soft like yours. Tacy is very pink, but that was deliberate as she is a little girl. Hopefully, someday soon I can post pics for everyone to see. I have only been here for a week so I'm not surprised.

Thank you so much about the clothes info, too. The sweater looks like it is a lace weight yarn. I'll have to go and have a look around so the girls can have more than one outfit each. Not that Emma needs clothes quite yet!

Hi Snow072291. Well, yes they do have very nice athletic legs, don't they. Part of what makes them attractive. We will both have to go to Alice's Collection and see if we can find cute jeans and sweaters like Invie! I love sweaters for my dolls. Too bad the ones I knit for my 16" fashion dolls won't fit. And I don't want to try to redo all the fair isle patterns! I wonder if the ones for 17" guys will fit ok. Have to check the measurements for that. In the meantime I will try visiting Alice's Collection.

Sorry your computer isn't working properly, hope you get it going right, soon.

    18. Hi Goldie! No problem. I do commissions so I had to find a way to make sure the faceup stays on or I would have unhappy customers. The faceup was chipping while I was working so that was a really bad sign. 5stardoll resin has a slick finish to it which is not good for faceups straight from the factory. The same actually goes for Unoa faceplates. After the buffing with a magic eraser the finish should be more matte.

A tip for getting off a previous faceup is winsor newton brush cleaner or something similar. It also helps restore your brushes and keep them in good shape so I recommend it even if you don't do a lot of faceups but do paint a bunch. It will save you the time of buffing off a faceup since it basically works like soap on the paint/MSC.

The pastels I used on Ji are Unison. They are more pricey than I would recommend starting out with but since I am going to be doing a lot of faceups I decided to invest in them. I was using rembrandt pastels before which are only slightly cheaper (I had them from art school) and work well. To be honest if you aren't doing a lot of faceups and don't mind layering a lot I have also used a cheap student grade pastel from Loew-Cornell and the results actually aren't very far apart for the different grades. It is only when you are doing a bunch of faceups all the time that it starts to matter. The color vibrancy of a cheaper brand won't be as good as that from a higher end brand but doesn't make much of a difference with a natural faceup anyway. The finish from all three brands was nice. I didn't experience patchiness from any of them. The rembrandts and Unisons are soft enough that you just need to brush your brush over them to pick up color but I used sandpaper to get pastel dust from the Loew-Cornell pastels. (and I am also lusting after schmincke pastels since they are sooooo soft)

In terms of colors if you don't already have pastels, I recommend getting single sticks of the colors you will use because I so rarely use yellows and greens. To get Ji's lip color I layered and mixed a warm reddish brown with a peachy tan. To get a nice blush and to build up the eye and lip color it normally takes me at least 3-4 layers for a natural faceup. You can gauge if the lip color is too cool or to light between layers and adjust by dusting on a different color. What gives Ji's lip color more depth is also the red paint lines. If you want a pale lip you can use white paint lines instead like I did here on Yoka. For Yoka's lip color I was using the same peachy tan I used on Ji's lips but instead of mixing it with the reddish brown I used a pale pink and used lighter layers. So you can see the different effects you can get by lighter layers and just mixing one color with another.

    19. Wow! Invie, you are a very professional face up artist. What a difference between Ji and Yoka. And I certainly wouldn't have known about the lines making so much difference if you hadn't told me! Thank you so much! I can't post a picture yet, but if you are at all interested, I do have a flickr account under Goldie613 and Ji is there. And hopefully she is now here, too. So is my beautiful Goldie. Oh, and I am not the best photographer in the world, either (though I do sew well). I only planned on doing the 5 Star dolls face ups as 2 of the 3 heads were coming without face ups being the free parts. I do enjoy it and may try on another doll, but haven't decided yet. And your recommendation of getting single colors is a good idea as I haven't used yellow or green either. Or blue for that matter. But I just have a 12 color Farber Castell set. And the unison are definitely too expensive for my amateur efforts. But I enjoyed it and the dolls have face ups so I'm happy. :)

Do you have a degree in Art? I did take a drawing class and have some supplies left from that, but not anything like Rembrandt pastels.

Thank you again for all the help and information and I am going to save everything so I can find it easy any time I want it!

Have a wonderful day and take care
